Villa Rooms Sahadewa and Nakula

Villa Rooms Bhima and Yudhistra

The Pandawa PhilosophyWhile our philosophy is undoubtedly simple, it is our execution that distinguishes us from the rest. Beyond its stunning location, modern design and full amenities, what makes Pandawas Villas unique amongst the myriad of private luxury rental villas in the area is our combination of subdued comforts, serene spaces and distinctive details that not only make you feel indulgent beyond your imagination, but also makes you feel very much at home. Within the realm of the Pandawas resort exist spaces so subtly sublime, that “luxury” is not only re-defined; it crosses the threshold into the next dimension where all the elements come together in an elegant synergy defined by design and details. As Ubud is considered Bali’s arts and culture capital, we’ve drawn fitting inspiration directly from the Hindu epic The Mahabhrata. Each villa and the central lounge area are represented by one of the five Pandawas brothers, Yudistra, Bima, Arjuna, the twins Sahadewa and Nakula. From thematic color play to sculpted bas-reliefs to custom bodyworks, each space is carefully considered and uniquely designed to match the traits of each heroic character. Because we’ve only built on 2000 out of 7000 square meters, the sprawling property features several tranquil garden niches and beautifully landscaped areas from where to marvel at spectacular valley views or simply meditate by the lagoon to the sound of trickling stone fountains.

The Pandawa LegendThe ancient Hindu saga The Mahabhrata tells the epic tale of the five Pandawas brothers, progeny of the King Pandu who because of a curse that forbade him to have intercourse, were actually fathered by five Hindu gods and birthed from Pandu’s wives Kunti and Madri. Bearing particular divine traits from their ancestry these five heroic Pandawas, Yudistra, Bima, Arjuna, and the twins Sahadewa and Nakula, were known for their righteousness, courage and nobility. Following the death of King Pandu, the brothers were moved to Hastinapura by Kunti and raised as Kuru princes in the City of Elephants along with their cousins the Kauravas. There was bitter conflict between these two clans, in particular a rivalry between each of the eldest brothers Yudistra and Duryodhana that eventually led to a great war to gain control of the Kuru dynasty. The malicious Duryodhana and his evil broth-ers were jealous of the Pandawas and attempted to dethrone them by burning them in a palace, a fate they escaped, and then by beating Yudistra in a game of dice in which he lost everything including Draupadi their collective wife. The Pandawas and Draupadi were exiled from the kingdom and banished to the forest where they lived for twelve years while preparing to take their throne back.In the thirteenth year, the Pandawas demanded the rightful return of their kingdom. When Duryodhana and his 100 brothers refused, a battle ensued on Kuru’s Field between Yudistra’s seven-division army and Duryodhana’s eleven-division army. Known as the Kurukshetra War, the mighty battle raged for eighteen days in which the Pandawas brothers received assistance from many Gods including Lord Krishna who became Arjuna’s mentor and charioteer.

Our fully functional in-house Arjuna restaurant is able to cater to your gastronomic requirements any time of day or night. Although all our meals are prepared à la minute by our well-trained and friendly staff who are able to cook up a romantic meal for two, our main menu concept is family-style dining. Therefore, we are able to provide a mix of Western, Indian, Indonesian, and Balinese cuisine offered buffet style and served on our long dinner table so that family and friends are able eat and drink together in the spirit of the Pandwas brotherhood. Our local Balinese Buffet consists of Balinese-style grilled chicken, cap cay vegetables, and prawns with sambal served with steamed rice. The Asian Buffet covers the continent starting off with a mango and papaya salad then followed by grilled vegetables, tequila lime grilled jumbo prawns, Thai red curry with chicken and Chinese-style sliced beef with black pepper sauce. The house specialty, Pandawas Buffet, includes shrimp and avocado salad, vegetables in a tamarind-based sauce, grilled chicken with sambal, seafood curry, urab (vegetables with spiced coconut dressing), coconut rice and dessert. The Italian Buffet comes with fettuccine and a creamy mushroom sauce, vegetable or beef lasagna, margarita pizza with vegetables or chicken plus dessert.

Pandawas Villas offers two very distinct bars from where to imbibe, celebrate and make merry. The Arjuna Bar is black marble-topped, L-shaped bar featuring a handmade backlit copper relief of the four heroic brothers them-selves. Situated in the resplendent Arjuna common area, it is a perfect spot to relax in after a mid-afternoon dip in the pool or for an after-dinner cocktail prepared by our in-house bartender. If you wish to enjoy a pre-supper aperitif then make your way to Buddy’s Bar. Walk through the hilly garden area, ascend the wooden steps beside the wa-terfall koi pond, and you will have reached the highest point of the property where Buddy’s Bar is located. From here you may enjoy a magnificent vista that includes a neighboring sawah (rice paddy) lined with tall coconut trees and the entire Pandawas estate. Here is truly an ideal locale to from which to view the sun set over the horizon or indulge in a romantic tête-à-tête for two under a moonlit night sky. Both bars serve a full complement of aperitifs, liqueurs, whiskeys, spirits, and cognacs. And our capable mixologists are also able to prepare any number of standard cocktails from Pina Coladas to Planters Punch as well as our signature cocktail, the Royal Pandawa. For those not wishing to tipple, we also offer a range of creatively concocted mocktails.

Villa Yudistra

The eldest of the four brothers, Yudistra is described in the Mahabharata as a master of the spear and bearing “complexion like that of pure gold, pos-sessed of a prominent nose and large eyes, and endued with a slender make.” Ruler of Hastinapura and known as the Dharma Raja (Most Pious One), he is the principal protagonist of the epic. Yudistra’s color is purple and his fragrance is lavender and lemongrass. Large glass sliding doors face out onto the massage pavilion by the pool and the jungle flora beyond, while on the perpendicular glass wall lays a lush garden of palms and other greenery. As with all the villas, the king size teak bed features a King Koil chiropractor mattress covered in high-thread count cotton bed linen and a hand-painted silk top sheet with an embroidered pattern inspired by the crown of a king. Other furnishings are minimal except for an oversize chaise lounge and a couch upholstered in soft beige fabric the color of which complements the purple wall. Directly above the bed is a high ceiling with a hand carved centerpiece while flanking are rattan lamps that add a nice warm glow to the room. The adjoining salon includes a built in oversize wardrobe and double vanity while the partial open-air en suite bathroom features white pickled wall finish, landscaped border, double copper sink, oversize shower head and copper tub that can easily accommodate two.

Villa Bhima

The second Pandawa brother and the strongest and most ferocious of the four, the Mahabharata describes Bhima as a vengeful giant who if offended “are never suffered to live. He never forgets a foe. On some pretext or other he wreaks his vengeance.” His white and grey checked sarong is his battle dress while his fragrance is spearmint, green tea and jasmine. The very bright and cheery villa faces the grand wooden deck and infinity pool on one side and the expansive common area on the other. The white and grey checked wall mural provides a funky façade to the room that is minimally decorated in other respects, save a TV couch and oversize navy blue chaise lounge.A king size teak bed in the spacious room’s centerpiece and is covered in the same quality bed linen and hand-painted silk bedspread as the other villas, while hand painted silk curtains complement the room colors as well. A hand carved wooden relief is once again the high ceiling’s decorative 3D feature while a photograph of Bali life and an abstract painting adorns the walls. Next is the salon room and wardrobe with adjoining bathroom that mirrors the other open-air bathrooms and small gardens. Outfitted with modern amenities and a copper tub for two, the space also includes a hand carved stone relief of Bima the giant himself.

Villa Sahadewa

The youngest and most favored of the Pandawas clan, also a formidable swordsman and skilled musician, he is de-scribed as “heroic, intelligent, wise and ever wrathful, there is not another man equal unto him in intelligence or in eloquence amid assemblies of the wise.” Yellow is his color and vanilla and sandalwood are his fragrances. This bright, sunlit villa faces a garden on one side and the pool deck to the front. The back wall is painted warm ochre yellow and features a traditional mural depiction of Sahadewa himself. The king size bed is top sheeted with a hand-painted silk bedcover that matches the yellow wall and the oversized chaise lounge is upholstered in soft, mustard yellow fabric representing Sahadewa’s color. As with the other villas, Sahadewa has a salon room with vanity and built in wardrobe and an adjoining en suite open-air bathroom outfitted with modern fixtures and a large copper tub fit for two.

Described as “the most handsome person in the whole world, versed in every question of morality and profit and endued with high wisdom,” Nakula was, also like his twin brother Sahadewa, a master with the sword and devoted valiantly to his brothers. His color is orange and his fragrance is citrus Bali breeze. This room with a view overlooks a neat little garden patch and the beautiful valley beyond where the river Tandau runs through it. Front fac-ing through the large sliding glass doors is the pool deck and mini pavilion that provides shade for two daybeds. As with the other villas, the richly colored silk bedspread has the same crown motif as the silk curtains and is a perfect complement to the bright wall and similarly upholstered chaise chair. In keeping with the layout of the other villas, there is a salon cum powder room with oversize wardrobe and vanity.
