DearFriendsDearFriendsI'mwritingthisinmidJune,we'rebeginningtoopenupourchurchesforprivateprayerand funerals. We're looking towardsa timewhen itwillbepossible togather for weekly worship, to celebrate weddings and to welcome individualsandfamiliesforbaptisms. AsIwriteIdon'tyetknowwhenanyofthosewillbepossible,orwhatshapetheywilltake.

Inthemidstofthiscomesthechallengetousfrom'Blacklivesmatter'aboutingrained racismwithin theworld, nation andmaybewithin our lives aswell.The horriLic death of George Floyd in the USAwas the catalyst of the currentprotests,butwithinthiscountrytheWindrushscandaladdstothestoryandthefelt injusticeofmany. Additionally there is the increased incidenceofdeath intheBAME(BlackAsianandMinorityEthnic)community fromCovid19. WhilstthejuryisstilloutontheprecisecausesofthisitalladdstothecontextwithinwhichweLindourselves.

Sohowdowerespond?MaybeaLirstresponseistorealisewhatwehave. Whatcanyougivethanksfortoday?Ifwedevelopasenseofgratitudeitcanhelpustodevelopanawarenessofwhatwe have and thatmay help us to desire justice for others, to care forthosewhohavelessandthosewhomaybeatthereceivingendofinjusticeanddiscrimination. Gratitudemeansthatweknowwhatwehave,andthatcanhelpusbecomemoreawareofwhatothersdonothave. Somaybe in thenext twoweekseachdaygivethanksforsomethingdifferent,andbecomeawareofthosewhodonothavewhatwehave.

AsecondresponsemightbetoLindanorganisationthatworksinanareathatwe'vebecomeawareofthroughdevelopinggratitudeandthankfulness.Itmightbe a Christian organisation, e.g. TEAR Fund but there are many otherorganisations, those that work with political prisoners like AmnestyInternational,ora localFoodBankorsimilarorganisation,e.g.Lord'sLarderinYeovilorGlastonburyFoodBank. Therearemanyotherswhatcountsisactingonourawarenessofthesituationandonthegratitudethatwehave.

AthirdresponsemightbetoturnthatgratitudeintothankingGodforallthatHehasgiventous.We'recomingtotheendofanextraordinarytimeinthelifeofournation,butCovidhasnotgoneaway,andisnotgoingtoforquitesometime.Black lives matter as an organisation began in 2012, following the death ofTrayvonMartinashevisitedhislocalsupermarket,andthesubsequentacquittalofthepersonwhoshothim.Thepaceofchangeis,atbestslow,butwecanlearnfrom individual contributions which may help us to develop gratitude andthankfulness.

Maybe the best example of someone rising above the situation they werefacedwithisthatofPatrickHutchinson,aBlacklivesmattersupporter,carryingsomeoneinjuredinacounterprotesttosafetyontheirshoulder. Iwonderhowthatcounterprotester feelsnow. Has it changedhisviews,and ishegrateful?Patrickputhislifeatriskforthesakeofsomeonewhohedidn'tknowbuthesawindanger.InJesusGodhasdonemorethanthat,andhasgivenusabundantlife,a life forwhichwecangive thanks,anda life thatchallengesusabouthowwelivewith thosewhoareourphysicalneighbours, aswell as thosewhoareourneighboursinsharinghumanity.

I think we all found it slightly terrifying recordingourselvessingingbuthavebeendelightedwiththeresults.

Wemissmeeting together to sing, so ournext aim is to begin regular sessionsagainusingZoom.Thesewillbequitedifferenttonormalrehearsals,butatleastwewill be able to unite aswe sing some of our favourite hymns and songs toprepare for more recording. The general advice for singingcollectivelymakesbleakreading,sothiswillneedtobecomeour new "normal". I think we all found it slightly terrifying recordingourselvessingingbuthavebeendelightedwiththeresults.

Wemissmeeting together to sing, so ournext aim is to begin regular sessionsagainusingZoom.Thesewillbequitedifferenttonormalrehearsals,butatleastwewill be able to unite aswe sing some of our favourite hymns and songs toprepare for more recording. BishopRuthsays,“IsentmybestwishestotheZambianbishopsthisweekasIhavebeenunabletovisit.I’msoverysorrythatIcan’tjointhembuthopeandtrustthat they and all our Zambian brothers and sisters continue to know God’s richblessingsandresourcefulpeaceatthistime.Iassuredthebishopsthatwecontinueto pray for them and look forward to the timewe can join together once againeitherinZambiaorwhentheLambethConferencecantakeplace.Iknowthatmanyothers across the diocese also continue to hold Zambia in their prayers andwasdelightedtohearfromKarenButtthisweek,whoisoneoftheteamwhovisitedaspart of the 40RS anniversary celebrations. Covid-19TrackandTraceScamThe following transcript and information have been issued by Avon andSomersetPoliceregardingaCovid–19NHSTrackandTraceScam.Someonereceivedacallasfollows:-ThecallerstatedtheywerefromtheNHStrackandtraceserviceandaccordingtotheirsystemthememberhadcomeintoclosecontactwithsomeonewhohadtestedpositiveforCovid-19,thereforetheyneededtoself-isolatefor7daysandtakeaCovid-19test.(FirstmistakeIsolationis14Days)ThememberqueriedwhothispersonwasandadvisedthiswasconLidentialbutmusttakethetestin72hours.“Thecalleraskedforthemembersaddressandthiswas provided and was then asked for a payment card and a one off fee of£500”(Secondmistake,theywillnotaskforpayment)astherearepenaltiesfornotcomplying. Fortunately,thememberspottedthisscamandhungupthephone.

Therewere also otherswhowere initiallyworking independently, such asmyself,whomadeafewscrubsetsforourGPsonandhiscolleaguesinaYeovilsurgerybecausetheyweredesperateforthemandsimplycouldn’tsourcethemanywhere.OverthenextfewweeksTauntonScrubbersmanagedtofund-raisetobuymore fabricandreceivedmany fabricdonationsaswell. Fromthosesmallbeginningsthegroupgrewandgrewandnowhasnearly1000activemembers.

The logistics of running this group was immense withdriving instructors amongst others giving their time andvehiclestocollectanddeliverthefabric,haberdasheryandLinished items. Volunteers were Litting sewing aroundtheir work, their families and all the other demands oftheir lives. Dining tables were commandeered to set upsewing stations. Whole rooms were required to cut outboltsoffabric.Asupermarketgavespaceasa‘warehouse’.

ThegroupbecamesoactivethatitwassubdividedintohubsandKeintonMandevillebecameahubformorethan30 people in Castle Cary, North Barrow, Evercreech,Butleigh,Barton,CharltonsandKeinton.Ourhubbecameone of the most productive with large rolls of fabricarriving,beingcutandthenstitchedup.Lookingbackwehave sewn lilac, blue, green, pink, cream, red fabric andrandomsetscutoutofdonatedduvetcovers.Othersmade

waisttiesoutofsheetsorbags,headbandsandscrubhats.

Due to family connections in KeintonMandeville, some also sewed for CardiffChildren’s Hospice with Lego, Disney,Spiderman,unicornfabricandmore.We are told that these not only raised themorale of the wonderful staff that worktherebutalsobroughtasmiletothefacesoftheyoungpatients.Fabricwasdelivered toTauntonsometimesat a rate of a third of a tonne a week andthen distributed. Demand was so high theTauntonScrubbersworkeddirectlywiththeSomerset NHS Partnership Trust to ensure

Whattalentwehaveinthisarea!Sadly,ourhubmadesomany items that I had to stop counting. Certainly 100 scrubsets in the Lirst twoweeksandwe justkeptongoing, gettingmore volunteers and more items. Now our machines arecreaking,ourbacksareachingandourhandsaretired.

The Greek philosopher,Heraclitus, writing some 500 years before Christ, was agreatproponentofthis.Heisknownforsaying:‘Thereis

nothingpermanentexceptchange’andthatyoucannotstepintothesamerivertwice. BythishemeantthatjustastheriverLlowssothatyoucannottouchthesamewatertwice,sonotwosituationsareexactlythesameandthattheworldisconstantlychanging.

We live in a time of extraordinary change. Self-driving transport is nowpractical, not just for cars, but also perhaps more alarmingly for ships andaircraft.ArtiLicialIntelligenceisopeningamazingnewpossibilitiesandmedicineis advancing rapidly as the decoding of the human genome increases ourunderstandingofmanydiseases. Atthesametimeourworldgroansundertheweightoflifestylesandexploitationofresourceswhicharenotsustainable.IamwritingthisonWorldEnvironmentDayanditisbecomingincreasinglyclearthatweneedtochangethewaywelivebeforewereekevenmorehavocontheworldwhichGodhasgivenustostewardandcarefor.

But in looking for change we need perhaps to look in rather than out.
