Different Media to make easel paintings

Finger Painting AcrylicThe pigment used in finger painting

are pasty substances mixed with water and smeared on slick paper with fingers.

Many designs can be made by using different parts of the hands to smear the paint.

Watercolor

Water color pigments are mixed with water and applied to paper with brush.

The colors are transparent which means that the color beneath will show if you paint another color on top.

Poster Paint Or Gouache

Colors can be painted over one another and those underneath do not show through.

Tempera

Usually refers to pigments that have been mixed with egg yolk and with water or oil.

Oil Painting

Made by mixing pigments with oil to form a thick substance.

They are often applied to canvas material which have been stretched tight over a frame or board and coated with white paint.

Acrylic

This is called plastic paints, water-based, quick drying, durable and adaptable to any surface.

They are cheaper and do not discolor over the years as oil paints do.

Pastels

These pigments are molded into sticks similar to chalk.

The colors once applied smudges easily and must be protected by a fixative to let pigments in place.

Common Techniques in Painting

Wash Rendering

Commonly done using water color. The color should be laid down on

damp paper in a free and relaxed manner.

Dry brush Rendering

Achieved by wiping off paint from the brush and what is left can be dragged to make parallel lines.

Splattering

The artist’s knife or finger is dragged across the blade of toothbrush loaded with paint.

Crayon Rubbing

This techniques uses wax to rub and obtain design from certain textures like leaf.

Encaustic

Uses melted wax and pigment then painted on a warm wooden surface. When the painting is completed, the surface is heated again to fuse the colors to each other on the wood.

Resist

Uses wax and water-based pigments. The design is drawn by wax then

applied with a wash of acrylic to reveal the design and composition.

Alla Prima

Described as direct painting in which pigment is laid directly on the surface without any under painting.
