2013 has been a whirlwind year for PEEC and our supporters. When the year began, the new nature center was little more than a line item in the county’s budget. As the year drew to a close, PEEC staff and board members were attending weekly meetings to talk about everything from exhibits to electrical outlets! Who knew that so many important decisions would rest on electrical outlets? All this, however, has been just a background hum that you might not have noticed. What you saw in 2013 was kids learning to hold and release birds in Bandelier, adults identifying new wildflowers, new hikers learning about the County’s many easily accessible trails, toddlers cooking up a storm in the mud kitchen, kids wading in the Jemez waters to do scientific monitoring, and people of all ages being transported underground (to Lechuguilla Cave), out of the country (to learn about exotic wildlife), and to the stars and planets (through the lens of a telescope). You saw PEEC fulfilling its mission of enriching people’s lives by strengthening their connections to nature. We couldn’t have done any of this without you. Our board gave us guidance, advice, and many tireless hours of volunteer service. Our staff worked together as a true team. Our volunteers did everything: shelve books, mount plants, garden, water, help with lessons, lead hikes, give talks, and generally fill in however needed. Our community partners worked with us to bring more value to everyone in Los Alamos, and our supporters provided the funds that made everything else possible. You have all enriched PEEC so much.
