Welcome Letter from Cape Cod Moms Founder Amy

In October of 2010 I became a mom for the first time and my life changed forever in ways I never expected. As many of you are aware, parenting is HARD! There is no instruction manual for how to do it right and like most I wing it, give it 100% and hope for the best. Luckily I joined a breastfeeding support group filled with amazing women from all walks of life. No matter our differences, we all came together for a common goal: raising our children. It was that group which inspired me to begin Cape Cod Moms. I wanted to create an online space that had something to offer everyone. It is a space to find advice, events, share recipes, expe-riences and more. Today we have grown to be a powerful resource for the parents and care-givers in our community with a powerful team of parent bloggers. This growth inspired us to create the first ever Parent Resource Fair on Cape Cod in 2018. Now in our 3rd year, we hope to connect all of you with some of the amazing non-profits and businesses that work every day to help the families living here on Cape Cod successfully support their children. Be sure to visit our speakers and vendors and see the amazing resources we have in our community! Remember, you are never alone in your journey; others have been there too. Thank you for supporting us over the years and we hope to continue to support all of you! Strong communi-ties raise strong children who turn into strong adults and future leaders.

"Navigating Grief with Your Family & Children" with Amy Wyman, Good Grief Cape Cod

Time: 9:30am

Amy will share advice and tips on how to navigate grief together as a family. Grief comes in many forms whether through the loss of a parent, sibling, family members, pets and neighbors. Grief can impact chil-dren in many ways. Come learn about the resources available in our community and information to help your family through the process.

Speakers

Amy Wyman, founder and music therapist, holds a duel Baccalaureate degree in Early Childhood Education and Child Life from Wheelock College and an M.A. in Expressive Art Therapies with a specialization in Music Therapy from Lesley University. She has 15+ years of experience in Early Childhood Education; is a National Childcare Teacher Award recipient; and is a Strong advocate for the under-served. Amy spends most of her spare time focused on using her talents and resources to help her local communi-ty. From her music therapy business Tones in Motion, which bridges the generational gap between the elderly and the youth, to her Good Grief workshops and fundraisers, she's always finding ways to make this community, and the world, a better place.

Sara has degrees in Children’s Literature and European Literature. She completed her PhD in English Literature at the University of Edinburgh, where she specialized in Book History and Fairy Tales. At Eight Cousins Bookstore, she is one of the co-owners and handles the children's book buying, events, and programing as well as the store's digital media and marketing. She gives classes on language development and early literacy at the Falmouth Hospital to expectant parents and regularly visits the breastfeeding group to model story time and encourage reading and language-rich opportunities. She wel-comes every opportunity to talk the importance (and fun!) of reading to babies.

Family story time engages young learners and helps develop communication skills, including literacy, so-cial/emotional, empathy, and critical thinking. By modeling story time opportunities, this interactive workshop uses Bear Snores On to highlight the wide ranging impact that sharing stories has for children.

"Empowering Children About Body Safety" with Jacob Stapledon, Children's Cove Time: 12:15pm Jacob will hold a workshop for parents in how to talk to kids in age appropriate ways about body safety. This workshop will be designed to help parents feel more con-fident in having conversations with children to empower them to be more confident in using correct terms for their bodies, be their own advocates, and how to ask for help if something makes them uncomfortable. Jacob will also give information on how to ask for support in a safe and confidential way for parents who are unsure of who

Jacob is a native Cape Codder who has worked in a variety of human service and education roles supporting individu-als of all ages, genders and backgrounds. Jacob believes that prevention education is the key to combating child sexual abuse, and that early intervention and care after abuse with a focus on healthy futures leads to strong and resilient adults. Jacob re-ceived a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice from Mas-sachusetts College of Liberal Arts and found his passion providing training and edu-cation to those supporting individuals who have experienced trauma by focusing on recovery, advocacy and strength-based approaches. This passion lead of training, education and prevention lead him to Children’s Cove, the Cape & Islands Child Ad-vocacy Center where he works to raise awareness of child abuse issues, prevention education for parents and caregivers, and how to best respond to children who have made disclosures of abuse for anyone who works with children. Jacob is a member of Cape Cod Young Professionals, a graduate of the Community Leadership Institute, a partner to a wonderful woman, a father of incredible twins, an adventurer, out-doorsman, and craft beer enthusiast. Top 5 FREE Family Friendly Outdoor Cape Cod Activities White Cedar Swamp in Wellfleet (recommended by Cape Cod Mom Sarah) Experience a gorgeous hike like no other, located near Marconi Beach, that makes you feel as if you are in a land of Once Upon A Time. The hike is approximately 1.5 miles and has a lot of uphill walking. There are some paths off the Boardwalk where you can cross to the dunes and see the beach, or you can stroll the winding boardwalk and pretend you are in another world. Tip: Bring bug Repellent

Beech Forest in Provincetown (recommended by Cape Cod Mom Bryana) Another great tree paradise is Beech Forest. You can stroll trails and listen to the birds as you explore nature with the kids. Fish Hatchery in Sandwich (recommended by Cape Cod Mom Trish) We absolutely love the Sandwich Fish Hatchery and have raved about it before (Sandwich Fish Hatchery Review). It is the perfect place to entertain the young kids. Make sure to bring some quarters to get fish pellets. Toss the pellets in and watch the frenzy! Tip: Bring a paper cup

Burgess Park in Marstons Mills (recommended by Cape Cod Mom Sarah) Burgess Park is a Disc Golf course with 18 holes set in the gorgeous shade of the woods. It is fun for all ages and can be great exercise for the whole family. Even your littles will enjoy trying to toss a disc into the basket! If you are lucky, your kids will be exhausted after this busy day!

If you live in Brewster you may already know about the Brewster Tidal Flats, perhaps

you have even walked them. If you do not live in Brewster, or are unfamiliar with the

town- you may just be missing out on one of Cape Cod’s many free outdoor activities.

The Brewster Tidal Flats, regarded as some of the largest tidal flats in North America,

run from Brewster to Eastham. A walk along these flats provides you a firsthand

glimpse at both marsh and seaside environments.

Though tidal goers are urged to not walk on the flats themselves for safety concerns

such as the hazard of tidal creeks between sandbars, this remarkable expanse of na-

ture is still guaranteed to please.

If you plan on visiting the tidal flats, it is recommended that you walk along the flats

on a clear day with little wind, while paying special attention to the tides on the day of

your visit. For more information on the Brewster Tidal Flats such as parking, entry

Cape Kids Cast is the first Cape Cod Kid online news channel broadcasted every Fri-day. These local kids will bring you all the latest Cape Cod News including awesome upcoming events as well as special interest pieces plus reviews and interviews with local kid friendly businesses. The kids choose the businesses and write their own questions and we simply help format and edit it all. This news channel came about as a result of the kids wanting their own YouTube channel. Rather than unwrapping gifts or watching other kids play games, we decided to take it a step further and really practice life skills including, communication, public speaking, reading, writing and more! Healthier Donuts for Kids By: Pamela When your child is obsessed with #donuts you make a healthy-ish version using spelt flour, agave, coconut oil, protein powder, eggs, unsweetened applesauce. Check out this delicious kid approved recipe below.

Then add the wet mixture to the dry mixture. Then Bake 15 min at 375 in a donut tin. Create the glaze: Glaze is 1/4 c dark chocolate with 1t coconut oil melted. Dip top in this then sprinkles.

First 1c spelt flower 3 scoops protein powder (I used organic vanilla) 1/2 t baking soda 1/4 t baking powder 1/8 t pink Himalayan salt Mix together dry

Next: 2 eggs 1/2 c unsweetened apple sauce 1T avocado oil 1T vanilla 3T agave Mix together wet.

Have you heard of "The Wishing Tree"? Maybe you know it by the other names people call it: "The Conch Tree" or "The Prayer Tree"? It is a tree long past the peak of its life, located out on a little spit at the tip of Long Beach in Barnstable. Apparently several years ago, shells started to adorn the branches of this tree. The shells are not your traditional Caribbean conch shells; these are the New England Conchs aka Whelks. It is located in Barnstable near Craigville Beach. You have 2 options: you can park at Craigville Beach (45 min-

1 hour walk with children) or you can try to park in the smaller lots for Long Beach (30-45 min walk with children). Both lots are resident-only lots so plan your adventure accordingly. We decided to venture out late one afternoon to find the elusive sanctuary. We were able to park down near Long Beach which was a huge plus. We armed ourselves with water, snacks and sunblock as the Tiny One took off in search of the magical wishing tree. The walk took us about 45 minutes and we stopped a few times to explore. Along the way we found interesting shells, some fantastic skipping stones, and friendly birds. Once the tree ap-peared in sight, we all took off running to see who could get there first. The tree did not disappoint. It is covered in a couple hundred shells of varying sizes. Some have been stuck directly on the branches, while others have been tied to beach grass and hung delicately. We spent a lot of time enjoying the tranquility this hidden gem offers. We made our wishes and enjoyed the experience of exploring a new spot for the very first time together. Just past the Wishing Tree is a sand bar area where people have arranged stones to form names, designs or words of inspiration. Interestingly, when we got home I looked at the area on Google Earth and I was able to see many of the designs, specifically the spiral we had come across earlier in the day. We really enjoyed getting some family exercise while finding a new spot that even these locals did not know existed. It is always fun to explore where you live and be surprised. Cape Cod is so unique! There are many things to do here that are free and fun. Afternoons like this make us appreciate what we have! We highly recommend taking a trek out to The Wishing Tree with your family. The walk might sound long, but the reward is well worth it! There's nothing better than a family spending time to-gether!
