Even during the more somber and penitential season of Lent, Sundays remain a “time outside of time” and are not counted in the 40 days. Nevertheless, you will notice changes that set the season apart with more starkness, sobriety, and silence. We will begin services with a silent procession punctuated by the chiming of bells. We open with the Penitential Rite and the reading of the Decalogue or a Summary of the Law. We are experimenting with singing the psalm together, so that we pray as a body through the rhythmic breathing of Anglican chant. We have changed the Eucharistic Prayer and the Prayer of Thanksgiving so that we reconsider the words we are saying. During the season of Lent, we will make a special effort to keep silence before the service and after the service as a way of sanctifying the space for worship, self-examination and self-reflection. To respect those seeking that quiet before and after services, please take conversations out of the sanctuary as we strive to balance the different mood of Lent with the joy of our corporate worship. May this Lenten season be holy and nourishing!

MARCH 12, 2017

A Note from the Worship Council

Sundays, always days of resurrection, are a time to celebrate with joy and boisterous connection and conversation. our mission

As God’s people, we will share the love of God in a way that nurtures body, mind and spirit. Demonstrating God’s love for the world, we will serve a diverse population and accept one another without reservations. By including all people as one family in worship and service to God, we are all empowered and inspired by

the Spirit to continue the work of Jesus Christ.

PRAYER SHAWL LOVEMy dear friend is suffering from frontal lobe dementia. After one of her episodes, I visited her at home and took her a prayer shawl from Trinity. It happened to be the one I had knit. I told her about the project and told her that as I knit, I prayed for the person who would receive the shawl. She kept holding it and rocking and saying “Oh!, Oh!” She loved the warm colors and soft feel.A few days later I visited with her again and she was wrapped in the shawl. “I feel like I am wrapped in hugs!” she said. Everytime I visit, she is wrapped in the shawl. She pats it and tells me again, she is wrapped in a hug. This shawl ministry has blessed me as much as it blesses the recipient. Reported by Jeannie ChristensonIs there someone in your prayers that would benefit from the prayer shawl love we extend? If you know of someone who you would like to gift a Trinity prayer shawl, please contact Norma Stuck, [email protected], 964-5807 or call the office. When we bless the Prayers Shawls today think about the creative volunteers and the unknown recipients. You are invited to become a knitter or crocheter in this circle of love. Consider doing one shawl for our cupboard this year. Yarn has been donated for those who would like to use it. Added this year is a prayer shawl knitting circle which meets the fourth Tuesday evening of the month to continue sharing the love of knitting and crocheting. Please note a schedule change for March. The circle will meet March 21, the third Tuesday. Nanette McIntyre convenes this group. Please contact her if you interested joining this group, [email protected]

LENT AT TRINITY: Leaning Out Into Community Co-sponsored by Adult Formation and Justice and Outreach Councils

Here’s what’s happening this week in the Lenten Series: A journey toward becoming a mission-oriented parish that actively seeks neighbors and builds bridges. Full schedule in the Leaning Out Into Community flyer on page 7. IDEAS (Undocumented Students from UCSB), Sunday, March 12, 11:30-12:30.The lives of these remarkable and empowered young “Dreamers” are central in the ongoing debate about immigration reform. Please welcome our first guests and see how we can walk with them on their journey to social justice.

IMPLICIT BIAS, a facilitated training session, Tuesday March 14, 6:30-8:00.We all have unconscious biases that affect our thoughts and actions—even when we think we are fair and objective. Come take a fun and simple test, learn about implicit bias theory, and start to “de-bias.” Facilitated by Lizzie Rodriguez of Restorative Communities Network, a community activist who has led healing work in Rwanda.

Trinity Reads: Our recommended companion book for Lent and beyond is Progressive Faith and Practice: Thou Shalt Not Stand Idly By, by Roger L. Ray. This book articulates a progressive faith that combines the academic work of the modern biblical critical movement and the historical Jesus work of the Jesus Seminar applied within the life of an active parish. Ray strives to apply Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel’s injunction (“Thou shalt not stand idly by”) to actively respond to the injustice, violence and discrimination in the world. Available for purchase at Chaucer’s or online.

EASTER FLOWER DECORATIONSPlease use the envelope in the pew for this year’s Easter church decorations. Fill out the form on the front, put your check for $20 or cash in the envelope and place it in the offering plate or give it to the Welcome Table after church. Please print clearly.

Level II will do further work with the materials for the City of Jerusalem, and reflect together on several penitential psalms. Level III will continue their discussion of the Old Testament accounts of Abraham and Sarah, this week considering the near sacrifice of Isaac and God’s response to Abraham’s actions.

THE REV. MICHAEL CORRIGAN JOINS STAFF AS PASTORAL ASSOCIATE Michael Corrigan will be joining the staff of Trinity as the Pastoral Associate. Raised up for ordination by this parish, Michael has served as Chaplain at Cottage Hospital and as an assisting priest at Trinity and neighboring parishes. Joining the staff part-time, he will have a special focus on pastoral care, visiting, and teaching. After filling in as Priest in Charge during the upcoming season of Lent at St. Mark’s, Los Olivos, he will fold into the liturgical rota at Trinity. We are so grateful for the many skills he brings to the team and for his strong and gentle pastoral presence.

Baptism, a principle sacrament of the church, is a joyous public service of initiation. The gathered community takes vows to support the newly baptized, celebrates with and welcomes them. At Trinity we baptize people of any age within regular worship services. Here is the schedule of baptismal service for 2017:• Saturday, April 15, at the Easter Vigil

BETTY WENZEL JOINS STAFF AS PROGRAM ASSISTANTWe welcome Betty Wenzel to the staff of Trinity as the Program Assistant. Betty began helping out as an Executive Assistant on November 1, 2016 as a contract employee. With her effective organizational skills, keen ability to anticipate, and engaged spirit to learn new things, she was hired part time on staff to administer programs, especially around membership inclusion and shared ministry support. She will work closely with clergy to help them support the many ministries represented by the Parish Council.

Betty worked most recently at McCombs Consulting and as Operations Director of The Beatitudes Society where she managed communications, donor cultivation and events, grant writing, web and social media presence.

An invested member of Trinity, we are so grateful for her continued ministry and her joining the staff team in this invaluable way.

LANDSCAPE PROJECTWe invite you to support Trinity’s sustainable landscape project, LOOKING BEYOND OURSELVES: Final Phase, First Impression. Visit the landscape table at coffee hours throughout Lent to ask questions, see the plans and make a donation to the plant fund. This is the final phase of our Capital Campaign which includes sustainable landscaping and accessibility upgrades. The project and fundraising efforts were introduced at a forum on March 5th. If you missed the forum, please view the video on TrinitySB.org.

about pledging

Our vision of Stewardship recognizes that God is the giver and has blessed each one of us with many gifts. Common to us all is the privilege and blessing of how we use the precious gifts of our time, talent and treasure. Stewardship is the spiritual practice of discerning the use of these gifts in building God’s dream of love and justice in our hearts, relationships and world. At Trinity we call your gift of time and talent Shared Ministry and we call your gift of treasure a pledge. Pledge forms are available at the Welcome Table.
