Paradip Port is the only Major Port in the State of Orissa situated 210 nautical miles south of Kolkata and 260 nautical miles north of Visakhapatnam.

rdThe foundation stone for the Port was laid by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 3 January, 1962.stGovernment of India took over the management of the Port from the Government of Orissa on 1 June, 1965.

FIRST MAJOR PORT in the East Coast commissioned after independence.

Paradip Port is strategically situated so as to serve a vast hinterland spreading over the states of Orissa, Jharkhand, Chhatisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. Paradip Port enjoys the advantages of soft underwater soil, so that it can be deepened to any depth depending upon the need.

At present Paradip Port is handling various cargoes like iron ore, thermal coal, coking coal, chrome ore, manganese ore, charge chrome, ferro chrome, ferro manganese, limestone, hard coke, ingots and moulds, billets, finished steel, scarp, fertilizer, clinker, gypsum, project cargo and containers.

The port is now equipped with fourteen berths, one single point mooring, one Ro-Ro Jetty, one turning circle commonly known as Turning basin with 250 meters diameter, well maintained Approach Channel and Entrance channel having draught of 15 meters and 13 meters respectively.

Paradip Port has its own Railway System having a route length of about 10 Kms and track length of 82 kilometers with 25 full length railway sidings to handle rail-borne traffic efficiently.

Paradip Port has excellent facilities of handling variety of cargoes with modern cargo handling equipments, bagging and stitching plants, adequate back up spaced and storage facilities.

Paradip is a customer friendly ISO-9001-2000 certified and ISPS complied port rendering satisfactory services to the importers and exporters. The berthing policy of the port is first come first serve.

The port functions round the clock, 365 days. The port is adequately guarded by 500 Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

The port has a state of the art Mechanized Coal handling Plant to handle coal traffic for coastal shipment. The plant is designed to handle 20 million tons per annum equipped with Stackers, Reclaimers, Conveyors and Ship loaders of 4000 TPH capacity with mechanized unloading facility from BOBR wagons on a Merry-Go-Round system.

TRAFFICThere has been unprecedented growth of traffic at

Paradip Port in recent years. As can be seen in the graph

below, the traffic has doubled in the last six years from

25.31 milion tones in the year 2003-04 to 57.01 million tones

during the year 2009-10.

PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS

During the year 2009-10 despite global slow down and

reduction of exports and imports in the world market, the

port recorded a growth of 22.84 % over the previous year.

1. One berth of 160 meters has been constructed and put to use

for berthing of IOCL vessels for the use of their Refinery Project.

Another berth of 108 meters for berthing of Coast Guard

Vessels has been commissioned in view of increased security

measures taken up by the Coast Guard.

2. A dry dock of dimension 75 meters length, 15 meters width

and 11 meters depth has been constructed and

commissioned at Paradip to facilitate repair of all port crafts

and also vessels of others.

3. Three 1350 BHP locomotives have been procured and added

to the existing 07 nos. of locomotives to strengthen the working

of Port Railway system.

4. To increase the output at the Mechanized Iron Ore Handling

Plant, one stacker-cum-reclaimer has been commissioned on

19.12.2008. th5. A Single Point Mooring was commissioned on 28 December

2008 at Paradip for handling Very Large Crude Carriers

(VLCCs) of IOCL.

6. With a view to strengthen the Security System at the Port, Port

has installed CCTV Security Surveillance System which functions

round the clock and enhanced the security measures.

7. With a view to simplify transactions between Port and Port users,

Paradip Port introduced Electronic Data Interchange system.

Web based messages are being exchanged with users through

the “Port Community System”.

Port is in the process of modernizing and mechanizing all the

existing berths in a phased manner. During the year 2009-10

the operations at the following two berths were mechanized.

CONNECTIVITY PROJECT

FOUR LANING OF CHANDIKHOLE - PARADIP NH 5 AThe 4-laning of the road from Chandikhole to Paradip (NH-5 A)

executed by NHAI at an estimated cost of Rs. 442.00 crores has

been completed in the month of December, 2009, for this project

PPT has contributed equity of Rs. 40.00 crores.

1. Deepening of Channel:

Paradip port is undertaking the work of “Deepening of

Channel” at a cost of Rs.253.36 crores. The work has been

awarded to Dredging Corporation of India who has

commenced the work in June 2008 and is in progress. After

deepening of channel, port will be in a position to handle cape

size vessels (i.e. upto 1, 25,000 DWT). On completion of the

project, the depth of the entrance channel and approach

channel will be increased from 13.00 mtrs to 17.00 mtrs and

15.00 mtrs to 18.70 mtrs respectively. The likely date of

completion of the project is June 2010.

2. Construction of New Berths:

a) Development of a new deep draught Iron ore berth on BOT

basis through PPP mode to handle 10 MTPA of Iron Ore for

export has been taken up. The Concession agreement for this stproject has been signed on 01 July, 2009 and the construction

work will commence soon.

b) Development of a new deep draught coal berth on BOT basis

through PPP model to handle 10 MTPA of imported coking

coal / thermal coal has been taken up. The Concession thagreement for this project has been signed on 10 November,

2009 and the construction work will commence soon.

3. Mechanisation and Modernisation of the berths:

a) To increase the output at the Mechanized Iron Ore Handling

Plant, Commissioning of two no. of Reclaimers of 3000 TPH

Capacities is under progress and is likely to be commissioned

by 2012.

b) To increase the output, mechanization of the CQ-3 berth has

been taken up. The LOI has been issued on 11.03.2010. The

project is likely to be completed in March, 2011 and will add 4

MTPA to the existing Port capacity.

CONNECTIVITY PROJECT

New Railway Line between Haridaspur-Paradip.Paradip Port has 10% equity in this project being executed by RVNL. The other companies having share in this

project are Orissa Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO), Essel Mining & Industries Ltd.,

Rungta Mines Ltd., Jindal Steel and Power Ltd., Steel Authority of India Ltd., POSCO India Ltd., MSPL Ltd. On

completion of the project, there will be considerable reduction of the distance from Bansapani to Paradip and

the freight will be reduced by 50%. The work has already started and expected to be completed by June 2011.

1. Construction of one multipurpose berth on BOT basis through

PPP Mode to handle containers and other clean cargoes. This

facility will add about 5 MTPA to the present capacity of the

Port. The RFQ stage is over and price bids from the short listed

bidders have been called for and will be opened on

30/04/2010. The likely date of completion of the project is

March 2012.

2. A proposal has been initiated to construct one Oil berth with a

capacity of 10 MTPA at an estimated cost of Rs. 172.97 crores.

The detailed engineering work is under progress. The tender

notification will be issued soon. The likely date of completion of

the project is March 2012.

nd3. 2 Single Point Mooring in association with

IOC will be set up at Paradip for handling of

their Very Large Crude Carriers [VLCCs] by

March, 2012. This will add about 15 Million

tons of cargo to the present volume.

4. Paradip Port has initiated the project

“Construction of an Island Breakwater”

with berthing facilities on the lee side of the

breakwater. For this, preparation of DPR,

EIA study and detailed engineering work is

under tendering stage. The estimated cost

of the project is Rs. 800 Crores.

5. Paradip Port has initiated the project “Construction of Western

Dock System” for construction of 6 nos. of berths. Preparation

of DPR, EIA study and detailed engineering work is under

progress. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 2000 Crores.

On Completion of all these projects, the capacity of the port will

be enhanced to 135 MTPA by 2012-13. The table below shows

capacity addition of the port in phased manner.

a. WATER & POWERParadip Port has developed a water-supply network,

maintains it and ensures regular supply of water to its

employees and general public in the township besides supply

to the ships at berths. Paradip Port draws raw water through

Taladanda Canal, stores it in the three reservoirs, developed

and maintained by the Port and treats before it is supplied to

the consumers. Similarly Port draws power from M/S OPTC and

supplies it to all the colonies and consumers at a prescribed

rate through a power supply net work, developed and

maintained by the Port, apart from street lighting.

b. HEALTHThe Port Trust has a modern 64 bedded hospital with adequate

number of qualified doctors and specialists for treatment of

Port Trust employees and their dependants. Port users,

shipping agents and others based at Paradip Port are also

permitted to use the hospital facilities. The Hospital is an ISO

certified and is authorized for bio-medical disposal system.

c. EDUCATIONOne High School and one ME School are run by Paradip port.

One Central School is fully subsidized by the Port Trust and an

English Medium School run by Bethany Convent also operates

at Paradip. Apart from these Saraswati Vidhya Mandir,

Municipal High School, Municipal Girls High School, Sanjay

Gandhi High School, DAV Public School and a number of other

schools are imparting education at Paradip Port. There is one

Port aided School located at “V” Point as K.G. School. A

number of Schools for Dance & Music are also functioning in

the Port town. Paradip Port provides grant of 5.00 lakhs per

annum to Paradip College offering degree course in Arts,

Science as well as Commerce with honours subjects.

d. SANITATIONPort has constructed Sulabha Souchalayas at various

locations, which are maintained daily round the clock, by the

Port through Sulabha International, Orissa. Apart from this, Port

has constructed branch drains and main drains connecting to

the discharge points for discharge of rain water.

e. INTERNAL ROADSThe Port has developed and maintains an excellent road net

work with black topped and concrete roads, inside the

township as well as inside the prohibited area of the Port. The

Port is connected to the nearest railway station-Rangiagarh

with Concrete Road of four kilometers length.

f. ENVIRONMENTThe Port maintains an eco-friendly environment in the port

area. More than eight lakh trees have been planted after

super-cyclone of 1999. One lakh saplings are procured and

planted every year inside the port area and the township.

Besides these various Parks, Gardens, Nurseries have been

developed in and around the township for the benefit of Port

Users, Employees and Public. Avenue plantation is made

alongside the main roads connecting to different colonies of

takes required steps to retain the pollution level within the

permissible limit.

g. HOUSING & RECREATIONHousing facilities are provided to port users/service providers

and state/Central Government employees in addition to the

Port employees. The Port has a good market complex along

with many hotels and restaurants. Besides, the Port Trust has

one eighteen-suit guest house overlooking the sea at sector-

21, which is extensively used by various users of the Port. Port is

well connected to Cuttack and Bhubaneswar with bus & train

services at regular intervals.

h. OTHER FACILITIESThe “Jayadev Sadan”, an auditorium was constructed and

commissioned as Community Centre to cater to the needs of

the Ports as well as port users for staging cultural shows,

conducting seminars and state level workshops. Apart from

Jayadev Sadan, Port has constructed Kalyan Mandap, Eight

nos of Cyclone Shelters, Recreation Centre, Clubs for Officers

& Employees with swimming pools, where port users can also

become members. One Stadium known as Gopabandhu

Stadium has been built with facilities to conduct National as

well as State Level events in games and sports.

The Port has planned to construct one modern auditorium,

two trade centers and one sea-farers Club, which will add further

colour to the Port Township.

The Port comes forward to help the victims of natural

calamities arising out of flood, cyclone, etc. in the nearby areas

and provide necessary assistance to the State Administration. In

the recent past port has rescued sailors and fishermen who were

in distress during bad weather conditions and also successfully

aborted oil spill disaster, thereby saving the marine life.

Off late, this Port has become a place of tourist attraction.

The Mahanadi Confluence Point, gardens, especially “The Smruti

Udyan” fitted with musical fountain, Marine Aquarium, Maritime

Museum, and greenery of the Port attract many visitors.

The Port organizes the Sports and cultural events such as

Raja Mohastava, Kumar Purnima & Bali Yatra, Ratha Yatra,

Biswakarma Puja in the township which attract the nearby locals

in large numbers.

With many new industries coming up in and around Paradip

apart from existing industries of IFFCO, PPL, CARGILL, IOCL,

Paradip Port town is going to become an Industrial Hub in the next

five to ten years. Paradip Port is gearing up to meet the

challenges.
