    VISIT PAPUK NATURE PARK

The needs of urban man for original and preserved nature are ever growing, and a trip to the nature is one of the best ways to escape everyday life. Numerous hiking trails enable the visitors to stroll through scenic nature, which is attrac-tive and special throughout the year. During the summer, tourists can find refreshment in two favorite Slavonian tourist spots: thermal water pools in Velika and Orahovica Lake. Even though there are no official ski resorts in the Nature Park those who prefer snow and winter sports can ski, sleigh or simply hike. Sport climbing enthusiast can enjoy this extreme sport on Sokoline climbing trail with bolted routes; the trail is ideal for training and acquir-ing basic free-climbing skills. There are 104 kilometers of marked bicycle trails on Papuk. If you visit the Nature Park and happen to come near Velika village, make sure to hike the educational trail of Lapjak, where you will find educa-tional panels that will introduce characteristic of Nature Park. From here you can also reach the peak of the Pli hill where the new paragliding lift off site is situated; here you can fly with certain amount of adrenalin in your blood. Another educational trail is situated in Jankovac, where is also mountaineer hut offering visitors accommodation and refreshment. Public Institution is offering interpretative guiding through the natural and cultural heritage of the Nature Park for organized groups of visitor, and for children we have prepared several educational School-in-the-nature programs.

    Rupnica - Geological natural monument

Rupnica is special geological feature in the Park and also the first proclaimed geological monument of nature in Croatia. It is a very rare morphological feature of volcanic rock and therefore was proclaimed as a protected part of the nature in 1948. Square and hexagonal prismatic pillars were created through columnar jointing of albite rhyolites. This morphological distinctiveness is the consequence of opening of the system of crevices when lava is cooling on its way out of the Earth. Rocks of Rupnica, according to the opinion of one group of geologists, were created 70 million years ago and isotopic determination of the age of the rock sample supports this estimate. Another group of geologists supports the idea that volcanic body is much younger, cre-ated through evolution of the Pannonian basin. Never the less, Rupnica is a unique geological feature in Croatia. The most beautiful examples of similar rock pillars are Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland and 150 m high pillars of Devils Tower in Wyoming, USA.

    Park-forest Jankovac

Jankovac, situated on the northern Papuks slopes, 475 m above see level is one of the most beautiful highland val-leys. It is rich with cold springs and clear streams, sur-rounded by centuries old beech-forest that is a part of the biggest old forest complex in the Papuk Nature Park. Due to its astonishing natural beauty Jankovac has been pro-claimed as protected park-forest since 1955. Here one can find typical karst phenomena as karst sinkholes with 10-40 m in diameter, springs and caves (tomb of count Jankovi

and Maksims cave). During the several thousand of years, bursting water of Skakavac (Grasshoper) waterfall, with the help of mosses and algae, has created a 30 m high limestone tufa-barrier. Abundance of water that falls high above is a majestic scene, unique in the whole Slavonia, especially during the harsh winters when waterfall freezes in fascinate ice pillar. Climbers lodging with the meadow in front is the main gathering place for visitors and moun-taineers, and there are also two artificial lakes connecting the cave spring and the waterfall. The first inhabitants of this valley were the German (Nieder- Sachsen) glaziers - the remnants of tombstones testify about these first residents of Jankovac. At the beginning of the 19th century count Josip Jankovi had built a hunting lodge here and he had moved here from Vienna court. He was probably the first person who recognized the aesthetic value of this valley. Commemorative to him in Park Forest Jankovac, nearby the climbers lodging educational trail Counts trail was build. This is the place where visitors can learn about natural and cultural features of this area.

    Special forest reserve Sekulinake planine

In the Gudnoga area, that is a part of the forest-manage-ment unit Sekulinaka planina, there is round 150 years old beech and fir forest that has been protected as special for-est reserve since 1966. It covers area of only 8,01 hectares on the 740-820 m a. s. l. This old forest is very important for biological diversity because forest oases with primeval forest character are scarce in Papuk.

    Natural monument Old oaks

Old oaks are situated about 400 m form the road Kamenska-Voin, NE from the turn to the hunting lodge Djedovica. One can reach them following the path, that is the remnant of the horseback riding trail from the begining of the 20th century, but also following the 200 m long slope above the road. The oak-trees are 33 m high, and 420 and 500 years old. They grow in Pannonian fir and beech forest where usu-ally oak trees do not meet their ecological growth optimum. The sunny exposition probably allows them to reach such old ages.

Natural monument Habitat of English Yew

The last know natural habitat of English Yew on Papuk is in forest area of Debeljak, NW from Zveevo settlement. Here yew plants grow in compact area of about 150 m2. They grow mainly
