5 Pillars of Islam

Do you know what a pillar is?

A pillar is a tall structure that that holds a building up and stops the building from

falling down.

There are five pillars of

Islam. They are:

1. Shahadah

2. Salah

3. Zakah

4. Sawm

5. Hajj

Think of Islam as a building. To make sure the building doesn’t

fall down on its own or by bad weather it has walls that hold it

up. The stronger the walls are the harder it will be to make the

building fall. Some buildings need pillars to hold them up.

Without the pillars the buildings are too weak and would easily

collapse.

Like a building, Islam has pillars that hold it up and keep it strong. A person’s Islam is

stronger when they keep their 5 pillars of Islam strong.

Shahadah

Shahadah is to say and believe that there is only one Allah and our Beloved

Messenger Muhammad (SAW) is Allah’s servent and messenger.

The words of shahadah in Arabic are the 2nd kalimah:

the booklet

To make our 5 pillars of Islam stronger we first need to understand what they are.

Translation:

I bear witness that there is no God but Allah

and I bear witness that Muhammad (SAW) is

His servant and messenger.

Salah

Salah is to pray namaz 5 times a day. The 5 salahs are:

1) Fajr

2) Zohar

3) Asr

4) Maghrb

5) Isha

Here is a poem to help you learn when each salah is prayed:

Fajr in the morning

Zuhr after midday

Asr in the afternoon

Maghrib when the sun goes down

Isha before we sleep

Zakah

Zakah means “giving money in charity”.

Allah has told us to give a little bit of money to the needy people once a year.

By giving charity we learn to care and look after the needy people. We also learn to

be grateful for what we have.

Draw and design your own musalla (prayer mat). Make

sure to not draw anything with eyes.

Sawm

Sawm is fasting. Is it the 4th pillar of Islam.

In the month of Ramadan, we stay away from eating, drinking and doing bad things

because Allah has told us to. Allah wants to see if we listen to Him and stay away

from eating, drinking and doing bad things in Ramadan.

Fasting teaches us to be grateful for the food and drink Allah gives us. We also learn

to be patient.

Hajj

The last pillar of Islam is Hajj.

A muslim has to go to the blessed city of Makkah to do Hajj once in their life if they

can afford the journey and is healthy enough to travel.

Hajj can only be performed on specific days which are from the 8th Dhul Hijjah till 12th

Dhul Hijjah (this is the 12th month of Islamic calendar). There are certain actions that

a person has to do on each day.

Befor or after Hajj most muslims choose to go to Madinah Munawwarah to visit the

blessed city of our Messenger Muhammad (SAW). This is known as Ziyarah, but

remember this is not part of the hajj.

A practical activity to help understand what pillars are:

1. Colour in 5 empty tissue rolls

2. Label each one with one of the pillars of Islam

3. Stick them diagonally on a paper and draw a roof to show the

pillars holding the roof up or use an empty kitchen roll as a roof

Please go through each pillar with your child as they may need further

explanation or pictures to help assist them in understanding

If your child wishes to make a charity box, a template to make a box is
