Panda Notes January 18th, 2019, Issue 20
Chinese Class Students : we asked some students from Beginning and
Intermediate High School Chinese to tell us about their experiences with
Chinese New Year
I have two favorite Chinese New Years: 2009 and 2013. In 2009, I lived on the
19th floor, and we watched fireworks popping at eye-level. In 2013, I went with
my family to a small village in Yunnan where we had the special experience of
lighting firecrackers, stuffing sausage, and watching Chunwan, the
Spring Festival Gala, with locals.
Joelle Ungos, 11th Grade
My favorite Chinese New Year was in 2017. I was in Chengdu, and we ate
homemade hot pot. I also loved the silence outside the house, but I was also a
bit sad that I didn’t see or hear the fireworks at night. The best part of Chinese
New Year is that we got a break for two weeks!
Yuri Park, 10th Grade
The story of the 12 animals' race is really interesting. I'm really impressed by
rat's clever intelligence. I am looking forward to spending Chunjie with my
family.
YongJun Seo, 10th Grade
Chunjie is special for me because I get to have a break.
I think the performance for Chunjie at school will be embarrassing but fun :)
Hana Sato, 10th Grade
I think Chinese New Year 2019 will be really fun and interesting because there
are many fun activities and kungfu performances. You can earn money greeting
people, like hongbao.
Youngwon Choi , 9th Grade
Chinese New Year celebration is awesome. I enjoy all the traditional food and
activities. I was most impressed one time when I spun a Chinese candy wheel
and got a dragon.
GiHun Lee, 10th Grade
Chinese New Year celebration is something that I love looking forward to every
second semester. I’m able to watch many traditional dances and experience
parts of Chinese culture that I haven’t experienced yet. My favorite part is
watching all the classes perform their Chinese traditional performance.
Jillian Birdsong, 10th Grade
Chinese New Year is when the Chinese celebrate their new year and go to their
place of origin and eat with friends and family and give money to people. It is
also the time of year that tickets are overpriced and people leave Chengdu and
it is quiet.
Kristofer Lindstam, 10th Grade
Friday, January 25th, is CDIS’s annual Chinese Culture Day! In celebration of the
upcoming Spring Festival, Elementary and Secondary students enrolled in Chinese

Dear CDIS Parents,
We hope the new semester is going well for you and your students!
At this time each year, we invite you to participate in a school-
wide survey to help us in our efforts to better serve you and your
children. The survey should only take a few minutes, and you might
win some free café goodies! We need your valuable feedback
about CDIS’s academic programs, learning environment, teachers,
school safety, communication, and anything else you’d like to share
with us! We welcome participation from one or both parents in your
family. Please click here to participate. Five lucky parents will
receive a voucher for 100 RMB in the café. Thanks for your
support!

photos and videos of school activities, and to ask questions and get connected with
other parents!

U19 HS CISA Basketball Tournament
It was an exciting weekend for the CDIS High School teams as they battled it out at the
2019 CISA Basketball tournament. The boys went into the day seeded as number one
and the girls number three.
The girls played a tough opening game, losing to QSI by one basket. They came
together in game #2 and #3, showing fantastic teamwork and determination. They
finished the day strong and walked away with 3rd place.
The boys have been strong this season; they went into the tournament undefeated. Their
dominance continued as they easily won over MIS in the first game, securing their place
in the finals. The final game was CDIS vs LIS. They boys showed great chemistry in their
passing. LIS was a tough competitor, but basket after basket, the boys kept the lead.
They finished the day in 1st place.
Great job, Pandas!
