The opening of the ceremony was a tribute to the Paralympic Athletes and the

ceremony started with a short speech of the author of “A brief history of time”,

about the origins of the universe, before some spectacular fireworks to simulate a “Big Bang” theory formulated by Albert

Einstein and developed by Hawking.

A quarter of an hour after that begins the show the Queen Elizabeth II came to the venue with his sons Eduardo and Ana, the Dukes of Cambridge, William and Catherine, and the President of the International Paralympic Committee, Philip Craven to the official inauguration of this games.

Let the Paralympic Games begins!!!It’s a big event that makes the world be connected by the passion of sports. This event involves athletes with a range of physical and intellectual disabilities. This massive event is organized by the IPC (International Paralympic Committee). The IPC is the global governing body that organizes the Paralympics. They have their own purpose: “It’s to organize the summer and winter Paralympic Games and act as the International Federation for nine sports, supervising and coordinating World Championships and other competitions.”We also found the vision of this organization: “To enable Paralympic athletes to achieve sporting excellence and inspire and excite the world.”

The IPC wants to mark the Paralympic Values:For the IPC is very important to promote some values because you can mark a person

Courage: It encompasses the unique spirit of the

Page 7: PARALYMPIC CHRONICLE

Paralympic athlete who seeks to accomplish what the general public deems unexpected, but what the athlete knows as a truth.

Determination: The manifestation of the idea that Paralympic athletes push their physical ability to the absolute limit.

Inspiration: When intense and personal affection is begotten from the stories and accomplishments of Paralympic athletes, and the effect is applying this spirit to one's personal life.

Equality: Paralympic Sport acts as an agent for change to break down social barriers of discrimination for persons with a disability.

Did you know…?

The first sport clubs for the deaf were in existence in 1888 in Berlin.

The first Paralympic Games were held in Rome, Italy in 1960 and featured 400 athletes from 23 countries. In 1976 Örnsköldsvik, Sweden staged the first Paralympic Winter Games.

These Games are now the second biggest sporting event in the world.

“Looking up to this special heroes”ince we’ve known for thousands of years, every sport’s world competition such as the Olympics and Paralympics Games have been successfully acknowledged throughout

the entirely world by simply applying all the fantastic athletes’ abilities and by remembering those unforgettable exploits reached by those marvelous sport items.

SAll people around the world seldom hold an absolutely awesome feeling towards people with disabilities because society has set up and enforced this meaningless stereotype ever created that lays down that Paralympic Games don’t have relevance and aren’t seen by the whole world TV audience as the Olympic Games. Therefore, these worst ideals come across from racist and inhuman minds whose principal purpose is to come up with “sociocentrism” [one group’s (nation, community, etc.) superiority belief above all groups]. However, athletes with disabilities always show off their effort, sacrifice and perseverance to spectators and as long as these values and principles start clearing out human minds, society would probably get rid of those unfair thoughts.

Around 167 countries during the Paralympic Games fought for their objectives to be rewarded by receiving three types of medals: gold, silver and bronze. These athletes have to be considered as national heroes by their own countries because only by making a great effort in every single discipline, they’re teaching us that within their limitations and physical hassles, all human being is able and allowed to break down all hard times to make them possible.

TOGETHER WE OUGHT TO PREVAIL EQUALITY AS AWAY TO AVOID SELFISH, MEANINGLESS AND HARMFUL STEREOTYPES.

Being yourself, without being afraid of being in the right or wrong, it’s more admirable than choosing the worst option which is giving up to the conformity. (Irving Wallace)

Page 10: PARALYMPIC CHRONICLE

Consequently, there are 21 disciplines that must be fulfilled and achieved. Each discipline has a different kind of disability, so these special heroes are going to develop more efficiently their strengths in order to meet the success. For those who would like to know what disciplines were executed, we’ll point out all of them: Archery, Athletics, Boccia, Cycling Road, Cycling Track, Equestrian, Football 5-a-side, Football 7-a-side, Goal ball, Judo, Powerlifting, Rowing, Sailing, Shooting, Swimming, Table tennis, Sitting Volleyball, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Fencing, Wheelchair Rugby and Wheelchair Tennis.

The most interesting disciplines during this exciting tournament are:

*Athletics: Speed, strength, power and stamina will be on display during the Athletics competition. The largest sport at the Paralympic Games. 1,100 athletes compete for 170 gold medals across track, field and road events. Some athletes compete in wheelchairs or throwing frames, others with prostheses, and others with the guidance of a sighted companion.

*Football 7-a-side: is a fast-moving and fiercely competitive sport played by athletes with cerebral palsy. At London 2012, the Riverbank Arena will host eight men’s teams in a 20-match tournament, culminating in the gold medal match on 9 September.

*Swimming: With the second largest number of athletes and events at the Games, Swimming is one of the most popular Paralympic sports.

*Sitting Volleyball: Ten teams compete in the men’s and eight teams in the women’s competitions, with 11 athletes on each team (six players and five substitutes).Sitting Volleyball there are two categories of classification: disabled and minimal disability. A maximum of one minimally disabled player may be on the court for each team at any one time.

That’s the real pride for a nation’s self-esteem, till everybody’s self-esteem improves, there will be scarce beliefs about conformity and perseverance will prevail under our skins and minds.

Believe in yourself.

At this section many athletes tell us how they achieve their goals by believing in themselves and how nothing is impossible. They aren’t just athletes but also heroes.

The First one is Sebastian Iwanow, he is from Germany and he thinks that the most important thing when you practice a sport is to have fun and being concentrate in your goals. He is a swimmer and at that sport he feels that he have the opportunity to get the maximum out

of him and to be competitive with other athletes.

Page 12: PARALYMPIC CHRONICLE

The second one is Jefferson da Conceição Gonçalves, he plays in the Brazil’s football team and for him the most important thing is to represent his country and return to Brazil victorious. Playing football is his childhood dream and it gives him happiness, health, culture and knowledge. He said that people need to follow their heart and dreams, ignoring all the difficulties that come along and always keep heading forward. To close he said that we never have to dive up and to always do our best.

The last of our heroes is Bridie Kean, she practices wheelchair basketball at -----, this sport for her requires physical condition, mental strength and the most important is the teamwork. She think that the most important to be successful is to first fail and learn and also that sport is life, the more you work on something, the better you become. People need to work smart and hard, be focused and enjoy the improvement: regardless of big or small.

accomplish what you care about”.

Maria de los Angeles Ortiz is another example of character strength. She had face to many things in her life. Seven years ago she was Seven years ago, she was hit by a speeding car, whose driver was drunk. This accident made that she lost her left leg. Not only had that come to change her life, because that year was diagnosed with cancer. We also had to face the recent death of his father.
