The Digital Technologies Lab Gets Ready for Tech Week, 18-27 May 2018 Tech Week' 18 is about innovation for good and promotes a clear message that it requires a collaborative approach for that to happen. We on the Coast have decided to pool our ideas together to showcase what some of our students are doing with 'Technology for Good' and I have opened up the Digital technologies Lab for a few workshops. From Friday the 18th to Sunday the 27th May, the Greymouth High School Digital Technologies Lab has a few visitors coming through to run workshops with the students and the community of learners: Liam and Andrew for an e-Textiles and electronics workshops with Raspberry Pi and Sue and Tracey to introduce 3D printing on fabric. We are indeed fortunate that these wonderful people are donating their time for us and I hope to reciprocate this by running some Robotics and Programming workshops in Christchurch. You are welcome to come and visit the Digital Technologies Lab during these workshops; I have ensured that some workshops run after school, if you are keen to attend them. The official Tech Week Poster is also attached for you to peruse all the workshops available.

1st XV Rugby - Greymouth High School v Darfield High School On Wednesday 9th May we opened our 2018 1st XV Rugby season against the slick Darfield High School. Our boys came out strong giving Darfield a good run for their money limiting there scoring options and of course fronting up strong in the tackling department. We had a couple of opportunities that went begging trying to close the gap, but it was a great first half 7 - 15 to Darfield with Brett Rees (JPII student) using his speed to get a great try under the posts. The second half had Darfield come out even stronger creating some good pressure which again saw us falter in some potential scoring opportunities. Very proud of how our boys stayed together as a team and kept working hard through the second half, our scrummaging against a fine tuned team like Darfield put up an excellent fight and as always our backline with some speedsters created multiple problems. The second half saw Darfield run in 24 points and we touched down for another converted try, this time by Zeb Thompson (JPII student). Final score 14 - 39. It was great to have multiple JPII students join our side to create a stronger team to take on these bigger rugby schools, we hope to keep this combined side training together for the year. Thank you to West Coast Rugby for organising referee and assistant referees, to Blaketown Rugby Club for allowing us to use their grounds and clubrooms, Head Coach Mr Bermingham and Assistant Coach Mr McGirr, the hard working Rob Maitland and of course to our visitors Darfield High School. NEXT GAME: Wednesday 23rd May vs Buller High School. Kick off 12pm - field TBC.

Pictured left, Lance Wylie climbing high to successfully claim a contested lineout lifted by Jack Olsen (behind) and Jack Coleman. Fantastic intercept by Tristan Howard, pictured right, that nearly saw him score in the corner.
