The Christmas season pro- vides us with a wonderful opportunity to teach our children and remind our- selves about the blessings that we enjoy that can be shared with others. This year at Christmas the CCUMCP family will join together to donate non- perishable food and other items to Shepherds Table. Shepherds Table, in Silver Spring, has provided an evening meal to those in need for the past 30 plus years and also provides other basic services for the needy. Please bring into the class- room any non-perishable pantry items that you would like to contribute by the day that your child has chapel. Preferred items that are always in need are listed as follows: pepper, salad dressing, hot sauce (an item their guests love), canned vegetables (large #10 cans), soup (cream- based or broth), spices, coffee, creamer, Sweet-N- Low or other sugar substi- tutes, aluminum foil (large industrial roll), Saran Wrap, paper napkins, Tide laun- dry detergent (powder), and metal silverware (spoons and forks). The children will bring those items to the sanctu- ary for the chapel service on Tuesday, December 13 and Wednesday, Decem- ber 14. Talk to your child about this effort and allow him/her to pick out something from the list at the grocery store. Each classroom will collect their items and bring them to the chapel for our Christ- mas service on Tuesday, December 13 and Wednesday, December 14. Once gathered they will be delivered to Shepherds Table for distribution. Please involve your child in the process. Thank you so much for your help in this important effort. Our virtue for the month of December is compassion. That is a big word for little children to take on. How could we talk to them about it? We are asking the chil- dren what and whom they care about. Then we ask how that care translates into action. For example, my kids often show real com- passion for the people who stand in the medians of ma- jor roads begging for money. Their compassion is demon- strated by giving some of their change to these people (or asking me to do so.) Once your child understands what compassion is, ask them to demonstrate their compassion. You might start with something close to home. Have them show compassion for a sibling by giving him/her a hug when he/she is sad. We would love to hear from you or your children about the ways that they show compassion for others. The Christmas season pro-

much for your help in this

important effort.

Our virtue for the month of

December is compassion.

That is a big word for little

they show compassion for

Available Classes at CCUMCP for 2017-18 Registration for Fall 2017

Yikes! Registration time is almost upon us yet again. Some of you may have questions about how many days would be appropriate for your child or whether your child is ready for kindergarten next year. This is the time to ask those questions of your child’s teacher and the director. Please be aware that we will have a few more Open Houses on Wednesday, January 11 and Thursday, January 19 each at 9:30 a.m. if you should desire to see other teachers and their classes in action. Also, if you have friends who are interested in having their children here next year, this is a good opportunity for them to see our school as well. Registration for our current students will take place at the end of January (see the dates on the front of this newsletter). Please note that registration for rising 3 year olds (Jan 24) and any siblings (Jan 26) is done in person in the preschool office. The rising 3 year olds takes place beginning at 8am and the siblings at 8:30am on their respective day. Registration is done on a first come, first served basis. So, if it matters whether your 3 year old attends 3 days or 5 days then be mindful of lining up in a timely manner. The same goes for sibling and alumni registration. The lottery for community members will take place on February 7. If you know that you will not be returning to CCUMCP next year, we would appreciate knowing that as well.

Do you need extra time? Is your child 3 and potty trained yet?

. CCUMC in Partnership with A Wider Circle Angel Tree Christmas Gift Program and

Fundraising Campaign to Furnish 20 Homes Again this holiday season, CCUMC has partnered with A Wider Circle to help poverty-level families in our community have a holiday with joy and dignity. CCUMC invites you to join in these efforts. There are two opportunities to be involved. Angel Tree Christmas Wishes: CCUMC is helping to fulfill the Christmas wishes of several lo-cal families. A Christmas tree has been set up in the Wesley Room where you will find “ornaments” listing a recipient (there are both adults and children) and his or her holiday gift wishes. All are invited to take one or more ornaments to purchase and donate gifts to these persons through the church. If you take an ornament, you must find the name of the person on the sign-up sheet next to the tree and write in your name and email/telephone number. Please note that all gifts must be wrapped and tagged with the recipient’s name and returned to the church office or placed under the Wesley Room tree by Sunday, December 18th at 10:30 am. Fundraising Campaign to Furnish Homes: In addition to fulfilling Christmas wishes, CCUMC has launched a campaign to raise $8,000 to enable A Wider Circle to furnish 20 homes with furniture and basic household items for individuals transitioning out of homeless-ness. Please consider making a donation toward this important effort. Checks should be made out to CCUMC with “AWC donation” in the memo line. Please place your check in the mail slot of the door to the Church Office. As so many of us enjoy a bountiful holiday season, please help make our neighbors’ Christmas wishes and needs come true! For any questions, please contact Paul Tiao at [email protected] or 202 809 6796, or George Ryan Holton at

[email protected] or 202 658-8941.

December book suggestions:

Snowmen at Night : This cute book explains to children why their snow-

men may start to droop. Instead of being due to the snow melting, it is because

the snowmen have been having so much fun at night after we all go to sleep.

A Wish to Be a Christmas Tree: A tree laments that he has not been chosen by

a family, but then finds joy in serving as a special tree for the animals of the for-

est. Coolest anthropomorphizing of a tree ever.

Sumi’s First Day of School Ever. When Sumi starts a new school without being

able to speak any English and has a hard time, one of her classmates shows

compassion by reaching out to her and welcoming her.

Eight Candles to Light: A Chanukah Story: This is a great introduction to the

holiday for young children.

Nativity (Nativity Lift-the-Flap): This Usborne book is perfect for your 18 month

old child and up. It allows him/her to participate in the story and find delightful

pieces of the nativity story.

The Berenstein Bears and the Joy of Giving: If your child is talking a little too

much about what he/she wants for Christmas, then this is the book for him/her.

Thank you so much for

generously providing

new pajamas for needy

families. We collected

148 pairs of pajamas

all of which will be de-

livered locally to those

who are in need.

Pajama Drive Results Snow Policy Explained

Snow is coming though

I’m not sure how soon.

This prompts me to re-

mind you about our snow

policy. We will be closed

due to snowfall if MCPS

schools are closed. If

MCPS has a two-hour

delay, we will have a one-

hour delay (i.e., we will

open at 10:00am).

MCPS delay or closure

information can be found

on the major television

networks as well as on

WTOP (103.5) FM. In

addition, you may find out

what we are doing by

calling the preschool

(301.652.7660)after

7:30am. My outgoing mes-

sage will reflect what is hap-

pening that day. If possible, I

also email the entire school

community. Sometimes,

though, that is not possible so

make sure to check the out-

going phone message at

school.

On one-hour delay days we

will have Early Bird in Mrs.

Hamilton’s room beginning at

9:30am. The first twelve chil-

dren will be accepted that

morning. Should you need it,

please text me that morning

(239.595.6592).

December Outings in Montgomery County

December is a really busy month for everyone between Hannukah and Christmas. Here are a few suggestions of

places to visit to get the spirit of the season

1. Festival of Lights at Washington D.C. Mormon Temple Visitors’ Center (9900 Stoneybrook Drive, Kensing-

ton)—Located just a stone’s throw from the preschool (and down the street from my house), the Temple pro-

vides you with a colorful light display AND an exhibit of crèches from around the world. This free event hap-

pens now through January 1st from 6-10:30pm each evening.

2. Gaithersburg Winter Lights Festival (Seneca Creek State Park)—Want to take in some beautiful lights and ani-

mated vignettes? Take a little drive to Gaithersburg between now and New Year’s Eve. Lights begin at 6pm

each night. There is a small charge per vehicle.

3. Brookside Garden of Lights and Model Trains (1800 Glenallan Ave, Wheaton, MD 20902)—Ever wanted to see

what 1 million lights looks like? Head over to Brookside Gardens to experience that. If you have a train lover in

your midst, then this is also the place for you. The Conservatory there boasts many displays of model trains.

Stop by the Visitors’ Center for some hot cocoa and a nightly musical performance as well. Check out their

website for more information about costs and times of performances.

4. Cabin John Mall (11325 Seven Locks Road, Rockville, MD 20854)—If your child doesn’t attend school on Fri-

days, stop by there on Friday, December 16 for the free children’s concert with Tracey Eldridge from 10:30-

11:15am. Let me know how it is so I’ll know whether Tracey, a local children’s musician, is someone we should

bring to the preschool.

5. Holley Trolley Fest (1313 Bonifant Road, Silver Springs, MD 20905)—Holly TrolleyFest features Santa aboard

street car rides and toy trains in Santa’s Garden. Each weekend before Christmas, Santa boards each street

car trip and visits with children during their ride through Northwest Branch Park. Throughout December, visitors

may enjoy Santa’s Garden in the Museum’s auditorium, tour Street Car Hall with a docent, learn about the role

of street cars in developing communities, and see the antics of Harold Lloyd in silent film comedies featuring

street cars. Cost for adults is $7 and for children & seniors $5

Why Free Play?

A visitor to the preschool re-

cently asked me why we

have an extended period of

free play in the two year old

classroom each day. I ex-

plained that in each of our

classrooms we offer an ex-

tended period of free play for

several reasons.

1. Having a free play period

allows the teacher time to

work in small groups or

one-on-one with children.

2. That time is a wonderful

time for teachers to ob-

serve how children con-

duct themselves inde-

pendently. Do they wan-

der aimlessly around the

room? Do they change

activities every 2 minutes or

can they sustain play for a

length of time? Which other

children does that children

gravitate towards?

3. It allows children the time to

explore interests in a deeper

way. If a child is interested

in trucks she might just roll

them across the room, but

given extended time she

might use the blocks to build

a road for the truck. This

might involve cooperation

with other classmates and

problem solving and think-

ing skills about how to ac-

complish that task. In other

words, the play becomes

much more involved and

helps children bring their

imagination to life.

4. Young children often

have extended periods of

one-on-one with an adult

while at home especially

in situations where they

have a caregiver. This is

wonderful for them, but it

may mean that they rare-

ly need to entertain them-

selves or be self-directed.

Free choice time helps

them to develop those

important skills.

So when we look around a

classroom during free play

there is so much more going

on than meets the eye. Come

see for yourself.
