Richie McCaw: Chasing Great

By Arlo Feeney

I am Arlo and I play young Richie McCaw in the movie

Chasing Great. Working in this amazing acting

environment, has been (and will continue to be) an

amazing experience for me! One day I woke up, got out

of bed and dawdled over to the breakfast table. I found myself looking at my

dad reading the newspaper. He said; “Arlo, there’s a movie coming out about

Richie McCaw!”

I replied, “Cool dad! I love Richie!”

Then he replied, “And you’re going to audition for the part of young Richie!”

I leaped up into the air, alarmed at this shocking and amazing news! So many

thoughts and emotions went through my head in those five seconds! Overjoyed,

nervous, and excited! I didn’t know what to say! Dad told me to get working for

my audition right away! Finally the audition day came! I went in the room,

introduced myself, tackled a stunt man and got congratulated! Afterwards, my

dad drove us back home. A few weeks later we got emailed the results. I had

won! I had got the part! Dad and I went out for dinner to celebrate!

The next few months, I was as nervous as a pig in a bacon factory! Then the

shooting dates finally came! My heart was beating as fast as a hummingbird on

steroids! The director congratulated me for my success, and welcomed me to

the set. But everybody there was very nice and I soon relaxed. After filming

dates, I had to wait a long, painful six months. Then on the 31 August, I went to

the premier! The film was really cool! The Richie McCaw movie has been a

great experience and I hope to do something like it again.

From Arlo.

Special thanks to Elijah from 5G for helping on some similes.

Success at Tournament of Minds (TOM) 2016

On Saturday 3 September four teams of year five and six children competed at Albany Junior High School for the

Tournament of Minds Regional Shield. The children were given only six weeks to work together as a team on a long term

challenge of their choice. Three of our teams selected the language literature challenge while one team opted for the

social sciences challenge. The challenges tested their ability to work together, their problem solving skills, creativity and

presentation skills. While preparing for their long term challenge the children were also practicing for their teamwork skills

for a four minute spontaneous challenge. During this challenge they were awarded points for their ability to answer the

question, creativity of their answers as well as their teamwork skills.

On the day nerves were high and it was lovely to see all four teams supporting each other in their presentations. In all

teams the children were highly organised and had made innovative costumes and props. The presentations from all

schools were of a very high calibre and the competition was intense. It was fantastic to see such very talented

performers.

At the end of a long day it was time for prize giving and the results we had all been waiting for. All four teams should be

commended for their hard work and commitment over the past six weeks. Their behaviour and team spirit on the day was

impeccable and they should all be very proud of what they achieved.

Congratulations to Campbells Bay team one - Ella Simonsen, William Hays, Paco Poon, Sasha Roberts, Hanneke

Hectors, Miriam Sands and Jessica Han who received honours in the Language Literature Challenge.

A huge congratulations to team four of Sam Rea-Rankin, Jamie Hanton, Taylor Daji, Edison Yang, Elliott Nicholson,

Jayhunn Seo and Rowan Welsh who won the Social Sciences Challenge. This team will have the opportunity to compete

in the National Finals in Wellington a few weeks’ time.

Thank you to all the parents that came to support on the day. Also special thanks to Peter Feeney and Megan Simpson

who helped judge the Year 9 and 10 Spontaneous Challenges.

Oliver Woodcock’s Big Weekend!

On Friday 26 August after school, we drove down to Tauranga so that Oliver could take part in the Steven Adams

Basketball camp on the Saturday.

He was really excited to get stuck in to learn and play with 400 other basketball fans aged 7-17 and be coached by Tall

Blacks, Breakers, OKC Thunder coaches and players from those teams too.

He got a little star struck when Steven Adams came over to help out with his group but the coaches saw that he

was sat on the sides watching all the other kids get hi-5’s so they took him over to Steven and he gave him a hi-5.

At lunch time, he got his photo taken with Andre Roberson and was just buzzing from it all!

Dad is a HUGE basketball fan and got to stay the full day and watch and I think he was pretty star struck too.
