EASTER LILIES

There is a tradition at St Michael's that people who wish to commemorate their loved ones who have departed this life, present lilies which form the basis for the floral decoration of the church at Easter. A list and envelopes will be placed at the back of the church. Please write your name and the names of those to be remembered on the list and donate £2 per lily (cash or cheque to be made out to the Withyham Church Flower Fund). Please write your name on the envelope and give it to Jill Pardey. The other thing I would like to flag up for the future is a Bring and Buy Coffee Morning to be held on Tuesday April 28th at Smugglers, Hoadleys Lane, Crowborough, to raise money for the flowers for the flower festival.

Many thanks, Jill Pardey

Groombridge Horticultural Society Our next event will be on Thursday 19th March at 8pm in the Groombridge Village Hall (New Hall), when we welcome Jacqueline Aviolet to talk to us about hardy geraniums. Jacqueline, who is a lively and experienced speaker and owner of Rosie’s Garden Plants in Aylesford, will share with us her knowledge of these highly useful garden favourites and will also be bringing along plants to sell. Free entry for members and tea, coffee and biscuits provided. It’s also time to start preparing for the Spring Show on Saturday 4th April at 2.30pm in the Groombridge Village Hall (Main Hall). Hopefully the storms and constant rain will have left most of our gardens intact and though there may not be many daffodils left by then, there are lots of other flower, fruit and vegetable classes plus floral art, cookery and handicrafts so please do come along and enter. The full schedule of classes is on our website. Entries to be submitted by 8pm on Thursday 2nd April if possible please. As always, everyone is very welcome to come along and view the show; entrance is free and there will be delicious teas and cakes available. Staging of entries: 9 am to 12 noon Judging: 12.15 to 1.30 pm Open for viewing: 2.30pm Prize Giving: 4pm

Will, an Iraq War veteran suffering from PTSD, lives with his 13 year old daughter Tom in a vast public park in Portland, Oregon. They venture into town rarely to buy essential supplies, using money from selling Will’s prescribed medicines. A tiny mistake leads to their capture, and outdoor

freedom turns to indoor confinement, forced to conform to society. It strains their relationship to breaking point. Written / directed by Debra Granik.

Doors open at 18.30 - Film starts at 19.30 Members - £2 (£1 child). Non-members - £6 (£3)

Come early to socialise and enjoy our licensed bar, serving wine, prosecco, craft beers, soft drinks, tea / coffee and nibbles.

Here at Blackham Country Players we are well known for our funny plays but in April this year we are performing what we believe will be one our funniest. “Happy Campers” is the story of a family who meet on a hillside in the Yorkshire Dales to say a fond farewell to Frank who has an unusual past and a little family secret. The actors (and our lovely stage) have to cope with two tents, rucksacks, numerous bits of camping gear, chairs an umbrella and a dry-stone wall and of course Frank who strangely doesn’t say much during the whole performance! The Director, Richard Lake says, “I have wanted to put this show on at Blackham Village Hall for about 5 years now but the timing has never been right; now however, with a great cast, great props and Spring nearly upon us it’s going to be a great show”. Get your tickets now for what will be a great evening of entertainment with the usual Blackham warm welcome..….and remember, the laughter is in-tents! NOTES FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL

Withyham Parish Council (WPC) met on Monday 10TH February 2020 at The Old Station, Groombridge. Action from these meetings is on our website www.withyhamparishcouncil.org.uk and Facebook on www.facebook.com/WithyhamParishCouncil. Minutes can also be obtained from the Clerks at the Old Station, Groombridge. Members of the public are encouraged to come to the meetings and there is a 10-minute opportunity at the start of every meeting for them to address the Council: We were delighted that a resident who is interested in becoming a councillor joined us at the meeting to find out more about WPC and the role. We currently have 3 vacancies across the parish so we would love to see other interested people as well! REPORT FROM COUNTY AND DISTRICT COUNCILLORS: County Councillor Whetstone is also a Conservator of Ashdown Forest and he regrets ESCC’s decision to withdraw its funding of the Ashdown Forest. The Conservators have a fundraising plan in place. District Councillors Hardy and Obbard expect Wealden District Council (WDC) to withdraw its Local Plan following the Planning Inspector’s comments. WDC will revert to the old Local Plan while work commences on a new one. WARD REPORTS: GROOMBRIDGE WARD – Footpath 33 from Groombridge Recreation Ground to Groombridge Place remains extremely flooded. The Rights of Way Committee had considered this and, if necessary, will serve a Section 56 Notice under the Highways Act due to the surface being out of repair. The Parish Council helped coordinate a response by WDC to occupation of land at Park Corner. WDC Enforcement are now investigating and WPC will be kept updated. WITHYHAM/BLACKHAM -: Having considered a replacement bus stop at Blackham, the Parish Council feels it is important to find out from residents what their priorities are. The old bus stop will therefore be removed due to safety concerns and a consultation will take place soon. We were excited to hear about residents meeting to see how they can make Withyham/Balls Green ‘greener’. MARDEN’S HILL WARD - Cllr Tarling is meeting with St John’s Preschool to discuss installing a footpath to improve safety for Reading Room users. WPC WEBSITE: Councillors enjoyed a preview of the new more accessible and user-friendly website, including a page of parish events and activities. It will be launched in the new financial year… watch this space. HIGHWAYS COORDINATOR REPORT: Councillors were impressed by, and grateful for, the extent of work undertaken by our volunteer Highways Coordinator. There have been successes but there is still much to do to improve highways across the parish. WEALDLINK – This invaluable service is provided as a door to door shopping service which is important for those who cannot drive, as well as being available for community groups to hire. STREETLIGHTS: The light at the Newton Willows steps requires a new lantern. Council agreed that it would be a more suitable place for the ornamental lantern on Corseley Road, which has a wider coverage and has been reported to shine into the adjacent homes. A standard LED will therefore go at Corseley Road and the lantern will be moved.

Next Parish Council Meeting: Monday 9th March 2020 at 7.30pm. All are welcome

THE ARTS SOCIETY ASHDOWN FOREST 12th March 2020 at 2pm

Crowborough Community Centre, Pine Grove, TN6 1FE Angela Findlay: The Role of The Arts in the Cycle of Crime, Prison and

Re-offending Years of working as an artist within the Criminal Justice System in England and Germany have given Angela Findlay unique insights into the destructive and costly cycle of crime, prisons and re-offending. In this thought-provoking talk she offers a deeper understanding of the minds, lives and challenges of offenders. With extraordinary slides of art projects and prisoners’ art, she demonstrates how within the process of creating art of any discipline, there are vital opportunities for offenders to confront their crimes and develop the key life skills so essential in leading a positive and productive life. Arts Society members free - visitors £6. Refreshments follow the lecture.

Groombridge and Hartfield Surgery Patients Participation Group Following on from the successful walking programme at Groombridge we would like to offer a similar programme in Hartfield. If you are interested in taking part or would like to volunteer as a guide, please contact Geraldine Ormonde on 01892 770757 for more details. We are always looking at ways to improve patient feedback to the Practice, so during two weeks in April we will be asking patients attending either of the surgeries to complete a short questionnaire. Your input to this will be appreciated. There are two pharmacists supporting The Groombridge and Hartfield Surgery. Ross works on a Tuesday and Sarah on a Thursday and Friday. This is a developing role ultimately helping the doctors conduct thorough reviews of patients' medications and ensuring transfer of care between settings is safe and efficient (for example, when a person comes home from hospital). So, overall the role involves phoning patients to review their medicines, answering any medicine-related queries which may come from the patient or a doctor, phoning following discharge from hospital and conversations regarding healthy lifestyle and over the counter remedies. We appreciate sometimes these phone calls may be unexpected but they would be pleased to contact you at a pre-arranged time if it's more convenient. This is an exciting time for the NHS and the surgery; if you have any feedback they would be interested to hear from you. You can contact Sarah and Ross via the surgery on 863326. Our AGM will be held in the Village Hall, Hartfield, on Saturday 18th April at 10.00. We have invited our MP, Nus Ghani; however, because of other commitments on that day it is not certain at this stage if she will be able to attend. We will update you nearer the date.

Claire Nash Solicitors

When it comes to getting legal advice, it’s always di!cult to know where to go, particularly when it’s required for matters of a more sensitive nature. Local solicitor, Claire Nash, understands the

stress that going through any legal matter can cause, which is why she will do what she can to make the process as stress free as possible for her clients - whether it’s making a will, obtaining equity release, marital a"airs or administrating a loved one’s estate. Claire also understands the importance of being #exible to meet her clients and o"ers an out of hours, home visit service if required, be it during o!ce hours, evenings or at weekends.

Wills It is estimated that over 60% of the adult population in the UK do not have a will. It is not as complicated as people may think - a simple Will can be surprisingly inexpensive, even when drafted by a quali$ed solicitor. To not have a Will in place could mean your assets may not go to your chosen bene$ciaries.

Matrimonial Matters If you are considering divorce or separation, or if you’ve received a divorce petition from your spouse or civil partner, please come and talk to us. Claire o"ers a free initial consultation where you are able to discuss the process and issues which concern you most. You’ll be able to ascertain whether any further professional input is necessary and this initial consultation is o"ered on a no obligation basis. You’ve got nothing to lose by speaking to Claire $rst.

Equity Release Part of e"ective inheritance tax planning can sometimes involve obtaining an equity release mortgage on your property. This would allow you to remain in your home whilst you enjoy a lump sum payment, perhaps for home improvements, a luxury purchase or as a gift to

a loved one for a deposit on a home for example. You should always seek advice from a quali$ed independent $nancial advisor to take you through your options before engaging the services of an equity release solicitor.

Lasting Power of Attorney A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that allows you to appoint a person(s) to make decisions about matters concerning you if you ever become unable to make those decisions yourself. It gives you the chance to appoint those you know and trust to make decisions that are in your best interests when you are at your most vulnerable.

Probate Probate may be required when a loved one passes away. Essentially it means the accessing and distribution of the person’s estate according to their Will (if they left one) or according to the law of intestacy (if they did not leave a Will). You will not need to pay money up front on a probate matter - fees and disbursements are paid from the estate monies when they become available. If you $nd yourself in need of legal advice in any of the above matters, remember Claire Nash Solicitors aim to provide you with the highest professional service and advice, whilst always being approachable, personal, caring and committed to helping you achieve your desired outcomes, and they’re local.
