The Client

Our client is one of the leading companies in the global energy market. Headquartered in the UK and active in over 25 countries, it operates in Exploration and Production, Liquefied Natural Gas, Transmission and Distribution and Power.

Objective

The initial objective for the Palantir consultants was to assist the client team on both an approval to invest paper and a business plan submission.

Following the completion of these tasks, the consultants assisted the asset team in the development of decision support packages and provided support to the short, mid, and long-term corporate planning process.

The consultants were required to operate at very short notice in various parts of the organisation where commercial expertise was in high demand and immediate results were required.

Palantir’s Role

Palantir started working with the client in 2004 and worked on the Kazakhstan operations on a continuous basis for over four years. During the four years, Palantir consultants have assisted engineers, geoscientists and accountants in economic analyses.

Key activities of Palantir consultants during this project included:

• Decision analysis: i) Project framing ii) Screening of business opportunities iii) Identification of key risk and value drivers iv) Stakeholder analyses

• Designing fit-for-purpose probabilistic economic models: i) Simulation of price, cost and reserves uncertainties ii) Generation of spider charts, tornado diagrams and waterfall charts

• Developing economic analysis and presentations for the corporate reporting cycle: i) Consolidating production data and investment requirements ii) Reporting short, mid, and long-term asset performance iii) Reserve submissions.

Benefit to the Client

The consultants were able to provide immediate assistance to the economics teams on two specific tasks; an approval to invest paper and a business plan submission. The requirements changed very quickly due to the complexity and potential of the asset. Consequently, the short term assignment quickly grew into a full-time economic lead role, which included working closely with the geologists, geophysicists, engineers and commercial group while training new economists in both the main and satellite office.

The broad and in-depth experience of Palantir consultants enabled them to hit the ground running, providing immediate benefits to the client. The consultants provided an instant solution to fill the position for an experience economics lead manager and provided continued support, independent advice and expertise to the client, resulting in a relationship which we maintain today.
