QUESTION EVERYTHING.

Our inclination to question our Catholic faith is not a bad thing - it can be beneficial, as it leads us to

seeking truth. That's why in this 4th term of Life Teen, we're breaking the mould & simply answering

our most commonly asked questions. Join us on Sunday Evenings from 6:30-8pm!

Tonight’s Night: “WHO WANTS TO BE A CATHOLIC”

Next Week’s Night: “QUESTION EVERYTHING, PART 2”

Thirty-Second Sunday of the Year Year C 10th November 2019 Fearghus óFearghaill

Commentary

First Reading (2 Macc 7: 1-2, 9-14) The tone is set for the story of the martyrdom of the seven Maccabean brothers and their mother as one of the brothers avers his willingness to die ‘rather than transgress the laws of our ancestors’. The story which is meant to edify the reader or listener is set in the context of the oppressive regime of Antiochus Epiphanes or Antiochus IV. This successor of Alexander the Great in this part of the Hellenistic world was seeking to spread the ‘gospel’ of Hellenisation by force but his efforts to persuade the Jews to abandon their faith and their religious customs were doomed to failure. The story tells how one by one each brother refused to deny his faith and suffered martyrdom. For each of them death is preferable to breaking God’s law. Their patient endurance comes from their faith in the resurrection.

Second Reading (2 Thess 2: 16 - 3: 5) Some Christians of Thessalonica were upset because members of their community had died without seeing the Lord. Paul had already written to the Thessalonians offering them words of comfort and encouragement. This second letter to the same community was occasioned by negative reports emerging from Thessalonica about the conduct of some members of the Christian community there (cf. 3:11) and about their mistaken ideas concerning the coming of Christ (cf.2:2). In today’s extract we hear the writer praying that the word of God ‘may speed on and triumph’ as it had already done amongst them, and they are reminded that the Lord who is faithful will strengthen them and watch over them. The writer is confident that they are doing well and prays that the Lord may direct their hearts ‘to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ’.

Gospel (Lk 20: 27-38) The Sadduccees who belong to the upper echelons of Jewish society controlled the temple in the time of Jesus, and, unlike the Pharisees, did not believe in the resurrection (cf. Acts 23:8). They came to Jesus, addressed him as teacher, and posed a theoretical problem for him, as they may have done to others, quoting the Mosaic law, seeking to catch him out. The regulation to which they refer is that concerning levirate marriage or the custom whereby a brother-in-law begets children for his dead brother by marring his widow (cf. Deut 25; 5;38:8). It was a custom widespread in the Ancient Near East. The Sadduccees would expect Jesus to give an answer in line with their own beliefs, or with the beliefs of the Pharisees who believed in the resurrection. To the question of the Sadduccees Jesus’ answer is to say that marriage belongs to this age in which men and women die, but not to the age to come when people no longer die. Earthly institutions do not continue in the age to come. To answer the question posed by the Sadduccees Jesus has recourse to the Old Testament and the story of Moses, in particular the story of Yahweh’s appearance to him in the burning bush (Ex 3:2), when he identified himself as the God of the patriarchs. For Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, Yahweh is still their God, implying that Yahweh is a God of the living. His exegesis meets with the approval of the scribes (cf.20:39).
