Girls Fencing

With the new academic year has come a wider variety of different sporting activities for girls in Chiswick Community School. The broader curriculum has offered Boxer-cise, Aerobic classes and Spinning and the coveted opportunity to get inducted in the gym at Chiswick New Pool.

Not only have these fresh activities helped to cater to the numerous sporting interests in Chiswick, it has also opened the door for a wider participation in sporting within school. The newest experience within the realms of sports for the girls here at Chis-wick has been the introduction of fencing. The one-off session gave the girls a taste and feel for the sport. All who were in-volved threw themselves into the tasks that were set by the instructor and the session was one that was greatly enjoyed by all.

Chiswick is excited by new activities and is exceptionally pleased with the way in which the girls have embraced the various challenges that each of the new sports has thrown at them.

On the afternoon of Friday November 18th a group of Media Studies Students, cho-sen by Mr. Wootton, visited the studios of Channel 5 News, Sky News and OK TV. They were made very welcome by Sam Farley, production manager and Jane Flynn 5 News producer.

Students also met Jenny Frost and James Brazier presenters of OK TV as well as Matt Barbett Channel 5 news presenter. Mr Whiting, accompanying the trip with Mr. Wootton, was astounded to be stand-ing inches behind Sir Cliff Richard, a pro-gramme guest, who also introduced himself to the students.

As well as watching the programme being

made, students were given the opportunity to try out the different TV roles. Giulia Piscitelli operated a camera, Dylan Carty scrolled the autocue whilst various students tried out reading the cues as if they were presenters.

Olympic Park trip

Wex FactorLast Tuesday, thirteen lucky students were given the opportunity to visit the Olympic Park to witness the progress that has been made in preparation for the London 2012 Olympics.

The excited students were given a tour of the massive 500 acre park in which they saw the numerous stadiums that will be used during the Games. While the tour was both fascinating and insightful, the major-ity of students who attended agreed that the highlight was a walk up the Greenway, where they observed some of the best views of the main attraction, the grand Olympic stadium. Jadya Hirons of 7 Paxton ex-

Giulia practising using professional filming equipment at studios of Chan-nel 5 News, Sky News and OK TV.

pressed her enthusiasm for the trip by say-ing ‘it was excellent to gain such an amaz-ing experience.’ Her view was mirrored by fellow peer Beth Sheenan who said ‘it was a once in a life time experience to see the stadium before lots of others and see it be-fore those with tickets!’

All students who attended the trip voiced an excitement and positivity for the 2012 games and are all excited to be part of the country that has been given the privilege to host it.

On Wednesday the 16th November, Year 10 experienced the 3rd stage of the 'Wex factor' delivered by Hounslow Education Business Partnership.

The Wex Factor is ‘a holistic, fully planned and supported work experience package, especially designed to support young peo-ple as they set out on their very important journey from school into employment.’

The third level focused on interview skills.

Every Year 10 student was asked to wear outfits deemed 'professional' and that they would wear to an actual interview. This made the process all the more realistic and enjoyable for the students.

The Year 10s participated in a range of ac-tivities which contributed towards the 'job process' they will each, inevitably have to encounter one day.

Every form was allocated a helper from the Hounslow committee, and they helped carry out the tasks. Starting with simple 'in-terview techniques', it progressed right up to filling in an actual job application. They learnt skills which they wouldn't necessar-ily have known if the Wex factor hadn't happened.

The final task, which everyone was look-ing forward to, was the interview. Given by an employee from Chiswick Business Park, the students had to participate in a realistic interview.

Some students felt nervous as they waited for their go. At the end of the school day, the students found out whether they had been hired for the job they applied for.

‘I learnt a lot about going to interviews. I did not realise it was a good idea to re-search the company you are applying to work for’, said Henry Ellis, a Year 10 stu-dent. ‘ I got the job at the end of the day so I was happy’.

All in all, it was a very successful day! I'm sure many students can't wait until the fi-nal, third Wex factor level- involving a work placement- which is equivalent to one whole GCSE.

‘I used to like watching the Bill’, says Jenicka,’and that made me really interested in police work. From the start of the Sixth Form my Mum and Ms. Emmett have been pushing me to join up.’

By studying Health and Social Care at Chiswick and attending Police Cadets, Jenicka has been accepted to become a fully fledged member of the Metropolitan Police from September.

While attending cadets Jenicka won a special Jack Petchey award at a London wide competi-tion. She was pitted against other cadets from all over London and won the event which involved her working on a variety of police skills includ-ing forensics, firearms, stop and search and horses. PC Ross Martin, her sergeant in charge of cadets, said to her, ‘You are very talented. You must now go and follow your dreams’.

‘I am inspired now to join the force’, says Jen-icka. ‘I really want to fight crime and help pre-vent it.’

Jenicka’s skills are evident in the school canteen where she does a wonderful job controlling the queuing students. She will also get a chance to try out police work during the Olympics. We wish her all the best for the future. Chiswick will miss their very own PC.
