MATHS AND ENGLISH

College life is in full swing and exam time will be with us very soon. Please make a note of these important dates: GCSE exam dates

English exam dates: 4th June 2019 – Paper 1 and 7th June 2019 – Paper 2 Maths exam dates: 21th May 2019 – Non-calculator, 6th June 2019 – Calculator and 11thJune 2019 – Calculator Functional Skills exam dates

Will be throughout the year as and when your son or daughter is ready to sit the exam. Maths exams and English exams will start to take place from February 2019.

Working on maths and/or English at home has been proven to increase students’ chance of gaining a grade 4 or above in GCSE. This is also true for achieving in Functional Skills. Your child can access the College intranet from home and work on skill areas they need to develop. When homework is set, can you please encourage your child to complete it on time and hand it in? This will help their teacher ensure they are on track. The College will be offering sessions to support with exam coping strategies across the whole College. These will not only help with English and maths exams, but also exams in the area they are studying. We also have our amazing Easter Conference happening week commencing 15th April 2019. Please look out for key information each month on this. CAREERS TEAM

The Careers team are currently supporting almost 600 level 3 students to research and apply for Higher Education choices, via the UCAS application process. Over 90 applications have already been submitted to UCAS, with students applying for a wide range of subject areas, including- Psychology, Paramedic Science, Film-making, Primary Education, Veterinary Science, Popular Music Performance, Japanese, Medicine, Counselling Practice, Politics and International Relations, Nursing, Computer Science, Physiotherapy, Accounting, Social Work, Illustration and Radiotherapy.

If you are supporting a student who is in the process of applying, or considering applying, for Higher Education this year - please ask them to complete and submit their online UCAS form as soon as possible

and see their personal tutor to complete the hand-in checklist. Careers staff are available on all sites, at various times, for students to call in for advice or assistance if needed. All student groups should have received a session delivered by Careers staff on 'Applying to Higher Education' and been given a comprehensive 'Applying to HE ‘guide to help with all aspects of the process (limited replacement paper copies of the booklet are available from Careers staff). An electronic version of the booklet is available on the 'My Career' site on Moodle.

DERBY COLLEGE STUDENTS PREPARE TO PITCH TO GOGGLEBOX STAR

Students across Derby College are gearing up to take part in an innovative entrepreneurial programme devised by former teacher Baasit Siddiqui who regularly appears with his brother and father in Channel 4’s ‘Gogglebox’. Mr Siddiqui has been a star of the television show for the past six years and has set up Siddiqui Education – running inspirational workshops for schools and colleges across the UK. Read more.

Opportunity for students to earn some money for Christmas working for Flower World in Sinfin Derby

A fabulous opportunity has been offered to Derby College students to apply for part-time work at Flower World. If your child is interested they can apply. All applications must be received in the recruitment office at the Roundhouse by the 5th December. Students can email [email protected]. Sally needs students full name, contact number and email address in order to process their interest. Inductions will be held at the College when all applications have been processed. Sally will email all interested parties to confirm induction bookings Please note: Students cannot miss classes so must ensure that they very clear about the times that they can work. If their tutors can adjust their timetable they will but they must ask. If they do not turn up for College then they will then not be accepted to work.

DERBY COLLEGE AWARDS CAREER MARK GOLD

Derby College has been awarded the top accreditation for the fourth time in recognition of its consistent quality in providing careers, employability and enterprise advice and guidance for students at its campuses in Derby, Ilkeston and Morley. The College was visited earlier this summer by Career Mark, the licensed awarding body, who assessed how students were supported with planning the next stage of their lives – whether that be higher education, apprenticeships, employment or starting their own businesses. Teaching staff at Derby College Group will be welcomed as members of the Society for Education and Training (SET) thanks to a new corporate partnership. Caterpillar UK Re-launches Leicestershire Apprenticeship Programme with Derby College

The Leicestershire manufacturing plant of Caterpillar's Building Construction Products Division in Desford has re-launched its pioneering apprenticeship programme with Derby College.
