Svein was born in Trondheim, Norway in 1946, with a Norwegian mother and a Dutch father. Svein’s father, Herman, was repatriated to Oslo as enforced labour for the German occupation of Norway, Working for the Dutch underground his parents fell in love in this most difficult background. Herman had to endure a tough few months post war at the Norwegian War Trials as did many Dutch underground heroes. He returned home to Amsterdam where Svein and his mother, Snefrid (translates to snowflake) joined him in late 1946.

The family soon grew with a brother Edward, and sister Sylvia. Living in the centre of Amsterdam on the famous Albert Cuyp Street Market Svein’s introduction to art began with visits, with his Dutch grandparents to the famous Rijksmuseum, home to Rembrandt’s Nightwatch, a very scary painting to the young Svein. With the tough post war times Herman took an opportunity to move to Geelong for a three year contract with World Services and Shell. A year later the Snefrid and children travelled out to Australia on an amazing 7 day flight, with a spectacular detour circling the pyramids, with an overnight stay in a palace in Calcutta, India and many other exotic places, an eye opener to the 7 year old Svein. Finally they joined their father in Geelong, a vastly different environment to European city life in Amsterdam. The family decided to stay in Australia after the 3 year contract, giving the children an Australian upbringing. These early experiences are ingrained in Svein with his considerable lifestyle changes over the years, i.e. Curacao, London, France, Noosa Heads and now Belgium.

Svein excelled in swimming and the arts throughout his school years with a tertiary education in Industrial Design and Art, but his rebellious nature came into play when he quit his course after three years coming up against the restrictions of course lecturers. A short time as a commercial graphic artist in Melbourne ensued, then, with a new bride he left arts behind turning to business and a new life managing the family enterprise in Curacao in the Dutch West Indies.

Life continued without painting, his focus being on business and family, until in the early nineties he returned to Victoria with Dianne his now wife, where his passion for painting was reignited. Call it a midlife crisis or a re-awakening, Svein found himself wanting to give painting his full attention. Following his intuition Svein left business behind and took up painting fulltime.

With Svein painting and Dianne working behind the scenes they moved from Melbourne to Brisbane before settling in Noosa Heads for seven years, until finally moving to Belgium where his studio is in the very heart of one of Europe’s most beautiful medieval cities, Flemish Brugge. Although not the usual expat destination Flanders is well known for some of the worlds largest private art collections and of course the world famous Flemish Primitives like Jan van Eyck known for the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb now hanging in St Bavo’s Cathedral, Ghent. Svein’s love of abstract began in his art studies and continues today with his major pieces being his bold textured and energetic abstract paintings. He has exhibited most recently in Paris with exhibitions from Soho NY to Hong Kong although now his main focus is his studio gallery with art lovers and collectors visiting him in Brugge or via his web site.
