Dear Everyone
We are now rapidly approaching the end of Term
and the end of a busy school session. Our
children have been out and about all over the
Orkney Mainland, Hoy and beyond and had some
great experiences! The P7s have been up to KGS
for their 2 day visit and have come back looking
forward to the next stage in their education. We
wish them well for the future. Their end of
Primary School Farewell for their parents is on
Friday 29 June at 2.30 pm in the Infant Hall.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank
you all for your support over the past session and
wish you all a lovely, relaxing holiday with some
sunshine!

Lost Property
There is a huge amount of unclaimed lost property in school. This will be on display from the week beginning 25th June for 2 weeks on tables in our reception area. Please feel free to pop in and have a
look.
Mrs Clark and Mrs Talbot We say a fond farewell to Mrs Dorothy
Clark and Mrs Marion Talbot who are
retiring at the end of this session. Dorothy
has been with us for 24 years and Marion
for 7 years and they have both been stal-
warts of the Early Years Department. We
wish them every good wish for the
future and hope they take away many happy
memories. A huge thank you to you both for
your dedication and commitment to our
school.
Internet Safety
The children will receiva leaflet this week for (parents)
on ‘Keeping your child safe online’. It has been put to-
gether by Child Exploitation and Online Protection
(CEOP) and was recommended to us by the police.
Please read it and keep it safe to refer to. The CEOP
website www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents also has some
useful advice and information on it.

Learning Steel Pans
Just recently I learned to play the steel pans. I play
the steel pan called the guitars. I don’t play the main
tune but I play the chorels. The music that we are
working on is Brown Gal in de Ring and The Banana Boat
Song. The beaters vary in wideness, the big base drum
beaters are big and pink and the guitar beaters are
quite a bit smaller than the guitars and they are orange.
The seconds beaters are a little bit smaller than the
guitars and they are orange as well. The tenor beaters
are the smallest and they are black, red and orange. If
you hit a pan too hard it comes out with a horrible tin
sound but if you hit it just right it makes a lovely sound.

Learning Steel Pans On the first day of steel pans I wasn’t there unfortu-
nately but all they did was play each pan and decided
which one they wanted to plays so it didn’t affect me
that much. The next week I went and I decided there
and then that I was going to play the guitars (a steel
pan not an actual guitar) but it was great. We started
off by playing Brown Dal in De Rig—it wasn’t that hard
(nly at the end). The steel pan members were: Daisy
(Tenor), Katy (Tenor), Grace (Tenor), Callie (Secons),
Erica (Guitar)s, Me (Katelin on Guitars) and Charlotte
on the Bass but that changed when Charlotte said she
was going on holiday and wouldn’t be here for the con-
cert and wouldn’t be here for the concert so Miss Ged-
des said said I could go on the bass 3 weeks before the
concert. I had to learn my part quickly, but did it!
There are 6 bass drums but I only have to use 3 of
them and I only need 4 notes: G, C, B and D, it is the
concert tonight I am nervous but still excited.

We came to school as normal and we went into class and got ready, we went down to wait for the bus, but
the bus took longer than we thought but it came finally and we were on our way. People were singing on the
bus and about half way there it started to get annoying. We got to Stromness and went to the Museum.
I found our visit to the Stromness museum on Wednesday the 9 of May fantastic for several reasons. I
discovered that I AB and Co made the whale harpoon gun and had no idea what a harpoon gun was but now I
do. There were six little model huskie dogs, they were owned by the Inuit from Lake Lalhkeyed. The seals
were used for a charm.
I also learned that John Rae used plates instead of paddles. There was a really big HBC (Hudson Bay
Company) flag on the wall. I saw John Rae’s fiddle and it looked like it was played a lot. There was a love-
ly pin cushion with really nice beadwork on it and I think John Rae made it. The model of the boat that
John Rae made was in really looked very real. The models of different kind of boats were really detailed.
It was interesting that the whale skull could fit under the table I thought that it would nt fit and its really
big. I liked the portrait of John Rae and the gold border around it, it was very posh.
Finally we got to the stuffed animals but the poor animals. I learned that turtles eat jellyfish and that
stennes trout weighs 29lbs. There was a huge turle on the wall (I think it was pretent but
still looked real). There was some bird nests with eggs in them, I think they were real.
As you can see this was a brilliant trip and I learned a lot. We were just going to go but
before we did Mrs Coltherd asked us onething we learned and we told her and then we went
to the bus and went back to school in Kirkwall.

Little Red Riding Hood
Once upon a time there was a girl and
her name was Little Red Riding Hood.
One day her mum said your Granny is ill.
You must go and visit her said mum.
So little Red Riding Hood set off and she
met a tall figure and it was a wolf. The
wolf said where are you going little girl.
I’m going to Granny’s, sorry, got to go.
So Little Red Riding Hood continued
walking to Granny’s but !!!!!! the Wolf was
there and !!!!! ate Granny up.
Little Red Riding Hood knocked on the
door the wolf said who’s that. It is Lit-
tle Red Riding Hood she said. The wolf
said come in. Little Red Riding Hood said
oh Granny what big teeth . All the
better to eat!! you with my dear. So the
wolf frightened Little Red Riding Hood.
She screamed and the wood cutter
chopped the wolf in
half and out came

Little Red Riding Hood Once upon a time there was a
brave little girl called Red
Riding Hood. Her Granny was
not well. She was lying in bed.
She had to sail on a boat and she took some food.
Her Granny lived in the USA in Penslyannia. When
she was on the boat she met a wicked fox and a
wicked wolf. The fox and wolf chased Little Red
Riding Hood around the boat.
She walked to Granny’s cottage but he fox and the
wolf ate Granny all up. Then Little Red Riding Hood
said what big eyes you have. All the better to see
you with my dear. And granny what big ears you
have. All the better to hear you with my dear. But
granny what big teeth you have. All the better to
eat you with.
Then Little Red Riding Hood screamed like mad but a
wood cutter chopped his belly open and Granny
popped our. After that hey had a great big party.

Primary 2S Visit to Northvet
As part of their ‘Looking after Living Things’ topic, P2 recently visited the Northvet surgery .
We were shown all through the treatment areas and a few of our own animals even got a check
-up! They very kindly gave us a ‘goodie’ bag of equipment such as bandages, syringes, etc for
our own Vet Surgery in class. Here are some of the children’s comments. Afterwards they
went to the Orkney Library where they found lots of interesting books about animals and
heard an animal story.
My favourite thing was seeing the x-ray on the
special computer. I found out that operating an
animal takes a lot of time. Hannah
I liked seeing the dogs and cats. I noticed that you
work very hard. Serena
I felt sorry for the cat that got ran over by the
car. Grace
I loved this trip. It was amazing. Evie
I found out that you have to wear special suits on x-rays. We have started our
own vets in our classroom thanks to Margaret (Northvet nurse). Eleanor
I found out that they keep cow medicine in the fridge. Robbie
The Music Course at the Picky Centre, May 2012
On the first day of the music course we went into the cinema and Mr Giles explained
to us about the course, the rules and the rooms that we were in. The wind band was
in the Quayside suite.
I led the second trumpets, I had the first trumpets behind me and the flutes in front of me.
We had three breaks in one day. We could go anywhere in the building and use the vending
machines, we could also use the running track. The day of the concert was the most fun!
At the concert the hall was split into two by a curtain. we got ready on one side and performed
on the other side. Dad was taking photos the whole time and they were really good. We played
about eight tunes during the concert.
After the concert I was shattered after a brilliant week and I am looking forward to
participating in this event again next year.

In the pre-school we have been inspired by all the building working going on around us. We worked together to plan
and build our own ‘new school’. We visited the site of the new KGS and took photographs of the building works to
make sure our plan included everything that we needed. We then set about making our model.
Our plan! Creating the stairs.
David from Morrisons Construction
had heard all about our new school!
He came to visit us and we shared
our model with him. He was very
impressed! He told us about the
new KGS and shared some of the
plans and pictures with us.
He also helped us learn how the workers stay safe on the building
site. He took some items in. We had to guess what they were and
how they helped to keep the workers safe. We even got to try
them on!
We have learned a lot about how to make unsafe situations safer. We were able to use what
had learned to help make it safe for us to use real tools in our model making! We created
our own rules and signs to make the area safe. We helped to set up and check the area, and
wore safety equipment. We spoke about safe and unsafe ways to use the tools.

I found the mountaineering tiring but
we made it! On the way down, I went
over my ankle and it was sore. At the
tree climbing Oskar went first. He was
nervous and wanted to come down but
he pushed himself to the top and made
it! Dane got to the top and tried to jump
down! At night we did a scatter course
and it was fun! Julie Sivier
Gorge Walking! We had to put on a teddy bear suit
and water resistant trousers and coat. It was boil-
ing!! When we got there we found out that we were
going to climb up a waterfall! When we got to the
top, there was a slide that we went down. Lagganlia
was wicked!

Tuesday 22nd May – Today is the day that we got wet
because we went canoeing. I was really excited to do
this activity. It took 25 minutes to get to the Loch.
We had to tie 2 canoes together and lift it over some
rocks. At the end of the day, we all had a swim and it
was really fun!
Caitlin Drever
On Tuesday, my group went mountain biking. We cy-
cled about 3 miles. After lunch, we did a gorge walk.
It was a long walk to get there but it was fun. We all
had to kiss the waterfall but didn’t have any time to
go down the slide!

Eco Club A thoroughly busy year has been had by our 2011-2012 Eco Club Members. We started the year with 14 targets and all but two have turned green and completed. There is time yet turn to one of the last two green. There have been so many highlights of this year; with visitors coming in to speak; more development of the School Grounds by planting, creating new habitats and putting small recycling facilities outside; our Eco Easter Service; publishing our new Eco Code and finally our Eco Action Day – Teaching and Learning Outdoors. This has been a particular success with many children and staff providing positive feedback and great thoughts about the future. We were ably assist-ed this year by a new member Mr McKinnon (School Janitor) and Mr Macnaughton (School Chaplain) who gave of their time to fully participate in the Club. Many thanks to all the mem-bers, you have worked so hard this year and achieved so much. Some final thoughts from the members themselves; we felt that we really have made a difference with all the work we have done this year. We had a lot of fun and wish we could do it all over again although speaking at the Business Meeting is a little scary. I thought it was really nice getting to know everyone. I thought it was fun and enjoyable. I think everyone has worked really hard and I always had something to say at our Class Council. Mr McKinnon said that it was great to get to know what the club was all about and how it worked. It was great to hear all the opinions the children had and it gave him a lot to think about. Mrs Dufort
