he Board recently hired a new golf architect team, JMP Golf design Group, to guide us through options and opportunities to

improve our now 50+ year old course. It’s really greens, bunkers and tees that need refurbishment. There are many questions that must be studied and solved before a comprehensive plan can be brought to the membership for approval. We are starting the process as this message comes to you and will keep you updated. As you know, water consumption is a major issue and I encourage you to read dirk’s, Andrew’s and Pilar’s articles in this issue as they are very informative. I would like to thank Tom and Ann Hopkins for doing a great job with the His and Hers Tournaments this year. The St Patrick’s day event was the biggest in over 15 years at the club. I would also like to thank John dodsworth in getting the seniors back on track. It’s the first time in years that Senior Golf sold out. There will be many exciting events happening in the club over the next few months. One is Junior Hall of Fame Night on July 23rd tied in with the Member Social honoring four outstanding Juniors from the club. There will be more about this in the July-August issue. Last but not least, I really enjoy being on the Board and I, like my fellow Board Members, are here to do what’s in the best interest for the membership. So if you have any questions, always feel free to ask and I will look into it.

cheers Eoin O’NeillPAH President

I suppose we can say this is the water issue. Or perhaps a more suitable phrase is: water may be an issue this year. Water is and will continue to be one of the highest expenses for PAH. We have two meters for water: one for the golf course and one for the buildings. I think we all understand it’s going to be a difficult year for california. NASA predicted that our state has one year of water left in storage. If you saw the photos of Half dome in Yosemite over the last 4 years, you can understand why we are being proactive about water consumption.

Please read and share the articles in this issue so that there are no surprises. Andrew and Pilar describe drought plans and ways we will be conserving water at the club. In addition, the law now states that we can no longer place water on dining tables unless requested, except for large banquets. Behind the scenes, we replaced a 20 year old dish machine in the kitchen which used 2 gallons of water per load. Our new energy efficient model uses half a gallon. This will reduce the water in the kitchen by over 150 gallons per day.

We will need your help with our conservation efforts. I have talked with the city and although there is nothing in the pipeline, unofficially, cutbacks are being discussed. I expect to see up to a 20% mandatory reduction of water use. Please try to limit shower times and talk with kids about this as we enter the swim season. Use fewer towels if possible on the golf course and in the locker rooms. Anything helps. While we want everyone to enjoy their time at the club, we all have a larger commitment to the health of california and our environment.

“There being no place like this place, near this place, then this place must be the place!”

See you at the clubdirk Zander, ccM

F “Thank you all for your patience while the club was closed for aerification. It was busy at PAH with lots of painting, sanitizing, equipment replacing and carpet cleaning. PAH LINkEdIN GrOUP ANd BUSINESS MIxErAs part of offering our Members various networking opportunities, we will be planning a “Business Mixer” at the club: an opportunity for Members to meet each other in a business setting and learn more about any business opportunities. This is an optional mixer for Members to attend, however all Members need to be first registered on the LinkedIn PAHGcc Group.

The PAHGcc group on LinkedIn is a PrIVATE group and only members of that group are allowed to interact with each other. This is intentional so we can maintain the integrity of the group and admit only PAH Members.

If you are not part of the group already and want to join, please search “PAHGcc” in LinkedIn, under Groups, and submit a request to join. Being part of the group will be a requirement to attend the Business Mixer as the invitation will be sent via LinkedIn.

WINE cOMMITTEE SUrVEY rESULTSThe recent survey had an excellent response as 269 Members replied vs 140 for the previous survey in July, 2008. It appears that we now have more Members interested in wine or there is better communication this time around, perhaps both. The results were most pleasing to the committee as 70% of the replies rated the club’s wine list as the equivalent of a “4” or “5” (1-5 scale; 5 highest). Additionally, there were a number of requests to broaden the wine list. How to accomplish this is being seriously studied. The two main considerations are (& always have been) that the club only serves dinner three nights per week and there is very limited temperature controlled wine storage capacity. The wine committee will work to offer new selections as the current inventory is reduced and space becomes available.

GOLF cOUrSE drOUGHT PLAN 2015

alifornia is in need of substantial replenishment of our water supplies to prevent from slipping into a serious drought this summer. We hope for

heavy storm systems to blow through with significant precipitation. But with drought conditions likely to persist, listed below are areas of the course that will be cut if restrictions are made. Our main goal is to create a balance between great course conditions and being environmentally friendly with our water usage.

Water Features: Lakes and ponds will not be replenished with the exception of #18. The waterfall feature on #18 will be maintained at an acceptable level. We will also transport water from our lakes to irrigate the majority of the landscape beds. Thanks to the hard work of our Landscape crew we now have a variety of drought tolerant plants throughout the course. Instead of irrigating an entire bed, we can now be more selective with our watering.

Native Features: Our native features consume roughly 15 acres of the course. There are approximately 100 sprinkler heads to irrigate this area. We have already drastically reduced our water consumption in these areas. These features would be next on the list if restrictions are made. We would allow them to brown out and allow for winter rainfall to revive them.

Rough Features: Areas of rough that are out of play would be the next area to address. We would begin with areas that have less impact on play, for example, between #6 and #7 fairways. We would continue throughout the course if needed. A positive side to this would be that it would provide for easier course playing conditions.

Fairways: Hopefully it will never come to this, but in the case of a severe drought we would start by shutting off certain areas of the fairways. Our main goal would be to concentrate on keeping the main landing areas healthy and let the remaining surface brown out. Because of our advanced irrigation system, we can be very specific with what areas of the course we want to water.

Driving Range: Based on the Board’s approval, the driving range would represent a substantial savings if restrictions are enforced as it covers roughly 5 acres.

As the club gears up for a busy summer, the Acqua Spa and Fitness center is taking steps to conserve water.

Limit 2 towels per person: Members will be allotted 2 towels per person daily when checking in at the Acqua Fitness desk: 1 cabana towel for pool usage and 1 towel for showering. By reducing towel usage, we can run fewer loads of laundry daily to conserve water.

Shower Time Limit: Please keep showers to 5 minutes or less.

Water Bottles: Try bringing a refillable water bottle to use throughout the day and finish your water on the go instead of throwing it away in a cup each time.

Spa Treatments: Beverage options remain available for spa treatments. However, the relaxation Lounge will not have a water station. Spa providers are more than happy to replenish your drink.

Car Wash: Services will be limited to Fridays and Saturdays. Auto detail changed their soap to less suds which uses 1 gallon of water or less per vehicle.

We appreciate your attention and cooperation with our water conservation campaign.
