STONE, BISHOPSTONE AND HARTWELL PARISH COUNCIL ANNUAL MEETINGS AT STONE, 1914 and 2014

On Tuesday May 8th 2014 the Stone, Bishopstone and Hartwell Parish Council held their Annual Meeting in the new pavilion, when officers were elected for the year 2014-15 and George Lamb resigned as Chairman after two decades of dedicated service to the village. Discussion ranged from improvements in the villages to illegal parking and mitigation of the effects of HS2. Just over 100 years ago, on Tuesday April 21st 1914, the Parish Council met – probably in the Committee Room at their new Village Hall – to elect officers and Chairman for 1914-15 and suggest improvements which might be made in the village. Since the Hall had been built by public subscription there was no mention of financial difficulties – today the Council is recovering from the huge cost of our new pavilion, which replaced the wooden building provided, by public subscription, for the new War Memorial Recreation Ground in the early 1920s. War seemed a long way away in April 1914, yet in just over 3 months the world had changed. The Bucks Herald reported the meeting: Members present were John Sare, A.J.Flower, W.White, F.G.Woodford, J.Woodford, G.Turnham, J.Plested and J.Warren together with the clerk, W.F.Beechey. John Sare, of Calley Farm, was unanimously reappointed Chairman and Mr W.J.Bates was re-elected vice chairman – Messrs E.W.Clarke and J.Beechey were appointed overseers, and Messrs F.G.Woodford and W.J.Bates elected on the Footpaths Committee for Stone, and Messrs John Sare and James Plested for Bishopstone. The Clerk was instructed to write to the County Surveyor with reference to danger signals being placed on both sides of Stone turn, it being considered a very dangerous spot; also to express the hope that the roads might be tarred as soon as possible owing to the dust nuisance, and to ascertain whether there was a speed limit thorough the village for motor cars and motor cycles, which was considered necessary. Nothing changes!

OBITUARY JAMES ERIC SMALL

James Small died on April 5

th 2014, aged 83, and was cremated at Porchester

Crematorium on April 14th. James was the son of Hubert and Kate Small and he

and his sister Ruby were born in a cottage opposite the Waggon and Horses in the centre of Stone. His father Hubert was an electrician at St John’s. James trained there and at Stoke Mandeville as a psychiatric nurse and worked at St John’s until in 1968 he moved to Southampton, with his wife Erwin and children Sally Ann and Martin. He became a Principal Nursing Officer in the psychiatric unit of Southampton General Hospital. There were many members of at least two Small families in the village in the 1911 census, but now only James’ cousin Jean McClane (nee Small), born in Sedrup, still lives here, at 3 Oxford Road. His parents Hubert and Kate Small retired to a bungalow in Portway Road and both are buried in Hartwell Graveyard

Flush Fund Sponsored Bike Ride The Bike Ride took place on Saturday May 10

th on a lovely sunny day, but with a

strong headwind. The adult cyclist completed a 10 mile circuit starting at the Dinton Village Hall via Ford, Marsh, Bishopstone and Stone while the children’s route was from the village hall to Westlington, up to the church and back to the hall a circuit of 2 miles. Fifteen cyclists completed the adult circuit and five the children’s one.

The undoubted star of the adults was Henry from Henley who completed the circuit on his original Victorian Penny Farthing but all the other entrants did very well completing the circuit in good time. The Marshalls were all in the right place and highly visible and the refreshments afterwards were delicious.

Thanks to your generous donations the Flush Fund Project will enter a new phase in 2015 when we will start the building works on the toilets and kitchen.

The total raised for the event will be reported in the July magazine when all the sponsorship money has been collected.

A big thankyou to everyone who took part.

Dear Friends,

BREAD AND WINE, + DOUGHNUTS AND HOT CHOCOLATE!

If you were fortunate enough to be at our All Age Communion Service on 4th May,

you will have been surprised to be served with doughnuts and hot chocolate before the end of the Service. Whilst enjoying these, in place of our sermon, the Learning Communities’ Group gave a slick powerpoint presentation about their first two days spent with other similar groups in the Deanery, and what we seek to achieve as a Church in the future.

Deanery Learning Communities are currently being tested in three other Dioceses to assist multi-Parish Benefices. Our team felt this to be a timely exercise because we will become one of these when we join with Haddenham. So what are we planning to do? As was shared on 4

th May, we have only just begun a process which we want

everyone to be involved in and kept informed about. We want to build on what we do well e.g. friendliness and sense of community, and strong links with Church Schools. We also need to work on blockages to growth, e.g. maintaining ancient buildings lacking in facilities, and work on having a united vision about the future.

Our initial vision statement, which we will seek to develop in the future, is this:

“TO BELONG, BELIEVE AND BUILD WITH CHRIST AS OUR CORNERSTONE.”

If you missed the presentation, do ask any of the team * and we will give a précis of it, and please pray with us that BEFORE we link up with the larger Benefice,

God gives us a clear vision of where He is leading us for the future.

Yours in His service, PETER RICH (Rev) Priest in Charge

June Gardening Finish the planting of all extra-tender plants at the beginning of the month. Pay careful attention to the staking of all plants as they grow, this could be even more important this year as so far (at least to the end of April) the weather conditions have been so kind to gardeners that plants do seem to be growing very strongly, keep our fingers crossed that plants growing well, continues through the summer. Prune shrubs after flowering as necessary. Pick off all dead or dying flowers to extend the grow season. If your roses suffer from black spot, it may help to mulch the rose-beds with grass mowings. This stops the spores which infect the leaves spreading up from the soil. It is also the season to start hedge clipping. Continue making successional sowings of lettuce, peas, radish, beet, carrots. Plant out tomatoes and ridge cucumbers. Very importantly use the hoe often, which keeps the weeds down and the dust mulch which hoeing creates keeps moisture in the soil and also lets rain penetrate more easily. Remove side-shoots from tomatoes. Runner beans can still be planted for a late crop. Houseplants would benefit from standing outside if we get a few nice warm showers, but don’t forget to bring then in again. They would also like more humidity indoors. This can be achieved by standing the pot in a tray or saucer of moist shingles. Above all else, keep a very careful watch for all the many varied aphids that exist and all the other pests and be prepared to fight back. PS

Aunt Em and her Salad Days part two What happened to part one you asked? Well the editor reminded me I did write a few words last year about that old favourite – the salad and he thought a few new ideas from me were due. Salad of course is a good standby for main courses, snacks and picnics. Max is changing a plug so that gives me a chance to catch up. Max is so bad at DIY he could get electrocuted changing a bath plug. Salads used to be standard cabbage lettuce, a few tomatoes, grated carrot, and beetroot. Now you can get all sorts of lettuce, and other more exotic greens. Personally I steer clear of iceberg lettuce as it tastes of cold water and go for the nutty flavour of the smaller varieties. Never eat red leaves. Leaves are meant to be green. Max tends to go for quantity rather than looks and longevity rather than freshness. He always gives me a funny look when he says that. Try mixing a few unusual foods for variety and colour. Try blue cheese, walnuts and pears or water melon and feta cheese. A friend of ours brought back something exotic from a Mediterranean holiday and after that was cured she told about a salad made of peeled cucumber, feta (again), olives and finely sliced red onion. Keep in touch and happy eating! Em

World Challenge in Malaysia and Borneo Sophie Almond, of New Road, Dinton, went to Malaysia and Borneo ion a World Challenge last year and had an amazing time, experiencing a different culture and pushing herself to her limits. Here are some of her experiences:

Malaysia “We spent the first week in Malaysia, flying into Kuala Lumpur via Qatar. KL was full of interesting sights and smells and we visited the open air bird aviary there. We also went up the KL tower for afternoon tea and enjoyed the amazing views. We spent two days with children and adults at the Kirtash Handicap Centre. It was challenging, but also rewarding working with those less fortunate than ourselves.

We did two day treks in the Cameron Highlands, and the steep and dangerous terrain meant progress was slow! We managed to walk two miles in the wrong direction on one day – needless to say morale was low!” Borneo “We travelled on a small 12 seater plane from Miri to Bario in Borneo. The plane felt like it was going to fall apart and we had to be weighed along with our lbags! The views were amazing though. We were supposed to spend 4 nights in the Borneo rainforest. Our leader, Mark, got bitten by a snake on the second day and had to be rushed to hospital – he spent 9 days there.” Sophie is now settled at university after her adventure, and wants to thank everyone who helped her in her achievement.
