Dear Families and Staff:
We are pleased to announce that we will be getting two playgrounds that we have anxiously
awaited for quite some time now. Within the next few months, construction of our
layground will begin on campus. We have established procedures to keep our childrenp
and staff safe and have been communicating with the contractors.
The playgrounds that we will be receiving are the result of a successful partnership
between the Department of Education, Department of Public Safety Hawaii Correctional
Industries, and private playground contractors throughout the State that was initiated two
years ago. So far, approximately forty playgrounds have been installed. Through this
artnership, the DOE is able to provide safe quality playground equipment that providesp
more play value for children.
This particular partnership to install our new playgrounds will involve between two to four
supervised inmates who will be provided the opportunity to acquire skills by shadowing
and assisting the hired contractor and his employees for a few days. These inmates are the
ame ones that you see on the highways cutting grass, in schools delivering refurbisheds
furniture, or in communities performing various jobs.
The community status based inmate work line that will be participating are the lowest level
risk within the institutional system and have anywhere from days to months left before
being released back into the community. Please be advised that sexual or violent offenders
are not allowed on this project or any other project that Hawaii Correctional Industries
participates in. Inmate work line activity will be restricted to the construction site and an
experienced unarmed supervisor will be present at all times. Inmates will also be easily
identified by the brown shirt and blue pant uniform. We ask you to refrain from talking to
nmates, as they need to adhere to the rules and not engage or participate in conversationsi
with outsiders.
We thank you for your patience and understanding as we await our new playgrounds.hould you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 6891380 ext.
