It has always seemed to me one of the great ironies of the Liturgical Calendar that the feast of St. Patrick should fall well into Lent. Devotion to the great patron of Ireland, as everyone knows, is anything but Lenten and austere. This year his feast falls on Friday the 17th of March. On that day, parades will be held and mugs held aloft to celebrate the great missionary to the Irish. But who was St. Patrick and how is it that a saint who lived so long ago can remain so beloved among people today? While historical facts about St. Patrick are not many, there are at least two authenticated letters by him, including his “Confessions” which give a fairly detailed story of his extraordinary life. He was born in Roman-ruled Britain, the son of a prominent public official. In his mid-teens, he was captured by Irish pirates, sold into slavery and taken to Ireland where he was put to herding cattle for six years. This traumatic experience apparently changed Patrick from a spoiled young man into a person ready to dedicate himself totally to God. He eventually escaped and made his way back to England where he studied for the priesthood. It might seem extraordinary that Patrick would return to Ireland, a place that could not have held fond memories for him, but his religious superiors decided that, since Patrick spoke Gaelic, he would be well suited for missionary work in that still-pagan country. Over time, Patrick had great success in making converts and establishing parishes in various parts of the country. He was soon appointed as the first Bishop of Ireland where for many years he continued his pastoral labors, often under very difficult circumstances. Legend suggests that Patrick single-handedly converted all of Ireland, but his own writings make clear that this occurred slowly over time and with the collaboration of many missionaries, monks and lay catechists. Even so, St. Patrick’s influence marked the Irish Church for centuries and his initial efforts came to flower in what became the most Catholic country of northern Europe. During the early Middle Ages, Ireland exported its own unique Celtic style of Catholic spirituality to the monasteries of other countries. This Irish Catholicism, sometimes severe and puritanical in tone, came to characterize the American Church which was built up through the efforts of immigrant Irish priests during the 19th and well into the 20th century. If anyone glances through the succession of pastors at almost any of the parishes of our Archdiocese, he or she will discover that the vast majority of the first priests were either native-born Irishmen or the sons and grandsons of Irish immigrants. It shouldn’t surprise us that St. Patrick gave his name to our local seminary, that he is the co-patron, along with St. Francis of Assisi of this Archdiocese, and that he continues, over 1,500 years after his death, to exert such a powerful pull on our Catholic imaginations and on our prayers. Fr. Ulysses

P. Ulises

Sister Parish News

Our recent trip to our Sister Parish, St. Francis Xavier, in Kiraeni, Tanzania, was an opportunity to renew friendships and to celebrate Fr. Paulinus’ 25th anniversary as a priest. During this trip we met with children from the parish, their religious education teachers, and other groups. From the pastor, Fr. Mafonye, we learned that due to even less rain than usual there is a serious shortage of food in the village. Many families are able to eat only one meal per day, creating a situation of life-threatening hunger in the village. During this Lenten season, we ask that you help us purchase grain for the poorest families. If you write a check please include “Sister Parish” on the memo line. For any questions please contact Lucinda Dei Rossi at (650)743-5925.
