After several Sundays of the Second Reading coming from Romans 8 (it would have been five Sundays, but the Feast of the Transfiguration fell on a Sunday this year), today we move on to a passage from chapter 9. Some Biblical Scholars find the theme of Israel and the church as expressed in Romans 9--11 to be the heart of Romans. The implication of Paul's exposition of justification by faith rather than by means of law is that the divine plan of salvation works itself out on a broad theological plan to include the whole of humanity. Romans presents a plan of salvation stretching from Adam through Abraham and Moses to Christ (Rom 4; 5) and on to the future revelation at Christ's parousia (Romans 8:18-25). Its outlook is universal. In Romans 9-11, Paul focuses on how the truth about justification by faith in Christ Jesus relates to the promises God made to his Chosen People, the Israelites. Paul’s heart is torn apart and he experiences enormous grief because those Israelites who refuse to accept the Gospel are cut off from the salvific life it offers. Notice that the reference Paul makes is to the “Israelites,” not to the “Jews.” In using this term of address, he is honoring the heritage of the Chosen People and avoiding the political referent. Christians believe that salvation has come through the Chosen People. This salvation is rooted in the seven privileges accorded to them that he lists. The climax of this list is “the Christ, who is over all” who comes from them. The degree of Paul’s sorrow is founded on his belief that Christ is the fulfillment of the promises given to Israel. Paul’s sorrow for them is so intense that he himself would rather suffer for their sakes in imitation of Christ’s suffering so that they might experience life.

Pbro. Santiago Martin. FM Respon._MARC.
