Dear Parishioners, On August 22nd the United Nations commemorated the first ever International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion and Belief. Persecution of religious minorities is on the rise in our world today. Did you know that in 2018, over 4,300 Christians were killed for their religious beliefs. Open Doors, an organization that tracks the persecution of Christians around the world went on to say that their data reveals a 13.9% increase in the number of Christians experiencing high levels of persecution from the previous year. That translates into 30 million more people. Christians are not the only ones under attack. Jews, Muslims, and other religious groups have seen a rise in killing and violence. Some hate groups have even attacked people in their places of worship killing them while they are at prayer. What causes this violence may not be a single issue, but a growing nationalism or ultra-nationalism is often part of its justification. For example, India is the world’s largest democracy and at one time, taught our world a way of non-violence. However, violent attacks on non-Hindu groups by ultra-nationalists, has earned it a place on the Top Ten Worldwide Watch list. Other nations on that list include North Korea, Afghanistan, Somalia, Libya, and Pakistan. Dedicating a day to a cause will not make the problem go away, but if we are to address the problem, it is indeed a first step. All major religions proclaim tolerance and peaceful coexistence. We must resist those groups and individuals (both inside and outside the religion) who maliciously invoke religion to build misconceptions, divisions, and fear. Those who can teach you to fear others can teach you to hate them as well. UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres said we must do all in our power to prevent such attacks and to demand those responsible be held accountable. Uniting our voices for the good of all, we must counter the messages of hate with words of peace. He urged that as members of the human family we look out for one another, respect differences, and promote peaceful coexistence. My prayer is that the day will come when “the calf and the young lion shall browse together with a little child to guide them.” (Isaiah 11:6) Until then, there is much work to do. Don’t forget this Monday is Labor Day. It is not just “a day off”, but rather a day to remember the dignity that work gives to every human being and the need that the worker be fairly treated and justly compensated for what they do. 09/01/2019

SCHOOL NEWS! Monday, Sept. 2-NO SCHOOL Labor Day Friday, Sept 6-We will NOT have the dedication of the St. Teresa statue today or this weekend

50th ANNUAL AUCTION - Save the date to attend the 50th, yes 50th, edition of the Blessed Sacrament Auction on Saturday, October 19. This year's Auction, themed Five Decades of Auction Hits, will be chaired by Julia Langfelder Frevert. There will many updates in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, as we celebrate the half-century birthday of this event, we are collecting photographs and memories from past year auctions. Please share by dropping pictures or notes off at the school or the rectory office in an envelope addressed to Kim Hoffmann. The pictures will be returned to you. Please make plans to join us for this parish celebration on October 19.

Volunteers Make the Annual Auction AWESOME The 50th Annual Blessed Sacrament Auction is the biggest fundraiser of the year, and we need your help to make it AMAZING! There is no experience necessary. Earn service hours and have FUN by signing up today at http://signup.com/go/BSSauction or contact Megan DeFrain at (217) 971-8726.

Share the Word begins September 8 and is for children in grades 1-4 attending Mass at Blessed Sacrament, regardless of where they attend grade school. Children help with the first two readings and the responsorial psalm and the teacher reads the Gospel to them. They also say the Apostles Creed and share the intentions for the prayer of the faithful.. We can always use more volunteers. This is a rewarding way to become more involved in the parish and earn service hours. Contact the Parish Office (528-7521) or John Katalinich 836-2767 or email [email protected]

Save the Date! Ministry Fair September 7 and 8 Have you always wanted to be a Eucharistic Minister? A lector? An usher? Or help serve meals with Breadline ... but you didn't know who to ask? Join us at the Ministry Fair after all weekend Masses September 7 and 8, 2019. Representatives from all ministries will be available to answer questions and point you in the right direction. For more information, contact Lisa Sarnowski at [email protected]

Women's Club All women of the parish are invited for Wine & Cheese Night from 6:30-8:00 PM on Tuesday, September 3rd in the school cafeteria/courtyard. Come socialize and find out about our plans for this coming year. Mark your calendar to attend our annual potluck on Tuesday, September 17th.

Pope John Paul II This epic film follows Karol Wojtyla’s journey from his youth in Poland through his late days on the Chair of St. Peter. It explores his life behind the scenes: how he touched millions of people, changed the face of the Church and the world, and how he defended the dignity of mankind. Jon Voight’s powerful, Emmy-nominated performance as John Paul II was widely praised, as was Cary Elwes as the young Karol. Shot on location in Rome and Poland in close connection with the Vatican, this is the definitive epic film on the life of Pope John Paul II. Stars Jon Voight, Cary Elwes, Ben Gazzara, James Cromwell, and Christopher Lee. This, and many other videos, audio talks, books, and live discussions are available at no charge to you via our parish subscription to Formed. If you aren’t already signed up for your free access to Formed go to www.bsps.formed.org. If you need assistance please call Bob Vincent at 523-4335.

The annual Women's Club Advent by Candlelight evening will be held on Sunday, December 8th. We need table decorators, bakers, greeters, and servers to make it a successful evening. Our special guest speaker is Marlene Mulford, a graduate of the Catholic Spiritual Mentorship Program. Please add December 8th to your calendar and consider volunteering. For more details, contact Sally Petrone at 217.341.9088. Text or call.
