Dear Parish Family:

As we enter into Holy Week In this new age of coronavirus, certainly all of us are asking why suffering? Why this suffering?

Yet how apropos with all that we remember of what Jesus experienced this week for all of us.

Honestly, thinking about Easter makes me absolutely weep. Holy Week and Easter are the pinnacle of our year. We can trace

our lives back, Easter by Easter, we have stored up the rich worship of Holy Week, of people with candles, incense, of the al-

tar being stripped, of our brothers and sisters stooping to wash feet, and I could go on and on.

This feast the Triduum is so central to the imagination of the Christian life, I can’t even think about it without coming just a

little bit unglued. Yet even during this special time for the church, I still hear people ask the question why God is doing this to

us. Is this a: A punishment? A warning? A sign? There must be an explanation for this - everything must have an explanation.

When the Tower of Siloam fell, Jesus’ very own disciples wanted to know why. When the blind man in John 9 was sitting

there, the disciples looked at him and wondered—aloud—whose fault it was. That the western “rational” mind has transferred

the question of why - away from God and onto science doesn’t mean that God doesn’t have an answer. In the case of the tow-

er, Jesus said it was so “you”—you—may repent. In the case of the blind man it was so that he, Jesus, could “display the

works of God.”

Actually, everybody wants an explanation. Go anywhere else in the world outside of the United States of America or any oth-

er covid-addled European country and you will find lots and lots of people looking for explanations for bad things. And many

of those people, in one way or another, look to the spiritual universe for those explanations. Some of us will turn to prayer for

an explanation others to the scriptures all of us asking “Why?” to get an answer.

If we turn to the Psalms, the Bible’s own hymnbook, we will be reminded that God has not abandoned us but comes to give us

hope, courage, trust and faith“

Be gracious to me, Lord,” prays the sixth Psalm, “for I am languishing; O Lord, heal me, for my bones are shaking with ter-

ror.” “Why do you stand far off, O Lord?” asks the 10th Psalm plaintively. “Why do you hide yourself in time of trouble?”

And so it goes on: “How long, O Lord? Will you forget me for ever?” (Psalm 13). And, all the more terrifying because Jesus

himself quoted it in his agony on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Psalm 22).

In many ways we all feel helpless because we are living in isolation but in our helplessness, we can turn to God and finding

ourselves on His mercy ask God to rescue us and our whole world.

We can use this time of Covid-19 to turn back to God - the God who took our suffering into himself and went to the cross. I

think we have to understand that God feels our frustration, sorrow, loneliness and sheer inability to understand what is hap-

pening or why.

I truly believe that it is the very job of the Christian to give the answer about suffering—all suffering. Without the cross, and

even more so, without the resurrection, is a foolish and absurd thing.

As followers of Jesus we have the deepest most satisfying reason for why, a why that gathers up all the anxiety, all the hope-

lessness into an eternal hope. Because not only does God remind us that suffering is part of all life but God also reminds us of

his promises - that He will restore everything that we have lost, He will wipe away every tear, He will rebuild every tower

that was broken down—He himself will do it.

This message is desperately needed to be heard by people everywhere. Especially where people are having to drive their loved

ones to hospitals, kiss them good-bye, and sometimes never see them again. This message is the only message that reaches

past the loneliness, past the desperation, past the hopelessness and helplessness. And it can be said boldly, because it is true,

because Jesus, though he lamented and suffered himself, rose from the dead in his own body. My friends, turn to Him and

live.

You are always in my prayers.

Let us continue to pray for each other especially in the days and weeks ahead.

Fr. Andrew

April 5, 2020 - Palm Sunday

“As they were marching out, they came upon a man of Cyrene, Simon by name; this man

they pressed into service to carry his cross.” Matthew 27:32

The Lord calls us to love God and to love our neighbor. Every day we are

presented with opportunities to love our neighbor and help him “carry his

cross.” These opportunities aren’t usually big events, they are usually ordinary

occurrences like helping someone carry their groceries or holding the door open

for them. The key is putting the other person’s needs before our own and not

expecting anything in return.

Thank You For Your Continued Generosity!
