Anthems to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

At the conclusion of Night Prayer (or Evening Pray-er) the Church offers a final anthem in honour of

the Blessed Virgin Mary. The traditional anthem for Eastertide is the Regina Caeli.

The Regina Caeli.

Quia quem meruisti portare, alleluia.

Live-streaming of Masses at St Mary’s

Dear Guardian Angel, Go for me to the Church, there kneel down at Mass for me. At the Offertory, take me to God, and offer Him my service: what I am, what I have, offer as my gift. At the Consecra-tion, with your seraphic strength, adore my Saviour truly present, praying for those who have loved me, for those who have offended me, and for those now deceased, that the blood of Jesus may purify them all. During Holy Communion, bring to me the Body and Blood of Jesus uniting Him with me in spirit, so that my heart may become His dwelling place. Plead with Him, that through His sacrifice all people throughout the world may be saved. When the Mass ends, bring home to me and to every home, the Lord’s blessing. Amen

A Prayer shared by Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster and President of the

Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales.

THE PASSAGE OF TIME.

I was listening to the radio on Friday when a research physicist was reflecting on the nature of time. He spoke of how time is not as predictable as we might think. The theory of rela-tivity teaches us that time slows down the nearer a subject gets to light speed – I’m still waiting for the Star Trek era to dawn when even relativity seems to be thrown out the win-dow! The physicist said that there are variations to consider for our understanding of time within the sphere of thermo-dynamics and even more so with the arena of quantum-mechanics. He then went on to discus the perception of time within the circumstances we are now experiencing. During this pandemic we are conscious of the pressures faced by those who are on the front line in the battle against the virus and its impact. They do not have much time to pause. For them the experience is a matter of there being insufficient time to do what needs to be done. For others there is too much time available and the per-ception is that time has slowed down. Time should be understood as a precious commodity by us all, whatever our circumstances in any given moment. We are all capable of wasting time. At this time when our perceptions can become distorted, we should take the time to challenge our own presumptions. Today and every day is a precious and unrepeated oppor-tunity. Each day we should and must sustain the body, the mind and the soul. Each day dawns with opportunities for exploration, creativity and sanctification. Let us arrange for ourselves a ‘Day of Recollection’, a day to retreat into the depths of the soul, when we can contemplate all the dimensions of our place within the wonder of God’s created order and grapple with the implications of our faith in the Risen Lord. In our Sunday Gospel from Saint Luke we hear the account of how two disciples encountered Christ on the road to a village called Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem. The two disciples were joined by Christ, though they did not recognise him. Christ joins their conversation. They discuss. They listen. They learn. Eventually they share a meal and their eyes and hearts are opened. Let us use our time well in spiritual support of those who have so little time on their hands.

The Easter Season

The Memorare.

(A much neglected prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary.)

Remember, O most loving Virgin Mary, that it is a thing unheard of, that anyone ever had recourse to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, and was left forsaken. Filled there-fore with confidence in your goodness I fly to you, O Mother, Virgin of virgins. To you I come, before you I stand, a sorrowful sinner. Despise not my poor words, O Mother of the Word of God, but graciously hear and grant my prayer. Amen.
