Principal Message to ParentsGuardians Welcome parents and guardians to the Spring 2020 semester I am excited to start the new semester with you Our goal as the staff at HPHS is to continue working with you in order to create a rich learning environment for all of our students Student success is a shared responsibility between the staff students and parents I am excited and pleased to announce that in January our Junior cohort had a 92 passing rate on the ELA Regents Examination with 70 of our students passing the exam with a grade of 85-100 Congratulations to our students and to the English Department for your achievements Parents and guardians your contributions are invaluable to the school I look forward to continuing to work with you and to developing a relationship that will assist in the growth of your child Please encourage your child to attend after-school tutoring teachers are here to help all of our students This is also a reminder to log into your PupilPath account as a way of monitoring your childrsquos progress I look forward to seeing you at the next PTA meeting which is on Wednesday February 5th in the Library at 6pm Best Robert A Gentile Principal

What is a School Leadership Team The School Leadership Team (SLT) is a group of people who develop educational policies for their school They also make sure there are resources to support those policies SLTs
Provide ongoing evaluations of a schoolrsquos educational programs and their impact on student achievement
Play an important role in school-based decision-making
Help to make school cultures more collaborative
There are three members of the school community who must be members of the SLT

9th grade Global students just conducted a Book Fair where they presented a non-fiction book
from their classroom libraries that they read independently Some books students read Night by Eli Wiesel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi and The Reason I Jump by Naoki Higashida
10th grade Global students just studied the Industrial Revolution and had a Tea Party where each
student played the role of an historical character and had conversations from that perspective answering the Essential Question Was the industrial revolution more of a blessing or a curse Some people included Karl Marx Adam Smith and child factory workers
Some 11th grade US students had a student-led Socratic Seminar about the Essential
Question Was the Civil War inevitable Students also discussed the issue of whether Lincoln really deserves the title of Great Emancipator
12th Grade Participation in Government students recently wrote and delivered Soapbox Speeches
on issues in society that they would like to change This project is a collaboration with Civics for All program of the Dept of Education Students choose topics such as immigration teen depression animal abuse LGBTQ+ discrimination sexual harassment and standardized testing Six students were chosen to deliver their speeches in a city-wide event at the New York Historical Society

As part of the DOErsquos College Application Week CDI hosted several events to encourage seniors to apply to
colleges learn about alternatives complete their lists and meet with college representatives The largest
event was iApplied Over 60 students completed their CUNY application with a total of 150 students
completing applications that week Volunteers signed up to assist with the workshops students celebrated
by taking photos at the iApplied photo booth and raffles and t-shirts were given out It was a great event

Instruction and Student Support Office of Safety and Youth Development (LGBTQ Programs) and Includenyc
Join us to learn about the unique concerns and opportunities of siblings of individuals
with disabilities and how to support them through Sibshops and other strategies
Sibshops are fun supportive events for siblings the family members who share the
longest-lasting relationship with a person who has a disability Sibshops provide
children with opportunities to obtain peer support and make connections while
sharing the delights and challenges faced by having a sibling with special needs
Those who are interested in becoming certified Sibshop Facilitators are
professionals and parents educators service providers adult siblings and anyone
who would like to learn more about life as a sib
Participants attending the training will learn how to organize a Sibshop andexperience
one firsthand Sibshop Facilitator Certification Training
bull Friday April 3 ndash 900 am to 330 pm (Light refreshments will be provided)
bull Saturday April 4 - 900 am to 300 pm (Light refreshments will be provided)
Note Must attend both days for certification If interested in sibling issues but not
necessarily interested in how to run a Sibshop you can attend just the first day of the
two-day training

Provide ongoing evaluations of a schoolrsquos educational programs and their impact on student achievement
Play an important role in school-based decision-making
Help to make school cultures more collaborative
There are three members of the school community who must be members of the SLT

9th grade Global students just conducted a Book Fair where they presented a non-fiction book
from their classroom libraries that they read independently Some books students read Night by Eli Wiesel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi and The Reason I Jump by Naoki Higashida
10th grade Global students just studied the Industrial Revolution and had a Tea Party where each
student played the role of an historical character and had conversations from that perspective answering the Essential Question Was the industrial revolution more of a blessing or a curse Some people included Karl Marx Adam Smith and child factory workers
Some 11th grade US students had a student-led Socratic Seminar about the Essential
Question Was the Civil War inevitable Students also discussed the issue of whether Lincoln really deserves the title of Great Emancipator
12th Grade Participation in Government students recently wrote and delivered Soapbox Speeches
on issues in society that they would like to change This project is a collaboration with Civics for All program of the Dept of Education Students choose topics such as immigration teen depression animal abuse LGBTQ+ discrimination sexual harassment and standardized testing Six students were chosen to deliver their speeches in a city-wide event at the New York Historical Society

As part of the DOErsquos College Application Week CDI hosted several events to encourage seniors to apply to
colleges learn about alternatives complete their lists and meet with college representatives The largest
event was iApplied Over 60 students completed their CUNY application with a total of 150 students
completing applications that week Volunteers signed up to assist with the workshops students celebrated
by taking photos at the iApplied photo booth and raffles and t-shirts were given out It was a great event

Instruction and Student Support Office of Safety and Youth Development (LGBTQ Programs) and Includenyc
Join us to learn about the unique concerns and opportunities of siblings of individuals
with disabilities and how to support them through Sibshops and other strategies
Sibshops are fun supportive events for siblings the family members who share the
longest-lasting relationship with a person who has a disability Sibshops provide
children with opportunities to obtain peer support and make connections while
sharing the delights and challenges faced by having a sibling with special needs
Those who are interested in becoming certified Sibshop Facilitators are
professionals and parents educators service providers adult siblings and anyone
who would like to learn more about life as a sib
Participants attending the training will learn how to organize a Sibshop andexperience
one firsthand Sibshop Facilitator Certification Training
bull Friday April 3 ndash 900 am to 330 pm (Light refreshments will be provided)

Instruction and Student Support Office of Safety and Youth Development (LGBTQ Programs) and Includenyc
Join us to learn about the unique concerns and opportunities of siblings of individuals
with disabilities and how to support them through Sibshops and other strategies
Sibshops are fun supportive events for siblings the family members who share the
longest-lasting relationship with a person who has a disability Sibshops provide
children with opportunities to obtain peer support and make connections while
sharing the delights and challenges faced by having a sibling with special needs
Those who are interested in becoming certified Sibshop Facilitators are
professionals and parents educators service providers adult siblings and anyone
who would like to learn more about life as a sib
Participants attending the training will learn how to organize a Sibshop andexperience
one firsthand Sibshop Facilitator Certification Training
bull Friday April 3 ndash 900 am to 330 pm (Light refreshments will be provided)
bull Saturday April 4 - 900 am to 300 pm (Light refreshments will be provided)
Note Must attend both days for certification If interested in sibling issues but not
necessarily interested in how to run a Sibshop you can attend just the first day of the
two-day training

9th grade Global students just conducted a Book Fair where they presented a non-fiction book
from their classroom libraries that they read independently Some books students read Night by Eli Wiesel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi and The Reason I Jump by Naoki Higashida
10th grade Global students just studied the Industrial Revolution and had a Tea Party where each
student played the role of an historical character and had conversations from that perspective answering the Essential Question Was the industrial revolution more of a blessing or a curse Some people included Karl Marx Adam Smith and child factory workers
Some 11th grade US students had a student-led Socratic Seminar about the Essential
Question Was the Civil War inevitable Students also discussed the issue of whether Lincoln really deserves the title of Great Emancipator
12th Grade Participation in Government students recently wrote and delivered Soapbox Speeches
on issues in society that they would like to change This project is a collaboration with Civics for All program of the Dept of Education Students choose topics such as immigration teen depression animal abuse LGBTQ+ discrimination sexual harassment and standardized testing Six students were chosen to deliver their speeches in a city-wide event at the New York Historical Society

As part of the DOErsquos College Application Week CDI hosted several events to encourage seniors to apply to
colleges learn about alternatives complete their lists and meet with college representatives The largest
event was iApplied Over 60 students completed their CUNY application with a total of 150 students
completing applications that week Volunteers signed up to assist with the workshops students celebrated
by taking photos at the iApplied photo booth and raffles and t-shirts were given out It was a great event

iApplied
As part of the DOErsquos College Application Week CDI hosted several events to encourage seniors to apply to
colleges learn about alternatives complete their lists and meet with college representatives The largest
event was iApplied Over 60 students completed their CUNY application with a total of 150 students
completing applications that week Volunteers signed up to assist with the workshops students celebrated
by taking photos at the iApplied photo booth and raffles and t-shirts were given out It was a great event
