Advisors must “release” an advisee in order for a student to register for classes. Beginning this year, the 2017-2018 FAFSA becomes available October 1, 2016. This change aims to give students more time to consider financial decisions when covering college expenses. All of the changes streamline the process and provide your student with the greatest chance of receiving aid. Here are three things to keep in mind when applying for financial aid for 2017-2018: 1. Students will be able to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for 2017-2018 as early as Oct. 1, 2016. 2. You and your student will use completed tax information from two years prior. Ex: You will use 2015 tax information if your student plans on attending college during the 2017-18 school year. When completing the FAFSA, you will have the option to enter income information with the IRS Data Retrieval tool. This tool will import income and tax information from 2015, allowing you to complete the FAFSA faster, with greater accuracy and assure an earlier notification of financial aid eligibility. 3. Some families may have had a significant change in their income since they filed their 2015 federal taxes. If so, contact the LCSC Financial Aid Office at (208) 792-2224 for assistance.
