A GOOD STORY TO TELLThe Pandolfa estate dominates the look of the hills of the Valle dei Rabbi. An Estate full of history, whose origin is lost in stories of knights, intrigue and battles and which comes up to the present day looking towards the future. Many are the legends regarding the origin of the estates’ name. The most credible one is also the most beautiful to narrate. Apparently the name Pandolfa derives directly from Sigismondo PandolfoMalatesta, also named “the wolf of Rimini”, who spent a long time in this area before sacking the Castello della Fiumana in 1436. Pandolfo was one of the boldest military leaders of all time, but also a fine arts enthusiastand the portrait that Piero della Francesca made of him in 1451 has become an icon throughout time and is now on display at the Louvre.

The Marquis Albicini was the owner of the estate from 1626 to 1941. Here the Albicini family found refuge during the raids of the French and built villas and farms. They hosted writers such as Giovanni Pascoli and Carducci Giusué, the latter defined the villa as ‘destined to eternity’.In 1941 the property passed on to Commandor Giuseppe Ricci, entrepreneurof Forlì. In the years of the Second World War, Pandolfa is found to live the tragic events of the war. From pleasant holiday estate, it was occupiedby the Germans and then attacked by Polish troops, while many displacedfound shelter in its cellars. As peace was restored, Giuseppe Riccibegan the renovation of the villa in the 50’s, renovation carried out by Benito Partisani, better known as Master Wolf, and Ugo Savorana, who realized works of art up to the legacy of these places. Ricci started considering winemaking, he bought two adjacent estates and after 3 years in which he completely changed the topography of the soil, he planted the first vines of Sangiovese, Trebbiano and Chardonnay.

THE STORY OF A LAND STILL TO BE WRITTENPaola Piscopo, granddaughter of Giuseppe Ricci, put all her effort and enthusiasm into the Estate, giving it an important role in the region. She started a process that continues today thanks to her son, Marco Cirese, who with dedication is offering to Pandolfa an innovative vision throughout a modern, cultured, young and artistic image.

THE LANDTenuta Pandolfa covers an area of 140 hectares on the Tuscany-Romagna Apennines, within the Valley dei Rabbi. Of this area, 40 hectares are planted with vines and are located between 150 and 400 meters above sea level. The shallow soil, typical of Predappio, comes from the decay of ancient sandstone and calcareous marl rich in mineralsand sulphur. Today, the vineyards are mainly Sangiovese followed by Trebbiano and Chardonnay.

A SECOND RENAISSANCENow Pandolfa renews itself. With a new management at the property, Pandolfa undergoes a second Renaissance. The past and present story of the Estate meet on the wine labels. Here relive the characters associated with the history of the Renaissance the Villa, and above all: Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta and his famous portrait by Piero della Francesca. With an ironic and contemporary imaginary, these characters find themselves living in colors inspired by the ‘50s, a period of important restoration of the Villa, and bird beaks instead of a nose, to pay tribute to the work “Calamita cosmica” by Gino De Dominicis. The goal is the immediate recognition: on one side the characters and art of the Renaissance, and on the other side the outspoken character of these wines, which is narrated at first sight. The uniqueness of this story and the features with which we are still writing this story are clear: with momentum, enthusiasm, commitmentand just a tad of lightness. Knowing where we came from and where we are heading.
