Landscaping CommitteeA creative group of passionate gardeners works in cooperation with park staff to develop new ideas and solve challenges in the parks’ landscapes. The group assists in the planning process of many projects, and creatively determines the colors and plants for

the theme gardens in Krider Garden Park as well as the iconic light pole flower baskets throughout town. The group also gets their hands dirty by helping to plant the Quilt Garden and volunteering throughout the year. members of the Landscaping committee bring different skills, styles, and knowledge to ‘making Life Better’ and beautiful in middlebury. contact the Park Office at 825.3283 if you have talents and time to share!

August 29th 10 am - 2pmcome to riverfest to experience the river! Hikes will be led in the river so visitors can feel the current of the cool water that supports a healthy trout population. Guides will show important attributes of the river and discuss the dynamics and areas that have been modified to improve habitat. Participants are encouraged to wear clothes and shoes appropriate for getting wet. Some water shoes will be available to wear. children must be accompanied by an adult.

This year’s Trails celebration, held July 11th at the newly-named Trestle Terrace park (behind Krider Gardens), was a fun-filled evening of music, games, raffles, great food, and friends coming together. The funds raised will help pay for the ridge run Trail, which will add 1.5 miles to the middlebury trails system.

Have you seen popular historical names such as LaSalle, chief Five medals, or Pokagon? Have you heard of atlatls, celts, and gorgets? Elkhart county Historical museum explains our past and connects us to nature through the current exhibit ‘Elkhart County’s First 20,000 Years’. The interactive exhibit starts with fossils from 400 million years ago when Indiana was under a shallow sea.

moving forward, Indiana was covered in glaciers. As the glaciers retreated, Paleo Indians lived in small family groups, moving, hunting, and fishing. In the exhibit, pick up an atlatl, or a hunting tool men used to kill large animals. On display is a mammoth tusk found right here in middlebury as well as original artwork of the creature.

during the Archaic period, people traveled shorter distances and lived in semi-permanent and seasonal villages. ceremonial objects and trade goods were typical. Forests dominated the area with rabbits, squirrels, elk, black bears, deer, and bison: popular animals for hunting. Feel furs in the exhibit and see artifacts from this time period.

The woodland people made pottery to store items, and decorative items such as celts and gorgets. These agricultural people used companion planting to grow the three sisters: corn, squash, and beans.

Trading posts were established for trading metal pots, hatchets, knives, mirrors, and wool blankets for furs. Explore a trading post in the exhibit. The miami and Potawatomi were the main groups in Elkhart county. The exhibit ends, looking at the challenges native groups met as many were pushed out of the area. Leopold Pokagon led a group that resisted removal and legally purchased land, coexisting with others in the area. Today they are known as the Pokagon Band of the Potawatomi.

I was impressed by the sense of story weaving the past into the present. we were able to touch artifacts, read quotes, and view original artwork. The story has a long past, yet directly connected me to our local and natural history. Patrick mcGuire, curator of education, said, “In the end, we present people – even those who lived over 10,000 years ago – as living in a complex, sophisticated society.”

child and Parent Services of Elkhart county (cAPS) stands for ‘Happy Kids and Healthy Families’, and has a mission to ensure that every child lives a life free from abuse and neglect. They rely upon education, advocacy, and intervention with families and the community to support safe, stable, nurturing relationships.

Their Vines, Steins, & Stills fundraiser auction took place in June with over 500 supporters, raising about a third of the yearly operating budget. The first week of November brings the annual Lifesaver Breakfast. “For that event, we invite a few hundred community and potential partners to join us for breakfast and listen to some folks talk about how our programming leads to success for families and happier, healthier childhood experiences for Elkhart county children,” says Andrew Hershberger, communications and Brand manager.

“Kelly and Karen rose are two of our most generous and thoughtful supporters and have been for a long time,” Hershberger continues. “In the early 1990s, when cAPS was in need of a bigger facility, it was the generosity of the rose family that allowed us to move into the former Aux chandelles school for children with disabilities run by AdEc.

At that point, the building was named the Joy rose center in honor of Kelly rose's mother.” This is their main office in Elkhart.

working with more than 5,000 children, parents, guardians, teachers, professionals, students, and others each year, cAPS educates about parenting methods to increase harmony among families, teaches adults and children to recognize abuse and tell someone so it can be stopped, advocates for children in the court system to ensure the best possible outcomes, and conducts forensic interviews with victims of abuse and other crimes to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“Our agency's effectiveness in preventing child abuse and strengthening families comes from being able to bring so many different services under the same umbrella and refer people to the community resources that will help them the most,” says Hershberger. “we are lucky to be part of such a generous and caring community.”

A few years ago, I received a phone call asking if I would be interested in learning more about the Boys & Girls club in middlebury for potential board involvement. Although I agreed to meet, I was hesitant. I work many hours in my job, sit in many meetings, and really enjoy what ‘margin’ I have in my days. But, I went to learn more; it seemed polite.

Today, I serve as board president and couldnot be more excited about the opportunities the club is offering the kids in our community! I’m proud of the standard of excellence offered and proud of our kids!

Some preconceived ideas caused my initial hesitation. I thought the club was primarily after-school childcare for ‘troubled kids’. I assumed parents paid a significant fee for their kids to have a place to go after school and that funding came through these fees.

Instead, I learned that the club is much more. It offers opportunities including robotics, athletics, games room, learning center, center for the arts, garden club, teen center,

leadership training – the list goes on! The cost is only $15 per school year for each kid to attend every day, and is for ALL

kids. Our mission states that it is a great place for the kids who need us most to be inspired and empowered

to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Finally, the club is

primarily funded through contributions from people and businesses in the community, like you.

I share this because I’m guessing many in the middlebury community don’t fully

understand what happens in that building that is bursting at the seams. To see kids be

recognized, encouraged, and awarded is so critical for their futures!

celebrating pete and Jeanne Fore Parade Marshals of the 2015 Middlebury Summer FestivalPete and Jeanne Fore have lived in middlebury for fifty years. They’ve been married to each other for 24 years and, between the two of them, they share seven children, nine grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.

Pete retired from coachmen in 1992 and Jeanne retired from Jayco in 2001.

The Fores started an antique shop in 1994. Jeanne shared that this was a wonderful experience for them as they met people from all over the country. Jeanne’s favorite memories of having the shop were the buying trips, and Pete fondly remembers his interactions with the customers.

Shortly after retirement, Pete became involved in helping bring the Boys and Girls club to middlebury. From 2006 to 2009, Jeanne, with Pete’s help, became involved in the club’s annual dinner auctions. The Fores were also active in bringing the Fall Festival to downtown middlebury. They have been involved with the middlebury walk for a cure and have been recipients of the middlebury chamber of commerce’s Volunteer of the Year award.

Pete and Jeanne are the originators of the Traveling Lamp of Hope program which provides encouragement for people undergoing cancer treatment. The lamps are made from bases from the 1930s which Pete restores, and topped with pink shades which, when lit, display the middlebury-specific cancer logo. The hope is that when people light the lamp, they know that others in middlebury are praying for them. when people reach the remission stage, the lamp then ‘travels on’ to the next person who is facing cancer treatment.

Thank you, Pete and Jeanne, and congratulations as we honor you as our Summer Festival parade marshals this year!

helicopter golf Ball drop at essenhaus to raise Funds for the Middlebury community Food pantryJoin us on August 6 at 7:30 pm for the second annual middlebury community Food Pantry Helicopter Golf Ball drop. The event will take place on the grounds of the Essenhaus during their weekly Thursday evening classic car cruise-In.

If your dropped ball is a hole-in-one, you win the $1000 grand prize. The ball closest to the hole wins $500 (unless you win the hole-in-one prize), and the second closest to the hole wins $250. winners need not be present to win. The remainder of the money goes to help support the middlebury community Food Pantry relocation project.

Bob and Melissa Hooley have lived in Middlebury for nine years, and had never really had much interest in motor sports. Six-year-old Evan, recent Kindergarten graduate, is a different story. “Evan started showing a strong interest in racing right around the time he started talking,” says his father, Bob. “He always wanted to race, whether it was up the stairs before bedtime or to the front door after a trip out. when we would flip the channel on TV, he always wanted to stop if a NAScAr or Indy car race was on.”

It seems young Hooley was obsessed! At Halloween, he

would dress as race car drivers. He would ask for die cast NAScArs and hot rods for birthdays. “As his interest grew with age, we realized it was not going away,” Bob says. “we started researching how stock car racers got started, and that’s how we found out about quarter midget racing.”

many professional stock car drivers began driving quarter midgets very young. while they cannot race competitively until age five, they can start racing at a sanctioned QmA (Quarter midget Association) or USAc (United States Auto club) track at a mere four and a half years old.

“There are a lot of rules and restrictions that must be followed, and many safety requirements,” Evan’s father explains. “The drivers are equipped with 5 point safety harnesses, roll cages, SFI rated helmets, fire suits, and gloves, and have instructors who teach them safe driving practices as rookies and as they progress.

“Every kid, no matter how old they are, has to start in the rookie class, with a red restrictor plate which reduces the amount of airflow through the carburetor, thus reducing

horsepower. As drivers advance and progress, they move up in classes and can race unrestricted cars and bigger engine classes.”

dipping their toes into the ‘racing waters’, the Hooleys took Evan to a Try-a-ride event in Kalamazoo where kids are equipped with safety gear and get a chance to drive a quarter midget around the track. Evan fell in love. They sat him down afterward and asked if he wanted to make a commitment to this, and he did. They set a goal of getting a car and joining the club the following year. “Evan sold lemonade, did chores, saved birthday and christmas money, and was able to invest in and have ownership in his own car and trailer. By having him save up, we felt he would have more appreciation for it, and it helped him with setting a goal and working hard. It took some time and effort, but we were able to get the car, trailer, and all the equipment before the season started this year.”

Kalamazoo was the closest club and was part of the USAc, so, for a $100 fee, the Hooleys joined. Being a member allows them to race at other USAc tracks across the country. There is also a club membership fee, and you have to have your own car to race. “There are a lot of up-front costs involved with getting a car and trailer to get it to the track each week, plus maintenance costs. many kids find sponsors who help offset some of the costs involved.”

The Little Kalamazoo Speedway is a 1/20 mile circular track next to the regular Kalamazoo Speedway, about 50 minutes north of middlebury on US 131. Evan’s brother Lucas goes off and plays with kids his age (four) and Evan will play football with the other drivers between heat races. Kids have a blast all day long. “Being on the track is a family affair, and the track environment is very family friendly,” says Bob. “The

Evan himself chimes in, saying, “One of the coolest things about racing quarter midgets is the trophies you get, and it’s fun racing and going fast just like in NAScAr! meeting new people and making friends is awesome.”

He has some advice for other kids his age who might be interested in quarter midget racing: “don’t be scared; you'll have fun. It’s really not like anything else. Listen to your

instructor and know your flags and go as fast as you can. The kids are really cool and we have a lot of fun at Kalamazoo.”

were there fears? Of course! No parent sticks their kid in a car and doesn’t have a few qualms! “At first, we were unsure about everything – the costs involved and the safety aspect – but so much goes into the safety of the kids, and Evan has really worked hard to help make his dream a reality. we are very proud of him, and love to see him shine. when he’s at the race track, he feels at home. He is comfortable making new friends and opening up to other kids. melissa, Evan’s mom, has really seen him gain confidence in himself through the race day events and loves watching him interact with different kids at the track.”

There is a Try-a-ride event coming up at Little Kalamazoo Speedway on September 20th, and the Hooleys encourage you to take your child and talk to some of the families at the event.

For us, Middlebury is home. For 138 visitors from Australia and New Zealand, Middlebury is a vacation. A destination.

Homegrown and local RV manufacturer Jayco recently hosted executives from Jayco-Australia to our Northern Indiana town as part of the

partners from down under’s 40th anniversary celebration. The visitors started in Napa Valley and ended in New York city, with middlebury sandwiched between the two. wilbur Bontrager, Jayco’s chairman of the Board, said that leaders

from Jayco-Australia visit our town often; some even consider middlebury a second home.

“middlebury is not a completely strange place to them,” said Bontrager. “Every time I’m with them, they talk kindly of middlebury and the sheer beauty we have here. They love the quaintness and the small town feel of middlebury, the

Safety Week and Bully Preventionmiddlebury community Schools will be celebrating Safety week from August 31 through September 4. The emphasis throughout all the schools will focus on what to do in emergency situations. drills will be held for students to learn what to do in unexpected situations while also encouraging positive communication with adults in the school. The Olweus Bully Prevention Program will be an integral part of the week with the program's strong message about how positive relationships among students foster an increase in learning and a safer school environment. Look for pictures and articles to come about this important week in a future issue of inMddlebury Magazine!

welcome to middlebury community Schools! we are excited to begin the 2015-16 school year and cannot wait to see our students. we know they have enjoyed exploring, relaxing, and traveling over the summer and are ready to jump right into learning.

Northridge middle School and Northridge High School are excited to begin their first year of Blended Learning classes. These classes will be virtual learning with teacher assistance. Northridge High School is also beginning the implementation of their Early college program that allows students to qualify for an Associate’s degree while gaining high school credits. York Elementary is in its second year of the Expeditionary Learning Program, a STEAm approach to learning, which is supported through the Horizon Education Alliance in Elkhart county.

refinancing some bonds and you may notice the construction on the main campus. A new Bus maintenance Garage will be built just to the west of the Administration center where the buses currently park. we are adding a restroom facility near the varsity soccer fields so that we will be able to eliminate the portable restroom facilities and we are putting new roofs on Heritage Intermediate School and Orchard View Elementary School. York Elementary is in the midst of a safety entrance transformation that should be completed when school starts. Our buildings will sparkle and shine after all of the work that our custodians and maintenance personnel have done over the summer.

New Entrance at York

If you’ve driven by York this summer, you couldn’t have missed that something big is going on. There are trucks and a dumpster, and that means construction. York is relocating the reception and office area within the building to provide greater security for students. A classroom has been gutted on the south side of the building to create spaces for the offices and clinic. Security will be enhanced by having all visitors enter directly through the office before being allowed into the rest of the building.

Architects Barton-coe-Vilamaa and contractor dJ construction are working closely with the school to develop an environment that is warm and inviting while providing maximum utility and security for students, families, and staff. work is moving right along and is scheduled to be completed before school starts in the fall.

Be ready to use the new entrance when you come to the school. The buses will still drop students off where they do now, but all visitors will need to enter through the new entrance on the south side of the building before, during, and after school. Signs will be placed out front to remind visitors of the change. A long range plan is to also put some parking outside the new south entrance when funding permits.

When you consider all the work a shoulder is expected to do, it’s not surprising that it’s prone to problems. It’s a complex joint, and
