CHURCH OF THE HOLY FAMILY VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NEWSCouncil 10804

REPORT ON KIDS FISHING DAYOur Council’s 32nd Annual Kids Fishing Day, which took place on August 1 on the OceanView Park Fishing Pier, was a huge success. We had one of the largest turnouts of children and volunteers we have ever had. This could only happen with a well planned and executed program and the help of many volunteers. In the weeks prior to the event, 15 educational programs on “Sea Monsters” were presented (including how to use a spin fishing pole) to 538 children between the ages of 6-18 at 10 Boys and Girls Clubs of Southeast Virginia (BGCSEVA).

For the actual Kids Fishing Day, we had 173 kids, 20 BGCSEVA chaperones and 154 adult volunteers for a grand total of 347 participants. There was a total of 220 fish, 44 crabs, and 1 clam(?) caught during the day; most of them catch and release; including the clam!!

Knights from several other Councils in our area participated along with 27 Knights from our Council, 5 of their family members, and 11 Church of the Holy Family parishioners for a total of 43 parishioners from Church of the Holy Family!! Thank you to all of our volunteers!!

Once again, PGK Greg Brown and PGK Charlie Clarkson, with the help of many wonderful volunteers, have demonstrated what great things can be accomplished when we work together. As usual, well done Greg and Charlie!! So, if you want to have some fun and help the kids in our area, save the date of Thursday, August 1, 2019 for next year’s event!!

WEEKLY WISDOM

FORMED has something for EveryoneHuman Sexuality

This YDisciple series tackles the subject for youth in a candid and unflinching way to give understanding and perspective in light of their faith and as an alternative to what current culture promotes regarding this topic. It is recommended that parent and youth watch this together (or parent previews prior to discussing with their teen).

Testimony from AFF Team Member:

“While exploring the Formed website, I found fascinating discussions on Human Sexuality which covered many of the pressing issues we face today with all the opinions of sexual relationships we are experiencing and experimenting within our society. A profound observation in one of the episodes was in first identifying who we are as a person before we define our inclinations towards our sexual orientation and actions. Setting this as a priority helps to understand our inner purpose as God’s children, no matter what race, creed, or sexual orientation we have. God makes all for God’s glory, and fitted within the framework of God’s shared love for us to be co-creators of the physical world we can be more fully participants in the Kingdom of God’s Love for eternity.”

NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 12, 2018

CHURCH BUILDING SECURITY:As we approach the start of the school year, we are working to

increase the overall security of our building. This will involve removal of some vegetation that can be used as a hiding place, installing building cameras, rekeying door locks, and installing interior doors in the school hallways. This work is in keeping with recommendations from a security audit in conjunction with the Diocese and Virginia Beach Police.

The fi rst phase of work will be to remove bushes adjacent to the building and replace with grass or low growing fl oral beds. We will also be clearing out bushes around the parking areas, some of which are hopelessly interlaced with poison ivy.

The second phase will involve rekeying exterior doors and installing cameras at our entrances. Interior doors will not be rekeyed until a later date, so you will still need to retain your keys. Some of the rekeyed exterior doors will have electric lock systems that will require a key card for entry after hours or on weekends when services are not scheduled. The doors will be automatically unlocked as required for weekday and weekend schedules.

The third phase will involve installing interior doors on the school halls that will require card access during school hours. More on all of this will come as we begin work in the next few weeks.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD:Do you enjoy working with children? Can you give of your

time during Mass? Would you like to share the Word of God with the youngest members of our parish? Can you give 20 minutes of your time on a Sunday to the children of our parish? Then CLOW is the ministry for YOU!

The K-5 Catechist Team is Looking for YOU!!Do you enjoy working with children? Would you like to teach the richness of the Catholic faith to the children of our parish? Can you give of your time on Sunday mornings? Are you looking for a way to become more involved in the parish and also learn more about your Catholic faith? Then the K-5 Catechist Team is the ministry for YOU! We are currently looking to add 5 members to this incredible team in order for CF classes to begin on time in September.

The Three Benefi ts of Being a Catechist:Testimony from a K-5 Catechist: “In order to teach, I am forced to learn what I am teaching, so I learn more than I knew. I learn even more than that as a result of the wise yet innocent questions posed by the students. It is amazing how well they share what they know, and that they are willing to admit when they don’t know something, so they ask pointed and insightful questions, so I learn even more.”

Check back next week to learn the next benefi t – and please consider joining the K-5 Team!

Please prayerfully consider sharing your gifts and your love of the Catholic faith with the elementary youth of our parish. The curriculum is easy to follow and supplies are provided. Christian Formation classes meet on Sunday mornings, between the Masses (9:30 a.m.-10:45 a.m.). We follow the Virginia Beach Public Schools calendar and our schedule runs from September-May.

A background check and VIRTUS training is required. Contact Tiffany in the Parish Offi ce or [email protected] if interested.

“CREATION CARE CORNER:”

SAY “YES” TO WIND POWER

Two Virginia offshore wind town hall meetings were held in Virginia Beach and Hampton: July 23 and 30, 2018. For those who attended an exciting opportunity was presented.

Offshore wind can provide clean energy at the scale we need to help curb the climate crisis. The wind resource off the Atlantic Coast is capable of generating at least 2,000 megawatts of power - enough electricity to power 500,000 homes. Developing this clean energy resource would allow Virginia and the U.S. to quickly meet carbon reduction goals while creating thousands of new jobs and business opportunities. The proposed wind farm would be located 25 miles offshore to mitigate any migratory bird, shipping lanes, or tourism issues.

That is why one of the Virginia Chapter Sierra Club’s priority goals is to support the prompt development of Virginia’s vast offshore wind resources so as to boost our economy, create good, green jobs and power our homes and businesses with clean renewable energy.

To that end, we have developed this site – VA4Wind.com – as an online hub for educating and engaging all stakeholders in Virginia’s offshore wind development. Visit this site to see what you can do to push it forward.

Together we’ll build the massive public support necessary to prompt Federal and State government offi cials and regulators to move as aggressively as possible in developing Virginia’s offshore wind resources. Together we’ll build the business support that prompts investment in developing Virginia’s offshore wind industry. Together we’ll build a clean energy future that sustains our communities and confronts the crisis we face with climate change.

LET’S GET THIS THING BLOWING!
