PaperShop is challenge to the conventional workshop. Designed for 5 artisians, PaperShop pulls from the principles of traditional paper making while setting up a contrapuntal relationship between these principles and traditional weaving techniques in order to highlight a universal form of tranditional craftmanship.

ConceptLike weaving, traditional papermaking uses the same princples of the warp and weft to create patterns of different strengths. Understanding this language of interconnection allows the building to use a common language that produces multiple outcomes or different forms.

Design ProcessDesigned in a series of steps, the paper making studio evolves from a conceptual idea of weaving traditional paper making fibers such as hemp, linen, mohair, and cotton into a language for spatial development. Like the fundamentals of warp & weft used in weaving, the building uses contrapuntal systems to create drama through opposing conditions. Light and dark, soft and strong, reflection and directness, stereometric and techtonic.

DramaTransparency and light penetration both help to dry paper and create interest.

ContrapuntalLight and dark, stereometric and techtonic, soft and rough, crisp edges and delicate curves, and contrapuntal rythyms within the building delineate space

Spatial DevelopmentA 1/8 scale model explores this language further, setting up a contrapuntal relationship between built space and conceptual idea.

Even LightingDefused overhead lighting is condusive to highly reflective work surfaces used to make paper.

Light-Collecting SkinMultiple skins on the building collect and distribute light into the workshops below.

Suspended FloorThe first and second floor spaces are anchored into the building by the back and forth movement of the workers.

Soft FloorThe light wood decking on the ground floor is set at its maximum span, allowing the wood to flex and move.

DetailFour layers work together to create the second-floor ceiling. Louvers, space frame, glass roof, and paired I-columns work to distibute the weight while adding to the lightness of the structure.

1/2 Scale ModelThe atrium space was modeled to see the structural capacity of the paired I-columns.

Papermaking is both a subtractive and additive process simultaniously using a complex system of steps to create what is otherwise a simple piece of paper.

The warehouse is activated by light. The roof and ceiling structure collect and reflect light down into the spaces of the building.

A space frame and corregated glass roof ensure optimal transparency.

Interior panels create structure and volume, while joining the two floors.

The exterior volume of the building has visual complexity and multiple textues, connecting the building with the vernacular nature of the site.

Zones within the building separate wet and dry workspaces, while concrete wall panels enclose loud mechanical equipment.
