WALTER SCOTT’S
Q: Are Channing Tatum
and Jonah Hill friends
in real life, as their
characters were in
21 Jump Street? —Bradley
Poterfield, Eagan, Minn.
The country star, 35, pulls double duty as a nom-inee (Favorite Country Artist) and performer at the People’s Choice Awards.Q: What’s in store for your performance? I’m not used to playing a lot of black-tie events, but I’m going to get onstage and have fun and bring a country-rock fl air to the show. It’s my fi rst time being nominated, and anything that comes from the fans is extra special.Q: After a diffi cult year personally [the married singer admitted that he “acted inap-propriately” with another woman in a bar],
what has the support of your fans meant to you? I want them to stick with me when things are going great and when they’re not going so great. The fact that they’ve done that is a testament to how amazing country music fans are. That makes me proud.Q: If you weren’t singing, what would you be doing? I’d like to think I’d be playing baseball. I had an opportunity to play baseball in college, but I just didn’t want to go to school. I started focusing on my music and it was game over!Q: Who would be on your ballot for Favorite Country Artist? Luke Bryan is one of my closest friends, and I don’t think anybody has had a bigger year. I’m also a big fan of Eric Church, Miranda Lambert, and Carrie Under-wood. A lot of us hit the scene at the same time, so it’s cool to see your friends doing well.

have sleepovers.”
Q: Is Kaley Cuoco more excited about hosting or being a nomi-nee? —Jill Ward,

A: The Big Bang
Theory star, who is up for Favorite Comedic TV Actress, says that though winning
an award is very important to her,
she’s more focused on her emcee duties, which she perfected at last year’s show. “I’m thrilled to be hosting again,” Cuoco, 27, says. “When they called to ask me back, I thought they had the wrong number! I’m super- fl attered and looking forward to a great show.”

GANGSTER
SQUAD
Brimming with retro style and cool actors, this violent crime story—think L.A.
Confidential meetsThe Untouchables—focuses on a 1949 police unit hand-picked to bring
down a Hollywood mobster (real-life kingpin Mickey Cohen, played by Sean Penn). Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling (above), and Anthony Mackie are among the cops; Emma Stone (above) makes a swell moll who’s working every angle. (R)

The Twelve Tribes of Hattie
An African-American family saga that pulses with life and emotion, Ayana Mathis’s thrilling debut novel (and Oprah book club selection) deals with heartbreak, hope, bigotry, and courage over the course of nearly six decades.
She Matters Susanna Sonnenberg’s book reminds us how profoundly we’re affected by our friend-ships. In each chapter, she explores her bond with a differ-ent woman, from a former camp mate to an intimate ally who dumped her. You’ll want to share this with, yes, a friend.
Too Bright to Hear
Too Loud to See In this searing novel about one man’s battle with bipolar dis-order, Juliann Garey takes us to Hollywood and Thailand, back through childhood trauma, and into a psychiatric ward. It’s strong, riveting stuff, leavened with keen insight and humor.

ver the last two rather extra-ordinary years, at the risk of sounding vain, I have often been asked why I thought Downton
Abbey has been quite such a success. Of course, it is hard to be defi nite about these things. If television were an exact science,
there would be nothing made that did not break records. But supposing I were to put my fi nger on one element, it might be that we have made the decision to treat every character, the members of the family and the members of their staff, equally, in terms of their narrative strength. They all have emotional lives, dreams, ambitions, and disappointments, and with all of them we suggest backstories, many of which are to be found in my own history.
Few people shake off the family infl uences they were born into, and I am not among them. My relations, when I was young, were numerous and omnipresent and, inevita-bly I suppose, they seem now to abandon their graves and settle into the pages of my scripts with increasing regularity. I have spoken before of my impressive, if tyran-nical, great-aunt Isie, who is the principal model for Violet Grantham (and also for Lady Trentham in Gosford Park before that), a woman whose dry wit concealed a good deal of personal suffering and who was no tougher on the rest of us than she was on herself. It is perhaps that draconian sense of personal discipline that makes her breed seem admirable to me.
But my family has contributed the out-line sketches for more than the Dowager. Robert Grantham is defi nitely drawn, in his personality if not his circumstance, from my

too concerned with class, and thereby a snob. There is some truth to the fi rst, since I am fascinated by the shaping effect of the random selection of class, and how, even today, it has a lasting infl uence on our aspirations and prospects. A recent report for the Labour Government con-cluded that birth remained the greatest determinant when
it came to our futures in modern Britain. This seems extraordinary to me, partly because I grew up in the 1960s, a genera-tion that assumed all such stuff was coming to an end, and if you had asked anyone in
1968 how important class would be in 40 years’ time, they would have laughed in your face. But perhaps I have a greater sen-sibility because, to a degree, I was brought up in a class minefi eld. My father’s birth was grander than my mother’s, his relations therefore disapproving of both her family and her, and she was condemned to the unenviable task of making everything in their life seem smooth and seamless when it was in fact riven with stitching. She

dear departed father. In this, I mean to convey that he was a deeply moral man, cleverer possibly than Robert, and, like Robert, he was always deter-mined to do right, but without ever contest-ing the structure of his own social universe. One of my brothers remarked that if Pa had crashed in the desert and somehow found a parking meter buried in the sand, he would be sure to put the correct money into it. This stuff dies hard in us, and not long ago, when I discovered I had taken change for a 20-pound note instead of a tenner from the branch of Tesco in Trafalgar Square, I journeyed across Lon-don the following day to pay back the excess. Rather sadly, the amiable manageress clearly thought I was mad.
I have been accused in the press of being
HIGHS AND LOWS AT DOWNTON ABBEYThe ’20s are a new, brighter decade, but tradition still reigns at the mansion. Left, cast members on the stairs that separate the family’s domain from the staff’s. Center, Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) and Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) on their long-awaited wedding day. “These two are always going to have quite a tempestuous time,” says series cocreator Gareth Neame. Below, prisoner John Bates (Brendan Coyle) reads letters from his beloved wife, Anna.
What’s Mrs. Levinson like? She’s a force for change. She goes to see
the other side of her family and talks about how they got into a world war because
they were addicted to tradition. She tells them they really need to get up to speed on
what’s happening in the world.Do you think there’s still a lot of class
consciousness in England? My relationship with the English is they love my bawdiness, because I cuss in
public. Maybe they like to get away from “appropriate” behavior. I do understand why they had the British class system.
I don’t know which came fi rst, that or the clothes—because you couldn’t get dressed
without a servant. All the buttons! You have a great scene where
you sing “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” to Maggie Smith at a party.
That was my idea, and Julian [Fellowes] went for it. I thought it might be funny and charming—how would this character who doesn’t even know what a weekend is react
to someone singing a love song to her?Was it hard joining Downton’s ensemble? No, they welcomed me in! They wanted to hear stories about the Rat Pack and Billy Wilder and Hitchcock. And they asked,
“Would you sing ‘If My Friends Could See Me Now’ from Sweet Charity?” The thing
that impressed me about the cast—besides their being wonderful actors—was we’d be out in the rain and wind, and they’d do
everything as though there was no weather. And I thought, I’d better do that, too.

Rhode Islander Martha Levinson.

LOVERS AND OTHER STRANGERSAbove, Lady Edith Crawley (Laura Carmichael) pins her romantic hopes on the older, war-injured Sir Anthony Strallan (Robert Bathurst). The family does not approve. Left, youngest sister Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay) and her even more inappropriate husband, chauffeur-turned-revolutionary Tom Branson (Allen Leech), are expecting and living in an increasingly volatile Ireland.
LOVERS AND OTHER STRANGERS

was a strong woman and in her youth a great beauty, which is a powerful social tool even if it carries a sell-by date, but it was never plain sailing, all the same. The gap today would not feel wide, she from the respectable middle class, he from what one of my broth-ers refers to rather caustically as the “landless gentry,” but in 1935, the year of their marriage, it was a chasm. The cool dismissals, the veiled snubs, the cold-shouldering of a friendly gesture—I have witnessed them all, both through the puzzled eyes of childhood, and with the more knowledgeable vision of later on. I suppose standing, as it were, on both sides of the divide has infl uenced my work, but, as anyone logical could tell, the accusation of snobbery is wide of the mark. It is precisely because I identify with both teams that my writing, if I am allowed to say so, aspires to a kind of social justice which, I believe anyway, is one of the reasons it has reached so wide an audience.
But if my past gives the characters an edge and makes the world of Downton Abbey more real, then I am more than content. Certainly, it is pretty real to me, and I hope to you as well.

Q&A
Mary has become the
series’ heroine. What do
you think of the fans’
reaction to her?
I was told there is a Twitter account called Lady Mary’s
Eyebrows, which is just bonkers! I tend to not take it all too seriously, but it’s incredibly fl attering. I’m just very proud
to be a part of something that’s captured people’s hearts. Has it been hard to play
the on-again, off-again
relationship with Matthew?
Julian writes the episodes as we go, so we can’t play what’s coming, which is great as an actor. In the second season I was thinking, “Maybe she’ll
have to marry Richard and be miserable; maybe that would
be interesting to play.” The course of true love never did
run smooth, and there are still issues that [Matthew and
Mary] have to resolve. How was it working with
Shirley MacLaine?
Oh! She was brilliant! It was suddenly very quiet when she
left, and we all missed her. Being in the same scenes as Maggie Smith and Shirley MacLaine is something I will never forget.
—Mary Margaret
What makes Matthew and Mary
a good love match?
Since the beginning, they’ve seemed like opposites;
they’ve clashed and caused sparks. But opposites attract,
and sparks make fi re. Can they have a happy ending?
One of the constant dramatic pressures on the characters is
that personal happiness is often sacrifi ced for the sake of the
house. Everyone is striving to see the estate continue; they see its survival as the key to happiness.
What’s it like knowing that
royals like Prince William and
Duchess Kate are tuning in?
What’s wonderful is that the show seems to appeal to a
huge range of people. You’re currently starring on
Broadway as well, in
The Heiress. What do you enjoy
about doing period dramas?
Aside from the fun costumes and beautiful settings, it’s a chance to explore where
we’ve come from and how much or how little we’ve changed.
Would you like to
comment on reports that
you’ll be leaving the series in
the fourth season?
I could tell you, but then I’d have to have Mrs. Patmore cook you. …
—K. H.

was nominated for an Emmy last year for her portrayal of Lady
Mary Crawley, eldest daughter of Lord and Lady Grantham.

6 How often should you replace
your Christmas tree lights?
(a) Every year
(b) Every three years
(c) Every 10 years
Answer: (b). “After about three
years, Christmas lights wear out,
which means they’re more likely to
short and cause electrical fi res,”
says Nancy Harvey Steorts, author
of Your Home Safe Home. Another
smart rule: Never attach more
than three strings of lights to an
extension cord.
7You’ve taken your dog for a
walk in a winter wonderland.
What’s the fi rst thing you
should do when you return home?
(a) Wipe her paws with a damp
cloth
(b) Rub her with a towel or blanket
to warm her up
(c) Give her a drink of water
Answer: (a). “In cold weather, pets
may track through ice-melting
chemicals and rock salt, which
can cause cuts on their pads and
be hazardous if ingested,” says
veterinarian Jules Benson, vice
president of veterinary services for
Petplan pet insurance. So give your
pup’s paws a quick bath before she
gets a chance to lick them clean.
8True or false: Artifi cial
gas-log fi replaces are
typically safer than wood-
burning fi replaces.
Answer: True. Several studies
have found that natural wood
smoke contains at least fi ve known
human carcinogens. If you have a
wood-burning fi replace, you can
make it less harmful by burn-
ing hardwood, such as ash or
beech, which emits lower levels of
damaging particles compared with
softwood like pine.
It’s better to wrap him up and imme-
diately call for medical assistance.
4Which accessory is most
important to wear when out
playing in the snow?
(a) Earmuffs
(b) Thick, woolly socks
(c) Sunglasses
Answer: (c). On sunny, wintry
days, snow can refl ect 80 percent
of all UV rays (dry beach sand,
by comparison, refl ects only 15
percent). That intense exposure
can cause photokeratitis, or snow
blindness, a temporary condition
that creates extreme sensitivity to
light and increases the risk of sun-
related eye disorders later in life.
5You’re heading down the slope
on your family ski trip when
you begin to fall. You should:
(a) Brace yourself
(b) Go limp
Answer: (a). Stiffening your
muscles actually helps absorb
the shock of an impact, taking
1Which wintry forecast is the
most dangerous to drive in?
(a) 32 degrees, clear skies
(b) 18 degrees, snow
(c) 35 degrees, rain
Answer: (c). Studies show that
while 24 percent of all auto
accidents are the result of
adverse weather conditions, most
occur on wet—not icy—pavement.
The reason: Drivers are more
likely to proceed slowly and care-
fully when ice and snow are on
the ground, but they don’t take the
same precautions during rain.
2Your neighborhood pond has
frozen over. How thick should
the ice be before you break
out the skates?
(a) Two inches
(b) Five inches
(c) 12 inches
Answer: (b). Four to fi ve inches
of ice can hold up to 250 pounds
of weight, but make sure the ice
is blue or clear. Gray, white, or
opaque ice indicates a weak crystal
structure and should be avoided.
3Your husband just came in
from shoveling snow. He can’t
stop shivering and his speech is
slowed. What should you do?
(a) Give him a hot beverage (like
coffee) to warm him up
(b) Start rubbing his arms and legs
to increase circulation
(c) Dress him in dry clothing and
wrap him in a blanket
Answer: (c). Caffeine can cause
the heart to beat faster and hasten
the effects of cold on the body. And
stimulating the limbs before the
trunk can drive cold blood toward
the heart and lead to heart failure.

As our judicial system is bound
by laws and case law, wouldn’t
it be better for a computer like
Watson to decide cases? A com-
puter has no bias. Consider our
Supreme Court: Decisions are
often 5–4 along party lines.
—James Bobreski, Penn Yan, N.Y.
But who would program “Courtney”? Laws aren’t abso-lute like equations. They’re not comparable to chess moves that can be analyzed, or to facts, such as George Washing-ton’s birth date. (Hmm. Was it Feb. 11, 1731, according to the Julian calendar used then? Or Feb. 22, 1732, by today’s Gregorian calendar?) Instead, they’re subject to interpretation, which is understandable: Laws are written by ordinary people, then modifi ed (or mangled) by committees on their bumpy road to passage. As for case law, it’s teeming with human interpretations; it would just detract from our efforts to keep Courtney above the fray. Then there’s the Constitution, which embodies our fundamental laws and more. Over time, translating its precepts into current reality grows more and more diffi cult, demonstrated by our frequently split Supreme Court decisions. Our judicial system could be improved, all right, but not by heading toward rigidity. Fairness lies in the opposite direction.
