We open with the Penitential Rite and the reading of the Decalogue or a Summary of the Law. We are experimenting with singing the psalm together, so that we pray as a body through the rhythmic breathing of Anglican chant. We have changed the Eucharistic Prayer and the Prayer of Thanksgiving so that we reconsider the words we are saying. During the season of Lent, we will make a special effort to keep silence before the service and after the service as a way of sanctifying the space for worship, self-examination, and self-reflection. To respect those seeking that quiet before and after services, please take conversations out of the sanctuary as we strive to balance the different mood of Lent with the joy of our corporate worship. May this Lenten season be holy and nourishing!

FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT

MARCH 5, 2017

A Note from the Worship Council

Sundays, always a day of resurrection, are a time to celebrate with joy and boisterous connection and conversation. Even during the more somber and penitential season of Lent, Sundays remain a “time outside of time” and are not counted in the 40 days. Nevertheless, you will notice changes that set the season apart with more starkness, sobriety, and silence. We will begin services with a silent procession punctuated by the chiming of bells.

LANDSCAPE FORUM TODAYJoin us after both services for a Forum to introduce LOOKING BEYOND OURSELVES: Final Phase First Impression. It’s finally time to look beyond the walls of our beautiful historic building to our grounds on the corner of State and Micheltorena. Together we will create a lovely, water-wise garden to be enjoyed by parishioners and the surrounding community for many years to come. This project will conclude Trinity’s Capital Campaign which called for sustainable landscaping and improved accessibility. Please join us to see the landscape plans, review the budget, and learn about fundraising opportunities. Some work will begin in March and we hope to see signs of a budding garden by spring.

SUSTAINABLE TRINITY WANTS YOU!If you are interested in good stewardship of God’s creation, our planet Earth, the Sustainable Trinity Committee welcomes your help and inspiration. We are planning a Sunday service and forums this spring in conjunction with Earth Day. Come and learn ways to support sustainability right here in our parish and in our homes and actions you can take to address current environmental issues and legislation. Please join us at our next meeting on Monday, March 6 at 5pm in the Trinity library. Sign up sheets are on the Welcome Table. For more information contact Jean Davis, [email protected].

CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER Wednesday, March 8, 7-8pm“Is not this the fast that I choose:to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and to bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin?” (Isaiah 58:6-7) All are welcome. Judy Stevens will facilitate the session.

SCIENCE AND RELIGION MONDAY, MARCH 6, 7-8:30pmThe Science and Religion Study Group is pleased to welcome Dr. Ken Kihlstrom, physics professor at Westmont College. Dr. Kihlstrom’s talk is titled, “The Universe Through The Eyes of Science.” Over thousands of years the human race has looked to the heavens and tried to understand what was there. The Church has sometimes been a support and sometimes a hindrance to our knowledge. We’ll look at the development of models of the solar system and the universe. We’ll also see amazing pictures provided both by Westmont’s Keck Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope. For further information, contact Bob Richard, 805-680-5590 or [email protected] An offering will be received.

TODAY’S PREACHERWe welcome Jack Jezreel, founder of JustFaith Ministries. A dynamic, nationally-known speaker and advocate of social justice ministry, Jack led our Lenten series kickoff yesterday.

THE REV. MICHAEL CORRIGAN TO JOIN AS PASTORAL ASSOCIATE Michael Corrigan will be joining the staff of Trinity as the Pastoral Associate. Raised up for ordination by this parish, Michael has served as Chaplain at Cottage Hospital and as an assisting priest at Trinity and neighboring parishes. Joining the staff part-time, he will have a special focus on pastoral care, visiting, and teaching. After filling in as Priest in Charge during the upcoming season of Lent at St. Mark’s, Los Olivos, he will fold into the liturgical rota at Trinity. We are so grateful for the many skills he brings to the team and for his strong and gentle pastoral presence.

Trinity Reads: Our recommended companion book for Lent and beyond is Progressive Faith and Practice: Thou Shalt Not Stand Idly By, by Roger L. Ray. This book articulates a progressive faith that combines the academic work of the modern biblical critical movement and the historical Jesus work of the Jesus Seminar applied within the life of an active parish. Ray strives to apply Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel’s injunction (“Thou shalt not stand idly by”) to actively respond to the injustice, violence and discrimination in the world. Available for purchase at the Welcome Table.

Baptism, a principle sacrament of the church, is a joyous public service of initiation. The gathered community takes vows to support the newly baptized, celebrates with and welcomes them. At Trinity we baptize people of any age within regular worship services. Here is the schedule of baptismal service for 2017:• Saturday, April 15, at the Easter Vigil

service• Sunday, July 16, midsummer, 8 and

RON GODARWe were sad to receive the news that Ron Godar died over the weekend. A faithful member of the 8am Sunday congregation, Ron brought a solid calm to worship at Trinity. We mourn with family and friends while we hope in the resurrection. We do not anticipate a service at Trinity and will keep him and loved ones in prayer. May light perpetual shine upon him.

BAPTISMS LAST SUNDAYWe welcomed 3 new people into the body of Christ through Baptism at Trinity last Sunday. Please congratulate the candidates, their families and sponsors:Kate McDonald, sponsored by Teresa Pietsch Noah Davis, sponsored by Ava Cooper Davis and Jeffrey DavisEaston Smith, sponsored by Alissa Smith and Zac Bunker

“Heavenly God, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon us the forgiveness of sin and have raised us to a new life of grace. Sustain us, oh Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give us an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder and all your works.”

about pledging

Our vision of Stewardship recognizes that God is the giver and has blessed each one of us with many gifts. Common to us all is the privilege and blessing of how we use the precious gifts of our time, talent and treasure. Stewardship is the spiritual practice of discerning the use of these gifts in building God’s dream of love and justice in our hearts, relationships and world. At Trinity we call your gift of time and talent Shared Ministry and we call your gift of treasure a pledge. Pledge forms are available at the Welcome Table.
