Dear Parishioners, Although the announcement weekend is the Sunday after Easter, I wanted to let you know that we will be conducting the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal and that we have scheduled the commitment weekend to be April 14/15.

It is important that you know the Church of Annunciation was given a special exception this year by the Archdiocese. Instead of receiving a 25% rebate for whatever is collected in the appeal, we will be receiving the entire amount collected, minus some minor administrative costs. This is a one-time exception due to some major projects that need to be done on our Church.

I requested the exception since I did not want to run two campaigns back to back (The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal and a Parish Campaign). That would have been too much of a burden on your generosity. The exception allows us to concentrate on the immediate needs of the Church of the Annunciation.

As we celebrate our 50th Anniversary, the Church is obviously showing its age. After much study, it was determined the main roof of the Church needs to be replaced. In addition, we are investigating the upgrading or replacement of our HVAC system in the Church. These two projects are estimated to cost around $300,000.

Not only is the Archdiocese working with us through the exception to the Archbishop’s Appeal, it has also identified a parish to assist us. St. Joan of Arc Parish in Aberdeen has committed their 25% rebate of the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal to the Church of the Annunciation for these special projects! We are so grateful for their generosity.

As we enter Holy Week and anticipate the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal in April, I ask that you prayerfully consider a sacrificial gift this year to the Archbishop’s Appeal. Even if you have already given to the Appeal, you can make an additional gift knowing that the money raised this year will come back to the Church of Annunciation for these special projects.

As always, Fr. Julio, Sister Susan and I appreciate all that you do for the Church of the Annunciation. Your special gift to the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal this year, will be a wonderful 50th Anniversary gift to our parish.

Sincerely,

Fr. Vincent Administrator

DID YOU KNOW ? Palm Sunday is the first day of Holy Week and the Sunday before Easter. It is the day we remember Jesus riding into Jerusalem on an ass (prophesied in the Old Testament). The color used for liturgical vestments is red, symbolizing the redemption in blood that Christ paid for the world. This year (according to the archdiocese of Baltimore website) the Chrism Mass will be celebrated on March 30 at 730 pm at the Cathedral. The Archbishop will bless three oils: the oil of catechumens, the oil of the sick and holy chrism (a mixture of olive oil and balsam) which will be used in the administration of the sacraments. (Baptism, Confirmation, Anointing of the Sick and Ordination to the priesthood). Many priests attend this Mass to demonstrate their unity with their Archbishop. Lent ends on Wednesday and the Triduum begins with evening Mass of the Last Supper on Holy Thursday. We commemorate the establishment of the Eucharist (this is my body, my blood) and of the priesthood (do this in memory of me). On Good Friday we commemorate the Passion by reading from the gospel of John, pray an extended Prayer of the Faithful and receive Holy Communion using hosts which had been consecrated the evening before. On the day Christ died we do not celebrate Mass. On Holy Saturday we celebrate the Easter Vigil. (Some churches celebrate all night with extended readings, prayers and hymns). During the Vigil there is the lighting of the fire and blessing of holy water. Then the Mass of the Resurrection and reception into the church of catechumens who have been preparing for Baptism. The candidates are those who are baptized Christians of other churches and who have expressed a desire to worship in the Catholic faith. They will be confirmed and receive Holy Communion for the first time along with the newly baptized. Easter is the most important feast in the Catholic church. If Christ had not been resurrected, there would be no reason to believe in him. Please check the Jubilee bulletin board in the hall for more information.
