    [CD 12 Track 2]

    Part A(p.2)

    Announcer: Situation.

You are Amy Lau, a Senior Secondary 1 student. You and your classmates, Jim and Paul, are helping

with the preparation work for a new student award scheme in school. Mr Tsang, the vice principal, is incharge of this. You will have a total of four tasks to do. Follow the instructions in the Question-Answer

Book and on the recording to complete the tasks. You will find all the information you need in the

Question-Answer Book and on the recording. You have two minutes to familiarise yourself with Tasks

    1 4.

    (two minute pause)

    [Track 3]

    Task 1 (p.2)

Announcer: You do not know much about organising and promoting a student award scheme, so you are

asking Mr Tsang about it. As you listen, complete the note sheet below and tick the boxes showing

what student award schemes there have been. You have 30 seconds to study the note sheet below. At

the end of the task, you will have one and a half minutes to tidy up your answers.

    (30 second pause)

Amy: Good morning, Mr Tsang. Were not sure how to organise and promote the new student award

scheme at school. Could you give us some ideas?

    Mr Tsang: Sure.

Amy: First, wed like to know why the school has student award schemes.Mr Tsang: We have a student award scheme every year because we feel the scheme can motivate students to

do well in and out of school.

Amy: Do well in and out of school?

Mr Tsang: Yes, we hope that students can become all-round.

Amy: So the scheme can help students develop into all-round individuals.

    Mr Tsang: Thats right.

Amy: Okay. Thereve been a number of award schemes at school There was the Life-long

Mr Tsang: Life-long Learning Scheme. That was last year, and the year before, we had the Community

Service Scheme.Amy: Sorry, I didnt catch that. Did you say Life-long Service Scheme?

Mr Tsang: No, Life-long Learning Scheme. The other one was the Community Service Scheme.

Amy: Oh, I see. Did students respond well to these schemes?

Mr Tsang: The response couldnt have been better. About 700 students joined the schemes.

Amy: 700? Thats a lot! How many winners were there altogether?

Mr Tsang: Thirty for each award, so altogether, there were sixty winners.

Amy: How did you decide on the winners? I guess students were assessed differently for the two

schemes, right?Mr Tsang: Yes. For the Life-long Learning Scheme, students had to write an essay about the things they

hoped to learn. As for the Community Service Scheme, the assessment was based on the

    community services students did.

Amy: Let me just write that down an essay they wrote, and the community

services they did. There. What about publicity? What did you do to promote the schemes?

Mr Tsang: We put up posters and made announcements at school assemblies to encourage students to join the

schemes. You might consider doing the same for the new award scheme.

Amy: Guess so. But hold on, did you say you put up posters and made announcements at school

assemblies? And is assemblies spelled A-S-S-E-M-B-L-I-E-S?

Mr Tsang: Yes to both your questions. Hope the information was useful.

Amy: Yes it was. Thanks for your help, Mr Tsang.

    Mr Tsang: Youre welcome.

Announcer: This is the end of Task 1. You now have one and a half minutes to tidy up your answers.

(one and a half minute pause)

    [Track 4]

    Task 2(p.3)

Announcer: You, Jim and Paul are deciding on the selection criteria for the new student award scheme. You

are taking notes. As you listen, complete your note sheet below and tick the boxes to show what

you all agree to include. Some notes have been done for you already. You have 30 seconds to

study the note sheet. At the end of the task, you will have one and a half minutes to tidy up your

    answers.

    (30 second pause)

Paul: Hi, Amy. Hi, Jim. We need to talk about the selection criteria for the new student award scheme.

Amy: Let me just get a pen and a piece of paper to jot down what we discuss.

Jim: Sure. All ready, Amy? Lets start with community service.

Paul: I think we should include community service as one of the assessment criteria to let students know

its important to give back to society.

Amy: Yes, its important to give back to society. Community service also reminds students that studying

is not the only important thing in life.

Jim: I couldnt agree more. Studying is important, but our lives shouldnt be built around it. There are

other things in life besides school and studying.

Amy: Let me just note that down, shows that studying is not the only important

thing in life. There. And Ill put a tick here.

Paul: Now academic achievement. Personally, I dont think it should be one of the criteria. Theres

another award scheme for that already.

    Term Paper 1

Amy: Theres another award scheme for that already? Oh, you mean the Academic Award Scheme?

(Paul: Yes.) In that case, lets leave academic achievement out then.

Jim: How about the awards students have won?

Paul: Im not keen about that either. Itll discourage students who have never won an award.

Jim: Right. There are many students that have never won any awards and we dont want to discourage

them.Amy: I agree. Lets drop that from the criteria list as well.

Paul: Now ECA participation thats extra-curricular activities.

Jim: I think we should include this on the list. This shows that students have balance in their school

    lives.

Amy: I agree. Balance in students school lives is important.

Paul: If were all okay with it, lets make it one of our criteria. (pause) Okay, lets move on to discuss

the award ceremony. We need to think of a performance to include.

Jim: We could ask the Music Club to perform at the ceremony. Their new band is looking for a chance

    to perform.

Amy: But theyll need a lot of time to rehearse, wont they?

Jim: Thats true. The band will need lots of rehearsal time since theyre so new and inexperienced.

Paul: What about a dramaperformance? Its interesting to most students.

Jim: Yes, its interesting, but Im afraid we dont have enough time for it. A drama performance usually

lasts more than thirty minutes; its just too long.

Amy: True. Ah! Why dont we ask the Dance Club to perform? Theyve just won a competition.

Paul: Won a competition? Sounds perfect theyre sure to put on a good show.

Jim: Yes, Im looking forward to seeing their great performance.

Announcer: This is the end of Task 2. You now have one and a half minutes to tidy up your answers.

(one and a half minute pause)

    [Track 5]

    Task 3(p.4)

Announcer: Jim has called you and Paul for a meeting to discuss the costs and prizes for the student award

scheme. Tick the relevant boxes and fill in any missing information on your note sheet below. You

have 30 seconds to study the note sheet. At the end of the task, you will have 30 seconds to tidy up

    your answers.

    (30 second pause)

Jim: Thanks for coming at such short notice. I just realised that we havent talked about the costs and

    prizes for the award scheme.

Amy: Oh, I forgot about that too. Weve only decided on the prizes. So, how much should we set aside

    for this?

Paul: Sorry, wait a second. Can someone remind me of the prizes we are going to give out?

Jim: Last time we decided to give out book coupons.

Paul: Oh right, and a return ticket to Beijing.

Amy: A return ticket to Beijing? That will be expensive!

Paul: No. Ive checked that if we book the ticket six months in advance, it should cost us HK$1 800.

    4/6

Jim: HK$1 800 thats a bargain! What about the book coupons? How much will they cost?

Amy: Well need to get twenty book coupons at HK$100 each.

Paul: All right. Then well allocate HK$2 000 for book coupons.

Jim: How about our promotional materials like posters? How much should we set aside for that?

    Paul: Im guessing perhaps HK$300?

Jim: I dont think itll be that expensive. HK$200 should be enough.Amy: Yes, that should be about right. So HK$200 for promotion. How about the equipment

needed for the award ceremony, like microphones and speakers?

Paul: We dont need to worry about that. We can borrow them from the school office free of charge.

Jim: Great, then theres no need to include microphone and speakers in our cost list. But we still need

to get a fog machine for the dance performance. According to the information I have here, it costs

    HK$ 1 100 to rent a fog machine for a day.

Amy: HK$1 100 for a fog machine? Wow, thats not exactly cheap

Jim: True, but the Dance Club requested it. Anyway, I guess weve gone over all the costs, right?

Paul: Wait are we going to decorate the school hall for the award ceremony?

Jim: Yes, but weve got some leftover items we can recycle that means no spending on decorations.

Amy: Great! So, weve decided on prizes and talked about the costs; what about deadlines?

Paul: Let me think. The award ceremony that can wait until next term. But we should think about the

promotional materials. We have to get things ready for the printers as soon as possible.

Jim: Oh, right. I guess well have to finish everything within a week then.

    Amy: Im afraid so.

Announcer: This is the end of Task 3. You now have 30 seconds to tidy up your answers.

    (30 second pause)

    [Track 6]

    Task 4(p.5)

Announcer: You have taken your proposal to Mr Tsang for him to comment on. Listen to the conversation and

write down the things that Mr Tsang likes and the things you still need to think about before you

submit your final proposal. You have 15 seconds to study the table below. At the end of the task,

you will have 30 seconds to tidy up your answers.

    (15 second pause)

Amy: Good morning, Mr Tsang. Weve drafted a proposal for the new student award scheme, and we

would appreciate it if you could give us some feedback.

Mr Tsang: Sure. Lets look at what youve put together.

Amy: Here you are. Weve designed a poster for you to look at.

Mr Tsang: Hmm I like the poster its colourful. Itd easily catch students attention.

Amy: Thanks, Mr Tsang. Paul designed it. And what do you think about the rest of our proposal?

Mr Tsang: Hmm Lets see. I think the prizes proposed are quite attractive. Students would find book

coupons useful. And a return ticket to Beijing well, thats surely a prize everyone will like. How

    much does the ticket cost?

    Amy: Around HK$1 800.

Mr Tsang: Are you sure? Youd better confirm the cost of the ticket with the tour operator.

    Term Paper 1

Amy: Yes, well follow up on that. Let me just make a note of that confirm cost of return

    ticket to Beijing. Done.

Mr Tsang: And I like your idea of having an award ceremony. I especially like your idea of including a dance

performance in it. Thats great! The dance performance is sure to liven things up.

    Amy: Thanks, Mr Tsang.

Mr Tsang: Oh, and have you found your MCs yet? Whos going to host the ceremony?Amy: MCs? Actually we havent thought about that yet.

Mr Tsang: Thats all right, but youd better think about it soon.

Amy: Okay. Thanks for reminding us.

Mr Tsang: No problem. Another thing to think about is the cost of renting a fog machine. It seems a bit costly.

Why dont you use dry ice instead? A dry ice machine is much cheaper.

Amy: Really? We thought dry ice would be more expensive than a fog machine. In that case, well use

dry ice instead since its cheaper.

Mr Tsang: Ive one final suggestion. You might want to form a work committee to help you, as theres a lot

to be done in the months ahead.

Amy: Form a work committee? Why havent any of us thought of that? We do have a lot of work to get

done! Thanks for your suggestion, Mr Tsang.

Announcer: This is the end of Task 4. You now have 30 seconds to tidy up your answers.

    (30 second pause)

    Part B(p.6)

    [Track 7]Announcer: Situation.

You are Kyle Chan, a Senior Secondary 1 student at Tsuen Wan College. You are the coordinator

of the Work Committee for the Summer Challenge Award Scheme at your school and you are

helping Mr Lau, the vice principal, with the scheme.

You will listen to your conversation with Ms Leung, the teacher in charge of the award scheme,

about how to promote it. As you listen, you can make notes on page 2 of your Data File.

Before the recording is played, you will have five minutes to study the Question-Answer Book and

the Data File to familiarise yourself with the situation and the tasks in Section 1 and Section 2.

Keep in mind that you must attempt the tasks in EITHER Section 1 OR Section 2. Do not attempt

    to do both sections.

Complete the tasks by following the instructions in the Question-Answer Book and on the

recording. You will find all the information you need in the Question-Answer Book, the Data File

    and on the recording.

Kyle: Good afternoon, Ms Leung. Could I talk to you about the Summer Challenge Award Scheme?

Ms Leung: Sure, Kyle. How can I help you?

Kyle: Well, since Im new, would you mind giving me a general picture of the scheme?

Ms Leung: Sure. Well, the aim of this scheme is to encourage students to make good use of their summer

    break.

Kyle: I see. Its good to make good use of it since the summer break is quite long. So how does thescheme work?

Ms Leung: There are a number of requirements to the scheme the first is that only Senior Secondary 1 and 2

students can enrol, since theres another scheme for the junior students. Also, students need to do

volunteer work, a physical activity, and to learn or develop a skill to receive an award.

Kyle: So the scheme is made up of three parts volunteer work, physical activity and skill. And they

need to complete all of these during the summer holiday?

Ms Leung: Yes, in 30 days. The exciting thing about this scheme is that you can choose what you learn and

    do.

    Kyle: Really?

Ms Leung: Yes. For volunteer work, our school has teamed up with two organisations. Students can pick what

    to do.

    Kyle: What are the options?

Ms Leung: Students can choose to work with the elderly, care for the ill at hospitals or help poor children with

    their studies.

Kyle: Work with the elderly care for the ill and sorry, Ms Leung, what was the last option?

Ms Leung: Help children with their studies.

Kyle: Thanks. And what about the physical activity section of the scheme?

Ms Leung: Again, students can choose from a list of activities. There are ten in total, including rock climbing,

    rowing, and archery.

Kyle: Rock climbing and rowing sound like a lot of fun. But what is archery?

Ms Leung: Archery is a sport that uses a bow and arrows. Its spelled A-R-C-H-E-R-Y.

Kyle: I see. Thanks, Ms Leung.

Ms Leung: No worries. Okay, lets move on to the skills section of the scheme.

Kyle: Do students get to pick from a list as well?

Ms Leung: Yes. For example, they can learn public speaking skills, sign language, how to be a DJ

Kyle: (interrupts) Sorry, Ms Leung, I didnt catch that. Could you repeat the options for me please?

Ms Leung: Sure, no problem. Thats (slowly) public speaking skills, sign language and how to be a DJ. There

are a few more options too; actually, there are a total of six skills to choose from.Kyle: I see. Thanks, Ms Leung. I really appreciate your help.

    Ms Leung: Youre most welcome.

Announcer: This is the end of the listening component of this test.
