At every Sunday Mass, Catholics confess that Jesus came down from heaven “for us men and for our salvation.” But what does “salvation” mean? In this remarkable 10-part video series, Scripture scholar and theologian Michael Patrick Barber provides a thorough, deeply Catholic, and deeply biblical, answer. Based on the best-selling book Salvation: What Every Catholic Should Know this video series is inspiring, engaging, and accessible. Dear Friends, A blessed Easter to you all. It is an odd Easter, wherein social distancing has changed how we work, go to school, shop and even social-ize. But it seems we now even have “distance worship”. For us Catholics, a Holy Week without going to church is odd indeed. Many of you have commented to me about the strangeness and even the pain of not worshipping together as a community. Indeed, the word “church” is related to the biblical Greek word ekklesia, which gives us ecclesial (churchy) and actually means “to be called forth” — that is, to form a community out of individuals who are responding to God’s universal call to holiness (as Vatican II phrased it) and thus by definition forming a community. So, “distance worship” is not the first option we would choose to express our discipleship. Yet, for the sake of the greater good, it is what we have. With the help of Fr Peter, and seminarians Brendon and Chin, we are able to livestream on Facebook daily Mass from our church, and I’m pretty amazed at the number who are watching. Typically in decent weather at daily Mass here we have 35-40 at 8 AM and 40-45 at 12 Noon Mass. This week the numbers who viewed our streamed services each day were quite large:

Palm Sunday (3 services): 2,219 Holy Thursday (1 service): 1,900 Good Friday (3 services): 2,614 Easter Vigil (1 service): 1,700 Easter Sunday (3 services): 1,854

Of course, those numbers include many non-parishioners, and many who were staying home so they had time to “tune in”. It encour-ages me to hope that this experience of “distance worship” may lead many to have a greater appreciation of the personal presence we offer the Real Presence of Christ when we attend Mass. For there is no greater experience of communion in our earthly life than to receive Holy Communion sacramentally. On the other hand, I also realize that it may be possible that some will actually lose the habit of coming to Church because of this “religious furlough”. Pray that will not be the case. All you receiving this letter know that joining together physically in any effort brings a special energy to our works, and that is especially true of worship. Many of you have remarked to me that part of being in church is the financial support you provide our good works. Not assembling for worship also means no collection. Many have mailed or dropped to the rectory your weekly offering, or have continued them seamlessly via electronic giving. I also know many of you will “catch up” when church resumes. I thank you and urge all of you to do your best in these horrific economic times for everyone. I can only ask you, to the best of your ability please support our parish. Either mail in or drop off your offering in the rectory mail slot, or enroll in electronic giving. It’s easy” go to faithdirect.net and enter our parish code - NY370 or “Text-To-Give” at 929-254-3850 which will take you directly to our page. Thank you for your help. Finally, please remember that free copies of the Tablet, Nuestra Voz and 5 Minutes with the Word are available to pick up in display boxes attached to the fence in front of the rectory. Msgr. Sean G. Ogle

Mons. Sean. G. Ogle
