Computerized Irrigationcontinued from page 40

"Using a modem, our system will work withany system via a telephone line," Shoemakernotes. "It is not necessary to have a dedi-cated home line."

Motorola and Solar Wind now offer radiocommunication of commands. Motorola in-troduced its radio-operated system at the Ir-rigation Exposition in Fresno this past fall.Radio commands can provide a convenientway to test various FSTs while in the fieldor to send commands to FSTs from the cen-tral computer. This provides an alternativeto wires or telephone lines as well as ena-bling one person to test the system from thefield.

Computer prices are quite competitive. When you amortize the purchase price withthe water economies plus the labor savings,a computer can pay for itself within a fewyears. Exact figures are not available, butthose who sell them offer their own estimates.

The economics of computerizing an irri-gation system need to be closely evaluat-ed. With water costs going up, the user hasto determine in his own mind what the returnon his investment will be.

Over at Buckner/Royal Coach, Canterburyadmits, "A computer is considerably moreexpensive than a solid state controller - butthen, it does considerably more. At thepresent time, managers of residences andsmaller projects would probably not be in-terested because of the price.

Today, we may be addressing a small mar-ket in computerized irrigation, as comparedto controller sales - but the potential isdefinitely there.

Demand will rise in harness with water andpower costs. Indeed, it is already increas-ing at an extremely rapid rate.

While exact figures are not available, in1984 it was estimated that there were alreadysome 1,500 computer systems in use in thenation in both farming and turf, while world-

lrrl- Trol's dedicated computer irrigation con-troller was designed with economy in mind.

wide the number was well over 7,000. Sincethat time, sales have clearly accelerated.

It's easy to see why. As noted, people arebecoming more aware that water is a pre-cious commodity that is becoming very ex-pensive. There is a great need to learn howto conserve. While water shortages have hitour sunbelt states particularly hard, they haveoccurred on the East Coast as well.

The irrigation industry is catching up withthe technological world of the computer in-dustry. The computer is undoubtedly the bestautomatic system today. The main reasonfor its growing popularity is simple: It works.

The only limit on the uses of the computeris the imagination of the individual who isrunning it.

We all need to have visions of grandeur.Although some goals may not be immedi-ately feasible, still we must have them.Without goals and aspirations a business willnot grow.

That is why we must expand our personalhorizons to encompass the computer age, which is all around us and must be ac-knowledged. From giant mainframe com-puters to video games, the computer is every-where. If we put this valuable tool to our owngood uses, the end result will be conserva-tion of vital natural resources and easier, moreaccurate water management, which can leadto greater savings or greater profits.

Don't miss the boat. More and more of usare climbing aboard. Using a word proces-sor, this article was input into-a computer.

That's why TOROwas a key performerat Munich, Montrealand Los AngelesStadiums that hosted three of the last fourOlympic Games chose Toro 640 sprinkler headsfor the vital task of irrigation when the eyes of theworld were focused on their turf. No wonder! Taro640s are safe, with a very small 214-inch exposedsurface. And they install Y2-inchbelow grade. They pop up 2%" for efficient watering, then fullyretract with heavy duty stainless steel springs. Totop it all, these superior sprinklers are backed byToro's 5-year warranty. Oh, about the fourthOlympic site, Moscow? Well, we really don'tknow, but we'd be willing to bet that the Russianswish they had invented the Taro 640! Taro, theleader in sports field and large turf irrigationproducts.

The addition includes a second 18-hole"Stadium Golf" course and a 35,000 squarefoot clubhouse, to bring the value of thePrestancia club to $14.5 million. Golf coursearchitect Ron Garl told sports TURF Princewas selected from a group of four qualifiedcontractors. Edward Connor, vice presidentand general manager of Classic Golf CourseBuilders, a Prince subsidiary, will direct con-struction of the addition. Connor, a civil en-gineer, has been involved in the construc-tion of the Jack Nicklaus-designed BearsPaw Club in Naples, FL; the Mission HillsCountry Club in Rancho Mirage, CA,designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay;the Singletree Country Club in Vail, CO; TheGreenbriar in White Sulfur Springs, WV;Firestone Country Club in Akron, OH; and

the new Number 7 course at Pinehurst inPinehurst, NC.

The new course at Prestancia is the brain-child of PGA Tour commissioner Deane Be-man. The "Stadium Golf" design will entailthe addition of more than one million cu-bic yards of earth, says Garl. There will beunobstructed views for thousands of tour-nament spectators provided by earthenmounds and natural amphitheaters on vir-tually every hole.

In an unusual construction technique, separate crews will work the two nines atthe same time to have the course playa-ble by January 1987. Prince Contracting willdo the grading. Its subsidiaries, Classic GolfCourse Builders and Classic Irrigation, willfinish the job. Suppliers to the project in-clude Toro Irrigation, Pumping Systems, Inc.,Auto-Flow, Southern Turf Nurseries, andWesco-Zaun.

OUTDOOR POWER EXPOKEEPS ON GROWING

Six months before its July 28 show date, the International Lawn, Garden & PowerEquipment Exposition already has more ex-hibitors signed up than last year. Consideringthat the show is only entering its third yearand already has more than 400 companiesexhibiting, the Expo is rapidly becoming anindustry benchmark.

Despite a change in show management, the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Centerremains the show site and the 70-memberOutdoor Power Equipment Institute remainsthe show sponsor. The event will be heldJuly 28-30 in Louisville, KY.

The Expo emerged as a splinter showfrom the various national hardware andgarden shows. The mower, engine and lawncare equipment manufacturers felt over-shadowed by lawn furniture and gas grills. They wanted a show where they coulddemonstrate their equipment and deal faceto face with distributors. More than 230,000square feet of convention center and fouracres of field will be utilized this summer. The Expo is expected to make the list ofthe ten largest trade shows in the nationthis year.

Although it is intended only as a showfor distributors of retail and commercialequipment, each year a few more end userscan be found trying out the equipment be-fore it even reaches their dealer's showroom.

Colorite, the nation's largest manufacturerof garden hose and a new exhibitor, reportsa recent poll of its buyers and merchandisersindicated many were attending the show."The bottom line is that we want to be whereour buyers are to present our products andprograms and answer their questions," saysColorite vice president Ray Mistretta.

The Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center(KFEC) decided this winter to phase out itsexposition development department whichran the Expo.

OHIO GCSAA CONSIDERSSPORTS TURF AID

The Northern Ohio Chapter of the GolfCourse Superintendents Association ofAmerica is considering a sports turf aid pro-gram similar to one established by the Great-er Washington, D.C., chapter recently. Theproposal, made by Frank Dobie of SharonCountry Club, Sharon, OH, calls for a volun-tary program where superintendents offerassistance to school administrators with ath-letic fields.

Dobie stated in the Chapter newsletter,"I see this as a golden opportunity for usto be recognized by the general public forour professional expertise and at the sametime advance the quality of turf for our youngathletes. Everyone wins.

"The approach will be to first make every-one aware that we do have an alternativeto poorly constructed and ill-maintainedsports turf surfaces that contribute to ma-ny athletic injuries. Secondly, we can pro-vide the direction through which these fieldscan be improved. This is where we, as golfcourse superintendents, can enter the pic-ture. With our individual experience in con-struction and maintenance, we are natur-als to consult with our own local schoolsystems."

Dobie is asking the chapter membershipto endorse the project and to volunteer theirtime and talents to a school system, eitherdirectly or through the association.

The MT/Comboplane enables sports turfmanagers to scrape, scarify, level and fin-ish with one unit. Designed for three-pointhitch tractors, the unit leaves a fine, smoothgrade on virtually any type of soil.

The Comboplane consists of a frontscraper with side soil retainers that controlsgrade. Behind the scraper is an hydraulically-controlled scarifier to penetrate and lossensoil. Following the scarifier are three plan-ning beams for leveling. The final finishingattachments are optional.

Made of heavy gauge steel, the com-boplanes come in three widths, 5, 61/2 and8-feet. THIN DRAIN FOR TURF

flEXIBLE?OLY$:l)'RENE ...COrlE

A narrow two-inch-wide trench is all thatis needed to install Turf Drain, a prefabri-cated composite drainage line for inade-quately drained turf areas. Developed bytwo engineers as a replacement for Frenchdrains, the thin polystyrene core is surround-ed by a geotextile fabric. Hydrostatic pres-sure forces water through the filter fabricinto the void created by the waffle-like plasticform. As long as the line is provided a onepercent slope, the silt-free water flows freelyto the outlet point.

Gravel backfill is not required; sand ornative soil is used to backfill the narrowtrenches. Turf will grow back over the two-inch surface cut without the need for sod-ding. This enables a turf manager to cor-

rect drainage problems with the least dis-ruption to the turf and with less labor.TURF DRAINAGE CO. OF AMERICACircle 134 on Postage Free Card

The Scanex eliminates the need to manu-ally calculate evapotranspiration and precipi-tation rates and the other guesswork as-sociated with some control systems. It al-so prevents irrigation during rail") unlessindicated by the sensors.
