Looking back over all the Christmases of my childhood, I realize that it wasn’t the dolls or the clothes or the record albums (much as I love music) or any of the other presents that I was waiting and hoping for during those four long, expectant weeks. I don’t remember the gifts so much as the waiting – pouring over the Sears catalog, singing Christmas songs in choir rehearsals beginning in October, anticipating performances on that stage in the middle of Lenox Mall (where the Starbucks is now), decorating the tree with ornaments of my creation, setting up my father’s electric train with fascination that it still worked as well as it did in his own childhood, going to a late night Christmas Eve service, then hurrying home to snuggle under an electric blanket. The waiting is the best part! December encompasses a season of waiting for all children of God. That’s what Advent is – waiting for the Christ child to be born anew in our hearts, waiting for God to create “a new heaven and a new earth,” waiting for Christ to come again and for the reign of God to come in all its fullness to this broken world. The problem is that “when we passively wait, we are living in fear.” (from Fearless Living, by Rhonda Britten) When we wait for circumstances outside ourselves to change, we miss the chance to experience hope, peace, joy, and love right now. Little six-year-old Ruby was one of the first African-American children to integrate the New Orleans public schools. Every morning and afternoon for weeks on end, the federal marshals would escort her through lines of angry parents hurling insults, racial slurs, and violent words. Harvard child psychologist, Robert Coles, went to New Orleans to study the situation. One day, he saw a woman spit at Ruby, who smiled in return. A man shook his fist at her. Ruby smiled. At the top of the steps, she turned around to the jeering crowd and smiled one more time. Later she told the psychologist that she prayed for the people in that mob every night before going to sleep. Astounded, he asked her why, and Ruby said, “I go to church every Sunday, and we’re told to pray for people, even bad people. Mama says it’s true. My minister says the same thing. ‘We don’t have to worry,’ he says, ‘God is watching over us.’ My minister says if I forgive the people and smile at them and pray for them, God will keep a good eye on everything and he’ll protect us.” The psychologist asked if Ruby believed that was true. She explained, “Oh, yes, I’m sure God knows what is happening. God’s got a lot to worry about, but there’s bad trouble here. God can’t help but notice. He may not do anything right now, but there will come a day, like they say in church, there will come a day. You can count on it. That’s what they say in church.” Advent worship this season invites us to listen to the angels who brought messages to those who were called to advance hope, peace, joy, and love before Jesus’ birth, even in the waiting for his arrival. In the Bible, whenever a messenger from God appears to someone, their first words are always, “Do not be afraid.” There are angels among us now, just like the angelic messengers and little Ruby, encouraging us toward that “great day coming by and by.” Their “fear not” greetings assuage our sense of panic and encourage us to move past our fear – past our comfort zone – to “be the change” we anticipate, even as we wait expectantly for its fulfillment. How we wait as children of God is our best witness for the world. In this meantime, let us wait well, and bring more hope, more peace, more joy, more love while we do.

Series

“Don’t be afraid.” - The Angels

The angels that appear in the story of Jesus’ birth would have been very comfortable in our world of tweets and hashtags. Their messages were often short and to the point – their favorite line being #DoNotBeAfraid.

As we look at the stories of these winged messengers to Zechariah, Mary, Joseph and the Shepherds and their reactions to them, we will contemplate what messages we can offer that will conteract a culture of fear and bring #morehope, #morepeace, #morejoy, #morelove, and #morelife to the world.

12/03/17– Make Ready a People: #morehope Luke 1:5–25, 57–80

12/10/17– Nothing is Impossible: #morepeace Luke 1:26–56

12/17/17– Do Not Be Afraid: #morejoy Matthew 1:18–25

12/24/17– This Will Be a Sign: #morelove Luke 2:1–20

12/31/17– Get Up and Go: #morelife Matthew 2:1–23

Christmas Gifts for StaffANotefromSPRC:Lewis Brothers and Sisters: As you prepare this Christmas to celebrate the birth of our greatest servant, I humbly ask you to consider making a love offering to our church staff as a heart-felt “Thank you” for their service this year. I offer that what we see of their ministry is like an iceberg; our eyes only recognize 10 percent of their work! While we are assured that the phone will be answered, the building and facilities will be clean, worship services will be planned and conducted joyfully, as well as other key functions, we may take for granted or overlook their– • Countless hours of work • Unquestioned character and integrity • Demonstration of grace, love and patience with us - especially on worst days • Helping us live our spiritual lives with meaning and purpose Our staff give their lives every day to serve not only us but also their family and the world. Hence, please prayerfully consider a personal offering which says, “Thank you” - it can be given through December 17, please annotate as “Staff Love Offering.”

However you choose to express your love, please pray daily with gratitude for the servanthood and the friendship of our staff. Agape, Craig Doxey: Staff-Parish Relations Committee Chair, 706.755.2325 | [email protected]

252 Basics Sundays | 5:00 pm | Chapel

252 Basics is a curriculum designed for Pre-Kindergarten through 5th Grade. “What does 252 mean?” Its not our street address, nor the number of questions a 2nd grader can ask in 20 minutes. Instead, everything we teach in 252 Basics is based on one of three basic, but powerful truths modeled by Jesus in Luke 2:52 (hence 252)

• I need to make the wise choice. • I can trust God no matter what.

• I should treat others the way I want to be treated. The curriculum is designed to provoke discovery and invite kids into a new understanding of how to grow in relationship with Jesus Christ. 252 Basics will not meet on December 10 to allow children to participate in the Children’s Church Christmas Program. There will be NO 252 Basics on Christmas Eve , December 24, or New Year’s Eve, December 31.

The current theme: “Gratitude” Letting others know you see how they have helped you. The current memory verse: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV

Ministry Highlights

Testimony from someone who needed RUSH HOUR PRAYER: “Been feeling incredibly overwhelmed lately. I’ve been praying the last couple of days that I would run into the right group of people that could pray for me. People that don’t know me and don’t know my struggles. Today I was driving home and saw people holding signs in front of their church saying “Have A Bad Day?” “Let Us Pray With You!” I felt the overwhelming sense to pull over. I opened my car door and fell into a stranger’s arms and cried as she prayed for me. I felt a weight lifting from me and a peace come over my chest. I’ve been so distant from God, though I still listen to him when he commands me to do for others. I’ve been depressed and withdrawn and I’ve been really good at hiding it from most. For the first time in almost two weeks, my migraine has eased up. I have not had one ounce of pain on the muscles in my neck or head that I’ve been fighting and the pain is finally bearable enough that I can laugh and play with (my son) tonight without wincing. I pulled over and let a stranger pray for me and showed God I needed his comfort today. And here he is comforting me in more than one way. I know it’s going to take time, but I’m happy for a moment of peace in my mind and body. And I’m happy he was waiting for me to run to him. I’m thankful for the woman who prayed for me today because she just doesn’t know how much it meant to me.”

Recycle Lewis Lewis Memorial has formed an Earth Advocacy Team that is actively taking steps to help conserve and recycle through many avenues around the church’s property. If you are working or helping in the kitchen, please refer to the recycle list on the refrigerator before disposing of any food packaging. Aluminum cans/pans can either be washed and reused, or rinsed and recycled. There are recycle bins throughout the church, with a list of accepted items at each location. Paper can be recycled - put it in a recycle bin instead of the trash can. We are using real dishes for our church meals, to help reduce the amount of trash that is filling our landfills. Reliable helpers are needed who are willing to wash dishes after church meals. Recycle bins may be found in the Fellowship Hall, the Sunday School Hall, the Choir Hall, the Work Room, the Warehouse, the Youth Building, and the Children’s Church Building. Please help us be good stewards of this earth and its resources. Our “earth girl” is Catherine Beall. You may contact her if you would like to become involved in this new area of ministry at Lewis, through washing dishes after a meal, collecting recycle bins, or other recycling options available. Her email address is (appropriately): [email protected]
