HISTORY
The Palau de la Música Catalana
(Palace of Catalan Music) is a
concert hall designed in the Catalan
modernist style by the architect
“Lluís Domènech iMontaner”.
It was built in Barcelona, Catalonia,
Spain, between 1905 and 1908. a
choral society founded in 1891
that was a leading force in the
Catalan cultural movement that
came to be known as the Renaissance.
It was inaugurated February 9,
1908. The Palau won the architect
an award from the Barcelona City
Council in 1909, given to the best
building built during the previous
year. Between 1982 and 1989, the
building underwent extensive
restoration, remodeling, and
extension under the direction of
architects.
LLUÍS MILLET’S ROOMIt’s located on the first floor, opposite the concert
hall, dedicated to Millet the musician and the
founder of the Orfeo Català.
CONCERT HALL
It has windows on both sides, seats for 2049 people,
columns decorated with mosaics of colors as the
ceiling with red roses and white glazed ceramic.
In the center of the ceiling there’s the large skylight
or light conducted by Anthony Rigalt and Blanch.
Above the grandstand there’s two
Pegàssos, sculpted by Eusebi Arnau,
some people relate it to the climb
power of the music.
THE SETTINGThere are eighteen Nouveau muses in
a mosaic and in relief from the waist.
Under a collection of irregular red
canvas and above it there’s the organ.
At the center stage, between the muses, he ordered
to set Domènech i Muntaner.
ORGANThe acquisition of the organ was in the German Walcker,Ludwigsburg, and was conducted in 1908. In 2003 it was againrestored thanks to contributions from individuals and privatecompanies.
OUTSIDESide facade
Situated in the most High Street Sant Pere, the only
access until 1989, the corner of Carrer Amadu Vives,
where there is a sculpture represented St. George, under
a female figure in the center surrounded by a group
characters representing sailors, farmers, the elderly and
children. On the front there are large arches with
columns and red brick ceramic. At the first floor there is
a balcony with fourteen columns,
covered with mosaics, all with different design, the
second floor columns on the busts of musicians, from
left to right are Palestrina, Bach and Beethoven,
Wagner.
At the top of the central facade there is a large
mosaic, symbolizing the flag of the orphans and
Antonio Maria Gallissà a queen in the center chairing
a party with a philosophy.
Main facade
The facade was made by Domenech i Montaner. The architect
built a yard about three meters wide that was bound to the
church, built with the wealth of materials and design, building
brick red, wrought iron railings, carved cornices and capitals and
with stained glass colors as in the rest of the building. On the
left side of the facade is the building of services performed by
architects Oscar Tusquets Carles Diaz and Lluis Clotet tower
with a sculpted base,it is also the entrance of artists.
On the right side is a staircase on the sculpture dedicated
to Luís Millet, Jassans made by the sculptor, made in 1991,
and the entrance to the Palace restaurant. The entire central
facade has been restored covered by another new glass
screen with the name of the building Palace of Catalan Music
recorded at the entrances.
