about equity trading. But, thetime when I was finally readyto make my first investmentcoincided with my decision topursue management studies. With my source of income cut

off, I could not test myself intrading but my inclinationtowards finance disciplinecontinued on at my college.

When I decided to appear for YMO test, my only thought was to test my financialknowledge. But a few dayslater, I got a mail from Money Wizards informing me that Ihad won the second prize. Apparently, my financialknowledge was not that bad. I was invited to attend the fe-

licitation program in Mumbaiorganized by Money Wizardsand Principal Mutual Funds. There, we got an opportunityto hear from some of veryprominent people including big names from AMFI, MFutility and Principal MutualFund. I also got an opportu-nity to share wisdom withsome of the other winners; acouple of whom were frompremier management insti-

tutes of our country. I defi-nitely came back from therericher in knowledge, experi-ence...and an iPad!

The tireless effort that Money

Wizards had put in to spreadfinancial general awareness isreally laudable. I hope, through the efforts of Money Wizards, the young and theold alike of our country areable to understand the signifi-cance of general financial lit-eracy to better manage theirearnings. I would like to takethis opportunity to thankMoney Wizards for offeringme with this coveted opportu-nity. I will always cherish andhold this memory dear.

One fine April afternoon, myphone beeped with a newemail from the Finance Clubof IIM Ranchi about a na-tional-level Finance andMoney Olympiad that was to

happen soon. What particu-larly caught my attention wasthe word ‘national’ which be-spoke volumes about thegrandness of the event.

The exam was supposed totest the basics in financialliteracy. Having the luxury ofpre-MBA work experience, I was aware of a few basics intaxation; but still, my grasp ofit was still only tenuous at best. I’d seen my senior col-leagues spending a thousand

bucks to get their income taxreturns filed. I decided to dothat on my own and thus setout to learn about taxationand tax planning in detail. I became so adept that from thenext year onwards I was filingthe returns for the majority ofmy colleagues.

This newly ingrained interestspread into other domains offinance. I also started learning

IIMR Memoirs— An Expat’s Story

“What is meant to be willalways find its way..” –Trisha Yearwood

When I joined the PGDMcourse at IIM Ranchi in 2014,I was coming with an IT workexperience in one of the bestcompanies to work for. It wasnot the company, but the workprofile that compelled me toleave this amazing FMCG or-ganization for further studies.IT wasn’t for me. We cannotlook back and change our pastdecisions, but we definitelyhave a choice when it comes tothe future ones. Marketinghad been the domain I always wished to work in – productmarketing and branding. I wouldn’t have envisaged get-ting an experience of mydream profile even beforegraduating.Summer internship is the op-portunity to gain exposure toan industry, obtain practicalexperience in your chosendomain (or the one you hap-pened to get, by chance!) andforesee your fit to this kind of work area. The wait was long and kill-ing... nobody will confess, butit’s a dreadful wait while yourfriends are getting placed one by one and you don’t make itpast the shortlist or the GD. Ittook a few prayers and a lot ofpatience – and a companyfinally shortlisted me. Thisgroup offered an international work opportunity, somethingto grab with both hands! Thecatch: this was one of the infa-mous countries rocking themedia with news of Ebola andBoko Haram over the past few years. I was slightly skepticalabout Nigeria, but this was anadventure I was more than willing to take on!The 2 months in Lagos offerednot only enormous learning, but also the chance to observea new country, the diversecultures, the people and their ways, business environmentand a part of the FMCG indus-try up close. I was thrilled to work with the marketing of

snacks product of this com-pany. Along with 6 other marketing

interns from various b-schoolsin India, I began my 8-weekinternship with a semi-structured induction that in-cluded a market visit. Thesemarkets are very similar tothose in India, a lot of hustle- bustle in those small lanes, delivery vans and people eve-rywhere. We met the distribu-tors, retailers and foot soldiers(sales people) to understandthesales of our products. Bythe end of one week, we weregetting accustomed to curiousstares, compliments and men-tions of Bollywood movies andheroes from random passers- by. We did not face any com-munication barriers, as every-one speaks English. Overall, people were very friendly andthis helped a lot in the marketresearch phase. People hap-pily complied when I ap-proached them with my sur- vey on awareness and percep-tion regarding the snacks pro-duced by my company. Theonly pitfall was their expecta-tion of something in return fortheir time!Nigerians don’t believe in sav-ing for tomorrow, which mayseem very peculiar to an In-dian. They will buy expensiveelectronic gadgets, even if theydon’t have steady electricity athome. The country is grap-pling with a lot of changes-political structure, fuel scar-city, go-slows (That’s whattraffic jams there are called),and in spite of all these issues, people are very hopeful, warmand respectful to everyone. Alarge expat community – Indi-ans, Chinese, Europeans etc.lives in Lagos, and socializes with the locals, without any barriers –we experienced trulyglobal diversity and intermin-gling. Asian-themed restau-rants with Buddha sculptures, live music band playing a Bol-lywood number, Nigerianmaids cooking deliciousChhole Parathas and DosaChutney – we loved it all...

Knowing that we internsmissed home and our friends back here, our hospitable

friends from the workplaceinvited us to get-togethers.On the work front, working 6days a week was not some-thing we liked, but adjustedto. The environment was re-laxed and informed. We didn’thave an assigned place to sit,and it was okay to approachanyone with queries and they would entertain us. The CEOhimself questioned us on ourproject’s progress and theinsights we gathered.Post-survey, I was to develop aBTL communication strategy– in short, a plan to increasethe visibility of my productand increase customer conver-sion. This was a fun exerciseand my mentor used to chal-lenge my line of thinking tomake sure I had conviction inmy own ideas. I proposed twoideas, and both were imple-mented. This was one remark-able thing I really loved aboutmy organization – if you havean idea, you get to execute itand see the results. The man-agement would encourage youto take initiative, and even if you make mistakes, it’s alearning experience. My mentor had helped mestructure my project well, bal-ancing the market visits withsome time to observe, reflectand study. He was extremelysupportive, as were the vari-ous people in different func-tions I approached for help. Istudied and applied some as-pects of consumer behavior, market research, marketingcommunication strategies –and my most important learn-ing outcome was the under-standing how every function, even within marketing, is sotightly linked to the other. Also that marketing is notglobe! On the whole, my internship was enriching – a discovery ofmany new things. I am in-credibly happy about the timeI spent there, and will remem- ber it with nostalgia.

traveller is wary and observant.

He finds himself crashing the

birthday party once again. Only

this time, he gets to see it in a

different light.

Like a man with heightened

senses, he begins to walk the

familiar halls again. The host is

different. The guests are differ-

ent. But the house? It’s just the

same. A year has gone by with

little change. The same archi-

tecture is flaunted, the same

history recounted, only by dif-

ferent people. A toddler, or an

ageing institution... whose

birthday is it exactly? Silent as a

shadow, the traveller keeps

 walking.

A new question plagues him. If

all is still the same, was the

journey truly worth the effort?

What would be the problem if

he did not put himself through

so much pain? What would

have happened had he never

left? He sits down beside the

pool and contemplates.

The answer comes to him long

after the last cracker is burst

and the last guest has bid good-

bye. He had not achieved grand

laurels during his travels and

“Why do you go away? So

that you can come back. So

that you can see the place

 you came from with new

eyes and extra colours. And

the people there see you dif-

ferently, too. Coming back to

where you started is not the

same as never leaving.”

 ― Terry Pratchett,

As each year comes and goes

 we find ourselves standing at

the same cross-roads, struggling

 with the same choices. Despite

being older and wiser with

more than a single grey hair to

our name, we inevitably end up

in the same situation again and

again and again. Yet each time

it is different. Each time, we are

different.

This was just the sixth but for

the traveller, only the second.

And for a very lucky few, it was

their first. A celebration, a

birthday is always accompanied

by festivities. Song and dance

and merriment is there to as-

sure that everyone has a gala

time. Song and dance and mer-

riment is there to make sure

that all are distracted from that

which is in plain sight. But the

neither had the denizens of the

night. But they were all

changed, in inexplicable ways.

A subtle shift of perspective is

all that is required to see a host

of changes. One does not go on

a journey to see the world. One

goes to change the world and

become changed in turn. This

realization makes the travellersmile. He feels happy that he

went on the journey in the first

place. He picks up his backpack

and starts walking again. He no

longer minds so much that the

people at the party are some-

 what changed. He understands

that they all went through their

own incredible transformative

journey in between two birth-

day parties. The old friends he

met were all in fact, differentpeople. Nor does he care that

the venue was unchanged. The

house is just a shell. After all,

the life of a party is the people.

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT, RANCHI

The ninth Indian Institute of Management was established at Ranchi in 2010. This was made possible

with the extensive support of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta and the Government of Jhark-

hand, working under the guidance of Ministry of HRD, Government of India.

We started at a time when competition and aggression was prevalent in management education. Understand-

ing the need to incorporate right values in young minds, IIMR was started to incorporate right values in

young minds and impart education for the information age that encourages networking and collaborative

advantage.

IIM Ranchi currently offers a two year PGDM in General management and another two year fulltime

programme on Human Resources Management (PGDHRM), Fellow Program in Management and 18

month part time Diploma in Management (PGEXP).

Our Programs are different and we are an institute with a difference.
