Amount of Time Homework is assigned as a reinforcement of the learning at school. It is designed to be a means of review and of comprehension and enrichment of the subject matter. Ordinarily homework is not given on weekends. The approximate times students are expected to spend on homework are: Grade 4 30 to 45 minutes Grade 5 40 to 55 minutes Grade 6 45 to 60 minutes Absence of Child Ifaparentrequestshomeworkforanabsentchild,itmustbedonebyphoneornotebefore12noon.Theteachershouldsendthehomeworktotheofficeby2:30p.m.forparentstopickitupfromtheschoolofficebetween2:30and3:30. Homework – Vacations Vacations are discouraged during the school year and should be planned during scheduled breaks. Instruction time in the classroom is important and cannot be made up. In addition, a teacher’s plan may change from day to day. Therefore, no school work will be given by teachers to vacationing students. It is the parents’/students’ responsibility to see that work is made up after returning to school. The curriculum promotes the dignity of the human person, personal safety, and the moral teachings of the Catholic Church. The four goals are:

1. Recognize and appropriately respond to the lures of sexual predators: 2. Discuss, demonstrate, and esamine behaviors that promote a safe lifestyle; 3. Recognize and respond appropriately to behaviors disrespectful to mind and/or

body; and 4. Examine and evlauate proper conduct in the midst of todays’ societal pressures.

Parents who desire to teach a particular objective at home and withold their child’s participation at school, must notify the school in writing, that they “opt out” of the program. Meningococcal Disease Indiana law requires parents/guardians be informed about meningococcal disease and its vaccine. This disease can progress rapidly and within hours of the first symptons, may result in death or permanent disability including loss of hearing, bran damage, and limb amputations. Symptoms of meningococcla disease often resemble the flue and can include a feber, headache, nausea and stiff neck, making the disease difficult to diagnose. The bacteria is transmitted through air droplets and by direct contact with an infected person. Fortunately there is an immunizations available and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends routine immunizations at 11 to 12 years old. For information refer to Indiana State Department of Health. http://www.in.gov/isdh/healthinfor/minimgococcal%20disease.htm. Student Athletic Activities

Attitude All those involved in extracurricular activities, athletics or any other school related functions, are to conduct themselves in a Christian manner which reflects the

Page 27: Parent and Student Handbook · Parent and Student Handbook Lafayette Catholic Schools Mission Statement Our Mission is to serve God by providing a challenging academic education integrated

27

beliefs and values of a Catholic school. Academics and Conduct Boys and girls have the opportunity to participate in sports. Students who wish to participate in these activities must meet scholastic and behavior standards. To be eligible, a student must maintain a “C” grade in every academic subject: Math, Science, Reading, English, Social Studies, Spelling, and Religion. If a student is working up to his/her potential and does not have a “C” grade in every academic subject, special consideration will be given this student at the discretion of the teacher and principal. If a student receives a grade lower than “C” in conduct or effort, the student is ineligible. When a student is ineligible, he/she will not attend or participate in games and practices for one week extending from Monday to Sunday. After one week, the student’s eligibility will be evaluated. The principal will notify the student, parents, and athletic director by means of an Ineligibility Form. The athletic director in turn will notify the coaches involved. Athletics Uniforms All uniforms must be returned to the coach at the end of the season. Report cards will be withheld until the sport uniform is returned or paid for. Greater Lafayette Area Special Services CONSULTATION WITH PRIVATE SCHOOLS Child Find – A parent of a nonpublic school student suspected of having a disability may request an educational evaluation from GLASS. He/she can do this by talking to the principal of the private school where the student attends.

a. GLASS Public School Psychologist provides consultation to parents, teachers, and principals of private school about educational interventions to consider and try.

b. If parent permission is obtained by the GLASS psychologist, an educational evaluaion will take place.

c. Parents, school teachers/administrators will be infomred of this Child Find process in the beginning of each year via written information. Such written information will be provided to the private school principals to include in the information packets for the students and parents. Documentation that such information has been provided to parents via this process will be obtained by GLASS from the public school. Such documentation will be on file within the GLASS office.

Parent Organizations

Parent-Teacher Organization PTO is an organization for the teachers and parents of students attending the Lafayette Catholic Elementary Schools. This organization meets throughout the school year and sponsors social and fundraising events. Volunteers St. Boniface School relies on parent volunteers to help with various activities and field trips. A form is sent home on the first day of school with a list of volunteer opportunities. The staff refers to this list often during the year. A phone call to volunteer is also appropriate any time during the academic year.

Amendments to the Handbook

The principal retains the right to amend the handbook for just cause, and parents will be given prompt written notification if changes are made.

Agreement Signed by Parents/Guardians Parents are requested to sign a statement indicating that they have read and agree to be governed by this handbook. This statement can be found attached to this handbook which is to be signed and returned to school three days after receiving the handbook.
