DEAR VISITOR,

Józsefváros is a nearly forgotten jewel-box of Budapest. Besides the fact that this district gives home to most of the universities of the Hungarian capital, the streets of the so-called ‘Palace Quarter’ are lined with exciting buildings and ornamented palaces. This area once was the scene for the lively cultural life of the Pest side of the city. We make all our efforts to ensure that this district would regain its glory. Józsefváros has gained new momentum in the recent years. Every quarter of a year brought new developments. One of the major investments last year was the implementation of the “Downtown of Europe” Programme. The project with a nearly 2-billion HUF budget ensured the reconstruction of four streets, such as Pál Gyulai street, Kôfaragó street, Mária street and Horánszky street, as well as Guten-berg square. The Student and Business Development Centre called “H13”, which used to function as a residential building, was also completed; it now operates as an incubator for young career starters and small businesses. When the “Downtown of Europe” Programme was completed, we knew that we had to proceed on the road we are headed, and not only because during the first phase we undertook the responsibility to sustain the values we had generated. We work hard to proceed with the developments in the second phase, namely to reconstruct the streets and squares of the Palace Quarter, and to renew the residential buildings – while preserving the architectural heritage we have – and help the players of the local market as well as to increase the economic competitiveness of the district. However, Józsefváros can only become a reconstructed university town – further to developments and investments – if its dwellers find living there enjoyable. We try to steal back the old glory of Józsefváros by bringing culture in the limelight. 3 months, 15 locations, 250 programmes. This means that for almost every summer day, we have organised a concert, exhibition, a theatre performance or a literature-themed stroll. This is what this publication is all about.

All children and child-hearted grown-ups are invited to the centre of a magical forest, where the story comes live with the help of music, puppets and, naturally, the children. Each of the musicalinstruments represent one of the story’s characters, whose adventures can also be modified by ideas given by children. We walk along the road hearing children’s songs, folk songs, and melodised poems of contemporary poets, and by the end of the road, hopefully we will have found some new band members among the children, who join in playing music with rattles, finger cymbals and cymbals. The band always generates carnival-like atmospheres at their concerts full of energy.

However, during the concerts it turns out that the mathematical thinking of Renaissance Era composers and the music of the representatives of 21th century jazz, interlaced with fixed structures and improvisations may not be so far away from each other. He has made a nice show on the basis of thepopular contemporary book series titled ”The Adventures of Pettson and Findus”,where you can get to see the everyday lives of the chatty cat and his introvert,but warm-hearted keeper by involving the children in the story. 12:00 pm Picaro Theatrical Group: Maszmók Afrikában [Maszmok in Africa] – National Museum Garden Kokoro, the small crocodile wanders away from home and meets the animals of the savannah, and in the end, he really wants to get back home … The magical world of the performance is ensured by the African music played live by authentic African instruments. PERFORMANCES BY GYPSY MUSICIANS FROM JÓZSEFVÁROS The most interesting summer events of the ”Józsefváros-ZeneVáros-ZeneNyár”[Józsefváros–Musical Town–Musical Summer] programme are the Performances by Gypsy Musicians from Józsefváros intiated and financed by the Budapest Municipality ofJózsefváros, which are organised for the first time at 7 locations on the squares and restaurants of the district, in an organised manner. The goal is to restore place rightfully acclaimed reputation Gypsy music as a spiritual and cultural value. Another novelty is that participants of the programmes may request traditional Hungarian songs, operetta songs, film soundtracks/scores and waltz songs for themselves or for their beloved “directly” on the given spot. Live request shows can be heard at all 7 locations, and the magical atmosphere is ensured by musicians playing virtuosic violin solos. This will provide totally unique features for the audience present. The musicians will amaze Józsefváros by their wonderful musical performances, and unique sounds. The old tunes of different styles and Gypsy music played in this form represent a new sound on the musical palette. The repertoire of the orchestra includes traditional Hungarian recruiting music “verbunkos”, evergreen operettas, film scores, waltzes, famous traditional Hungar-ian songs and world music as well. The performing art of the orchestra is characterised by improvisation, enriching the tunes by instrumental assistance, and the stylised interpreta-tion of folksy tunes. Their varied music expresses elementary feelings. Several musicians play in complete unison without sheet music. Meritorious Artist Lajos Kathy-Horváth, the notable violin player leads this famous orchestra, the music of which can be listened to at the following locations and squares within Józsefváros:

PALOTA PIKNIK ASSOCIATION

The Association organises 5 events in the area of the Palace Quarter. The clear goal of the events is to popularise the values, traditions and history of the Quarter in a broader circle, and to continue or launch new traditions connected to the area. JÓZSEFVÁROS GALLERY AND EVENTS CENTRE The gallery is well-known and well-established by artists, and it is located in the heart of District 8, at 70 József Boulevard. Its visitors come from all over the city, but some of the people living in the district also regularly follow the current events of the place. The main aim of the Gallery is to remain the expressive location of contemporaryfine-art based on traditional values – with a selection of exhibitors, and culturalprogrammes mixing different artistic genres. The Gallery and Events Centre also undertakes a major role in public education tasks. On one hand, it is a site for cultural programmes; on the other hand, it is the place where cultural events of the district ”come together” – accordingly, it is an organising agency and an information base as well. Opportunities are provided for community life, great experiences, for getting toknow Hungarian culture and values, developing creativity, and pleasantly spending leisure time. The Józsefváros Gallery is a cultural institute financed by the municipality, therefore it also organises the celebrations, branch events and awards ceremonies requested by the municipality. THE GOAL IS TO CONTINUE THE ”DOWNTOWN OF EUROPE” PROGRAMME

T H E P A S T

The Downtown of Europe Programme was implemented in a two-year period, as a 2-million HUF development. The goal of the Programme was to ensure thatPalace Quarters, which is known to be the cultural centre of Budapest, would regain its old glory, and the dwellers of the district and the university students studying there could get back public places for use. The implementation of the Programme was supported by the European Union with HUF 900 million, in the framework of the New Hungary Development Plan Central Hungary Operational Programme. The necessary own contribution of HUF 760 million was provided by the Budapes Municipality of Józsefváros. In the course of the developments, nearly two thousand square meters of pedestrian streets and more than ten thousand square meters of streets with limited vehicle access were established at Gyulai Pál, Kôfaragó, Mária and Horánszky streets, as well as at Gutenberg square. Apart from road constructions, more than 50 saplings and 30 bicycle storage fi xtures were planted/placed in the Pa-lace Quarter with the aim of increasing green areas and protecting the environment. The Student and Business Development Centre called “H13”, which used to function as a residential building, was also completed; it now operates as an incubator for young career starters and small businesses.

At the time of the completion of the Downtown of Europa Programme, the success of the project was inevitable. According to questionnaire surveys, the district inhabitants were pleased to witness the implemented investments. Accordingly, it was beyond question for the administrative management of Józsefváros that the cultural economy development programme started needs to be continued. The municipality is currently working on fi nding sources for Phase 2 of Downtown of Europe Programme. According to the concept, certain project elements have already begun, such as a series of cultural programmes, the reconstruction of green public places, as well as a design contest for university students with the theme of reconstructing public locations. The area for the sample project is Pollack Mihály square, Gutenberg square and Bródy Sándor street connecting the two squares.The announcement of the winners and the awarding ceremony will take place on2 August 2013 at 2 p.m. at H13 Student and Business Development Centre.-10-

The administrative representing body of Józsefváros has accepted the concept that the strategic goals of Phase 2 should be set out along the logics of Phase 1 of the Downtown of Europe Programme. Accordingly - beside the high quality reconstruction of public areas - separate activity programmes would deal with increasing the touristic attractiveness of the city district, the reconstruction of the buildings preserving the districts identity, with assisting the local market players, as well as with increasing economic competitiveness.

The Palace Quarter is one of the sections of Józsefváros, directly neighbouring the downtown area of Pest. Taking Astoria as a starting point, the area is bordered by Rákó-czi Street, Nagykörút [Great Boulevard], Üllôi Road, Kálvin Square and Múzeum Boulevard. It used to be one of the fanciest quarters of Budapest.After the defeating end of the 1848–49 Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence, the area became populated with aristocrats and noblemen, who had lavish palaces and mansions built by the prominent architects of the era. This is where the name of the quarter is also originated from. In 1865, the House of Representatives of the Parliament held sessions in the quarter. Today, the quarter is the cultural and business driver of the district, and the target area of the Downtown of Europe Programme.
