The Republic of Palau’s National Congress is knownas the Olbiil Era Kelulau (OEK), which means “Houseof Whispered Decisions.” The Congress consists oftwo houses which sit for four-year terms. The Houseof Delegates has 16 members, one from each state.The Senate has 13 members selected in a nationwideelection.

The Executive Branch of the government of Palauconsists of the President, the Vice President, and theCouncil of Chiefs.Assisting the top executives are thecabinet ministers and their supporting staff. The VicePresident serves as one of the ministers.

The Council of Chiefs is composed of onetraditional chief from each of the Republic’s states. TheCouncil advises the President on matters concerningtraditional laws, customs and their relationship to theConstitution and the laws of Palau.

The Constitution of the Republic of Palau vestsnal judicial power in the Supreme Court. Below

the Supreme Court is the National Court. TheConstitutional Government of Palau was establishedin 1981.
