STUDENT MEDICAL FORMS During Terms 3 and 4 we will be updating our medical records systems to ensure we have the most up-to-date information on your child’s health. If you have a child with a medical condition you will receive a copy of the new forms in the mail and will need to fill them out and return them to us as soon as you can. The good news is we have already started collecting some of this information, which means less for you to do. The new forms will help us collect your child’s important medical information and the introduction of new systems will mean we'll be able to better manage the daily and emergency health needs of your child. We appreciate your support as we start collecting the information, and if you have any questions please call. UNIFORM SHOP Due to a shortage of available volunteers this week, the Uniform Shop will ONLY fill orders left in the office. The shop in the canteen will NOT open. Please complete a form and leave it before school with the office staff. Please also make sure you leave correct money. Orders will be given to your child prior to the bell on Thursday. Canteen Sub-Committee TRIVIA NIGHT What another fabulous event organised by a wonderful committee. Our Trivia Night, held last Friday at Paddington RSL, saw everyone having a great time as they tackled some easy and some obscure questions. The amount raised hasn’t yet been confirmed but we will let you know in a future newsletter. The event was designed to raise funds for the school, but as with the Performance Night in 2011 and the Market Carnival in 2012, the more important result was the building of bonds in our community. It was great to see a couple of tables of our new Kinder parents as well as lots of our long-standing families. Many thanks to Ross Lamb for providing the venue. An energetic organising group was led by Alessia Jolesz. Other helpers included Karen Lichtner, Rebekah Lucas and Andigone Aguilar. There are still a few “Silent Auction” pieces available. Please contact Karen on 0418 266 586 if interested.

emailed to them and I would like to encourage more

families to take advantage of this. You may opt to

receive a paper copy as well. The email newsletters

occasionally are a little “brighter” than the paper

copies. For example, today’s emailed newsletter has

photos of Tree Day and the Canberra excursion.

OVERNIGHT CANBERRA EXCURSION

We met at school at 7am!!! Our first destination was the

Australian Institute of Sport. Here we saw the training

facilities and it was lots of fun doing the sporting simulators.

After this we went to Questacon!! In Questacon we did the

gravity drop and visited the earthquake room and the

lightning show! This was many peoples favourite destination.

After the epic tour of Questacon we had a tour of all the

embassies in Canberra. At 6 pm we went to our cabins and

prepared for dinner. When dinner was finished we went to

the Dinosaur museum and marvelled at the exhibits. At

around 10 pm we got back to our cabins and had supper and

showers and then tried to sleep. At around 5am we woke up

and had breakfast and prepared lunch for the day ahead.

We started the morning by visiting the Electoral Education

Centre. Here we learned about the importance of voting and

were able to look up our parents on the electoral roll. Then

we had a tour of both the Senate and the House of

Representatives in Parliament House. We even had a

pretend turn of passing a bill. Next we visited The War

Memorial and this was a favourite place for many students.

After seeing many medals and army vehicles from war, we

went on a hands on exhibit where we went into a helicopter

and saw what our feet would look like if they had trench foot.

DISGUSTING!

We then had to get on to the bus for the ride back to Sydney.

We drove for hours, but were lucky to stop at McDonalds on

the way home.

We would all like to give a big thank you to Miss Hoskins,

Miss Smart and Mr Prior for being our chaperones for the

trip.

AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE FOR

NATIONAL CAPITAL EXCURSION

Last week, students from our school undertook an

educational tour of the national capital. While on this tour

they participated in a variety of educational programmes

which focused on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and

democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all

young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as

part of their civics and citizenship education. To assist

parents in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian

Government is contributing funding of $20 per eligible

student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate

(PACER) programme toward the travel expenses incurred.

This contribution will be paid directly to the school upon

completion of the excursion.

We would like to thank the Australian Government for their

support of this program.

LIBRARY NEWS FOR TERM 3

BOOK WEEK THEME - Read Across The UniversE

Once again we are getting ready for our busy time in the school library. Term 3 will be a wonderful time

for the students, staff and parents in our library.

WEEK 5 TERM 3

BOOKFAIR

The Ashton Scholastic Bookfair will be at our school from Monday, 12th August, 2013 until Friday, 16th August, 2013. The

students will be looking at the books on Monday and Tuesday during class library time and they will be writing their ‘Wish

List’ to bring home to you. The students are then able to purchase any books for themselves or to donate to the school (see

the teacher’s wish list pinned up at the entrance to the library). Please be assured that I do tell the children that just

because they write a wish list it does not mean they are automatically able to buy books. They need to discuss this with their

parents and if they don’t get to buy this time then they may be able to purchase from the Bookfair next year.

Grandparent purchasing – Wednesday, 14th August at 1:00pm

Please note this is for grandparents and their grandchildren only!!!

Other purchasing times – Wednesday, 14th

August 3:30-4:00pm

Thursday, 15th August 1:10pm-1:40pm

GRANDPARENT DAY

We would like to invite Pagewood Public School grandparents to participate in a ‘Reading Session’ in the classrooms from

12:30 – 1:00pm on Wednesday, 14th August, 2013. You will observe students engaged in a quality literature session with the

teachers. If you have grandchildren in different classrooms we will put them into 1 room so you can be with all of them

together for the reading session. Following this you are invited to stay for 1st half lunch from 1:00pm – 1:30pm with your

grandchildren (bring your own snack). You may also visit and purchase from the Bookfair in the library which will be open for

grandparents and their grandchildren during 1st half lunch. A note will go home shortly asking for an indication of who is

attending.

WEEK 6 TERM 3 BOOKWEEK

Book Week will run from Monday, 19th August, 2013-Sunday, 25th August, 2013.

During this week the students will be told which of the ‘Shortlisted’ books were chosen as the winners of the ‘Children’s

Book Council Awards’. Throughout Term 2 and Term 3 I have been reading a number of the nominated books to all of the

classes as part of their library lessons. The children have their own ideas on which books will be the winners!

TUESDAY

On Tuesday, 20th

August , 2013, a Musical Theatre Performance Group from Melbourne will be performing “Space Jump” in

our school hall at 9:20am. This show is related to a number of the books that are from the Children’s Book Council Shortlist.

The past years performances were a huge hit and the children talked about them for weeks. Of course we had to get them

back again! A permission note will go home shortly.

Thanking You

Mrs Kerves

(Librarian)

P.S If there are any parents able to help out at the Bookfair with sales please see me.
