Feast of the Holy Family

Joseph gives us the perfect example of a father's duty to his family. A faith-filled man, he heeds the warning to take his wife and child and flee to Egypt, and again listens as he is told when it is safe to return. As children of God, we are given the same loving care by the Father who warns of dangers and promises us safety in our lives if we only entrust ourselves to him. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that the family is the original cell of social life. This means that a strong family is the proper initiation to a life in society; it also promotes strong moral values and a strident foundation for faith (CCC 2207). On this feast of the Holy Family, rededicate your efforts to building, maintaining and protecting a loving, faith-filled family in recognition of the example given by Joseph.

VIRTUS TRAINING “Protecting God’s Children” is an educational program that helps you recognize, prevent and respond appropriately to child abuse. Whether you are a parent, grandparent or anyone who has a child in your life, this program is a must. While VIRTUS training is mandated for all adult volunteers that have contact with children or youth, our goal is to educate as many people as possible about child abuse. This free training is open to all adults who are 18 or older. “Protecting God’s Children for Adults” will be offered at the following area locations on the dates noted:

Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Salem Sunday, January 6 1-4pm Our Lady of Nazareth, Roanoke Saturday, January 12 10am-1pm

To register or check additional dates for training sessions, go to www.virtusonline.org. Call Barbara in the church office for more information. A NEW YEAR’S OPPORTUNITY FOR CATECHISTS The time is here - to start on Pathways! Diane Drahos will offer 3 opportunities to complete most of the video portion of the program in January. Tentative dates are Friday, January 18 and Wednesday, January 23 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm and Sunday, January 27 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Watch for sign up sheets by the water fountain in the commons and further details in the bulletin. LENTEN MISSION 2008 – WHO ARE WE? WHOSE ARE WE? Mark your calendars now for our 2008 Valley Wide Lenten Mission. This year’s guest presenter will be Dr. Elinor Ford. Dr. Ford has long been a friend, a supporter, a champion and a challenger to those who so valiantly serve and lead the various ministries within Catholic education and parishes. She will lead us on a journey to discover who we are as a Eucharisting Community and how to share the gifts we have in service to others. She will help us to understand our Catholic identity, our Catholic commitment, and our Catholic call to action. Mission sessions will be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, February 25-27, 2008. Daytime sessions will be at Our Lady of Perpetual Help from 10 am until noon; evening sessions will be at Our Lady of Nazareth from 7 to 9 pm. MARY, MOTHER OF GOD This feast day falls on Tuesday, January 1 and is a non-obligatory holy day this year. OLPH will celebrate a vigil Mass on Monday, December 31 at 7:30 pm. IS GOD CALLING YOU? Do you feel drawn to the Catholic Church? If you would like to inquire about the Catholic faith, please call Diane Drahos at the parish office, 387-0491.

HELPING THE HOMELESS Our next week for hosting Interfaith Hospitality Network is scheduled for January 13-20. However, to make this happen we need someone to coordinate this vital ministry. We host IHN guests approximately 4-5 times during the year, and we need new coordinators for the IHN Ministry within OLPH. Tara O’Rourke, our IHN Coordinator for the past four years, has stepped down, and we need one or more parishioners willing to step in to keep our doors open. If you are willing to become more involved, please contact the office at 387-0491 or [email protected] or you can contact Tara O’Rourke at 389-8316 or email [email protected] for more information. Being a parish coordinator for IHN is a tangible and effective way to make a difference in the lives of people in real need. Please prayerfully consider this ministry.
