We are de l ighted to welcome the phenomena l Par ade - to the Communit y Theat re .
Spotlight Theatre Company is affiliated to N.O.D.A. and is supported by Ty Cerdd Music Centre (Welsh Amateur
Music Federation)
The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (N.O.D.A.), founded in 1899 is the main representative body for
amateur theatre in the UK. It has a membership of some 2500 amateur/community theatre groups and 3000
individual enthusiasts throughout the UK, staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and pantomimes in a wide variety of
performing venues, ranging from the country’s leading professional theatres to village halls. Members have access to a
wide range of benefits.
N.O.D.A. aims:
• To give a shared voice to the amateur theatre sector
• To help amateur societies and individuals achieve the highest standards of best practice and performance• To provide leadership and advice to enable amateur theatre to tackle the challenges and opportunities of
the 21st century.
Spotlight’s newest production of the admirably ambitious and daring piece of
musical drama ‘Parade’. Set in the southern state of Atlanta, Georgia, the show
tells the real life story of a Brooklyn Jewish Northerner, Leo Frank, who was
framed for the assault and murder of 13-year-old Mary Phagan, who worked at
the pencil factory where he was superintendent, on Confederate Memorial
Day 1913.
The musical depicts not only the trial, but also dramatizes the love story between
Leo and his wife Lucille and examines historical class, and race relations and the
prejudice of the South. With music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, Parade
holds a rich, riddling mix of military marches, hymns, dances and popular songs
swarming against one another to take you through a cornucopia of emotion.
Thank you for your continuous support without which Spotlight would be unable
to provide you with the standard of entertainment to which you have become
accustomed.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1936, Alfred Fox Uhry,
is a successful American playwright and
screenwriter. Uhry, who graduated from Brown
University, learnt the craft of lyric writing in New
York. Although his early work was somewhat
unsuccessful, he eventually earned a Tony
nomination for The Robber Bridegroom. Uhry’s
work includes what has become known as the
‘Atlanta Trilogy’. The trilogy of plays are set in the
first half of the 20th century and comprise of
Driving Miss Daisy (1987), The Last Night of
Ballyhoo (1996) and Parade (1998) which was the
result of a collaboration with composer, Jason
Robert Brown, and director, Harold Prince. The
libretto for Parade won Uhry a Tony Award for
Best Book of a Musical. In 2006 Alfred Uhry was
the first person to receive an Academy Award,
Tony Award and the Pulitzer Prize for
dramatic writing.
Regarded as one of the ‘New School’ theatrical
composers, Jason Robert Brown (J.R.B.) has an art
for fusing pop-rock styles with theatrical lyrics.
Born in New York in 1970, J.R.B. studied music at
the Eastman School of Music in Rochester and
attended French Woods Festival of the Performing
Arts. Beginning his music career as an arranger,
composer and pianist, he worked in New York on
shows and played in several nightclubs and bars in
the city. His first success was Songs for a New World
(1995) which featured pop-rock influenced music.
This show has since been performed more than
200 times around the world. Parade was his next
venture. The show won J.R.B. a Tony award in 1999
for his score. This musical masterpiece
written with Alfred Uhry and directed by Harold
Prince premiered at the Lincoln Center Theatre in
1998 and won a Drama Desk and New York
Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Musical.
In 2001 J.R.B. was successful with The Last Five
Years which was cited as one of Time Magazine’s
‘10 Best for 2001’. Further success was achieved
with this musical winning J.R.B. Drama Desk
Awards for Best Music and Best Lyrics. His latest
musical 13 has premiered in Los Angeles to rave
reviews. J.R.B is recognised as ‘one of Broadway’s
smartest and most sophisticated songwriters since
Stephen Sondheim’ (Philadelphia Inquirer) and
‘a leading member of a new generation of
composers who embody high hopes for the American
musical’ (The New York Times).

The Company would like to remember Mr Dewi Reynolds who sadly passed away earlier this year. Dewi was a Vice President of
the Company and we are extremely grateful for all the support that he and his wife gave the Company over the years.
The Company would also like to remember Suzanne Rees who passed away recently. Suzanne, who was a leading lady with Selsig
and was well known for her beautiful singing voice, starred as Yum Yum in the Company’s production of Hot Mikado. Suzanne was
a dear friend to many of the Company’s members and will be sadly missed.
